24.01.2022 Today I've talked about bowel habits more often than most people do in a year! So....what type are you? 23.01.2022 Becoming a mum unleashes emotions of extraordinary joy and love. It simultaneously comes with grief as you temporarily have to say goodbye to some parts of you that used to give you identity and purpose. Today marks the beginning of perinatal mental health awareness week. Parenthood is hard. Mental health is hard. Both require nurturing and it’s ok to sometimes get it wrong. Be kind to yourself and always, always be kind to parents. You don’t know how much sleep they had last night. #womankindphysio #womenshealth #PND
23.01.2022 Vulval validation... Talking about the ins and outs of our vulvas seems to be considered rather taboo and as a result many are left wondering what is normal? The Labia Library (http://www.labialibrary.org.au/) is a wonderful resource that demonstrates the diversity of vulvas all of which are wonderfully unique and normal!

21.01.2022 Balance - A COVID-19 Journey. The first lockdown this year, back in March, for me, actually brought a sense of relief, of freedom, of time. I quite enjoyed the uninterrupted weeks to spend quality time with my small family, to get things done and to breath a sigh of relief from the relentless schedule wed found ourselves trapped in. Additionally, my husband was working from home full time. For me, that meant not being a solo parent from 7AM - 7PM every day. If a patient ran ...late, or if there was an emergency mastitis client to squeeze in, I wasnt doing acrobatics to make it happen. If I was home 30mins late, it was no biggie. I wasnt making lunches or screaming down the hall 5 MINUTE WARNING every morning. It didnt really matter if the laundry wasnt done, sometimes, I wasnt even having to cook dinner because hubby was enjoying some freedom himself to create in the kitchen. For the first few weeks, we didnt really miss anyone, we were enjoying our company, playing lots of card games and generally having some down time from our usually frenetic work, social and extracurricular activities. Now I sit here on a rainy Saturday in the middle of September and I feel quite different. Writing the above, I can still see the appeal in this unusual forced rest, but now instead of feeling cocooned, I feel trapped. Ive noticed despite doing less, Im more tired. Despite having more time to explore hobbies, our range of weekly activities has whittled down to a predictable few. My patience with the kids is fraying. Im stressed about us all putting on weight. Gains and skills that the kids were making in sports are being forgotten or lost. Were becoming less and less creative as our world and exposure to experiences shrinks and shrinks. So Ive learnt a few things this year. About myself, about my family and about balance. It turns out, I can feel trapped in two very different ways. Trapped by commitments to be everywhere and do everything, and trapped being unable to go anywhere or do anything. Like all things, everything is good in moderation. Too much of anything can be a bad thing. Too much work, too little work, too much family, too little family, too much to do, too little to do, too much stress, too little to stress about. Balance. The isolation and rest that COVID has forced on us, has had some silver linings. There are some pearls I will strive to keep and remember to implement in the coming years as life goes back to its normal pace. But as humans, we are programmed to explore new territories, to navigate challenges, to connect and communicate with a wide range of people. Im looking forward to travelling far and wide again, meeting people and connecting, smiling, laughing. But I will look back on 2020 with mixed feelings, remembering some of the important things I learnt about balance. Kym xx

12.01.2022 Our Director Kym Veale, was asked to contribute an article for the Banyule Community Newsletter. Many people do not realise we see women, men and children for bladder dysfunction. This could be urinary urgency, frequency, incontinence and enuresis or bedwetting. All our physiotherapists have completed post graduate training on bladder and bowel management and work with GPs, urologists and paediatricians to manage what can be a really distressing problem. Continence and pelv...ic floor physio is first line management for these conditions, you do not need a referral to book an appointment with us. 12.01.2022 Why do you exercise? Many of you will know the physical benefits of exercise, but now more than ever, I feel its the mental and emotional benefits that are driving me to get into my active wear and move. Exercise is a beautiful way of shifting some of that negative energy, that can otherwise become stagnant, and aid in boosting our spirits to help get through these long, tedious days of isolation.... Be kind to yourself move as gently or as vigorously as you feel you need to, but give your body and your mind that release it is so desperately craving. - Shea x

11.01.2022 Womens Health Week! Womens health needs to be front and centre it often isnt, but it needs to be. Cynthia Nixon As women our health often falls low on our list of priorities. We care for our children, our home even our pets often before we take time to care for ourselves.... Womens Health Week encourages women to at long last prioritise and address their own physical and/or mental health concerns. Take the first step book and appointment with a health professional, schedule a phone catch up with a friend, take a stroll along the walking track on a nice sunny arvo do something for you! #WomensHealthWeek

06.01.2022 How well do you know your breasts? I remember breastfeeding my new born son in the cold of the night in merely my bra and undies thinking why is it so hot in here? Id been feeling pretty depleted the past day or so but naturally put this down to being a new mum, recovering from child birth and surviving off very little and broken sleep. As the hours progressed, I began to feel more and more unwell. My breasts were so incredibly tender but when my search for a golf ball s...ized lump in my breast discovered nothing, I thought it couldnt be mastitis I was wrong! In fact, there were areas of my breast that rather than being soft and squishy under my fingertips were firm, as if pressing on my forehead and it wasnt until I sought treatment that I learnt this in fact was not the norm and a clear sign that an underlying blocked duct or inflammation was at play. Following this, I made a point to regularly check in with my breasts so as to identify any changes early and seek treatment as soon as possible. A quick assessment in the shower every day or so was all it took to become familiar with my usual breast tissue and pick up on any irregularities. Those of you who have had mastitis know that it can be incredibly debilitating and often its not the tender, swollen breasts that cause you the most grief its the aches and pains, the fever, the exhaustion! Seeking treatment early can help prevent the onset or worsening of these symptoms and allow you to get back on your feet earlier. Take care and take time to get to know your breasts! - Shea x See more

06.01.2022 We’ve been working out of our Rivers of Yarrambat location all through 2020 as a permitted allied health service. For several months, with the cafe and garden centre closed and many other services that run out of the health centre not able to open, its been very quiet. Today though, the cafe was open! The garden centre and gift shop buzzing! All the practitioners are back, and everyone is busy! It’s been exciting to see, and I’m so relieved! It’s a beautiful place, a nice drive and there are lots of fantastic people offering great services. Visit us out here and stay for a coffee #womankindphysio #womenshealthphysio #pelvicfloorphysio #riversofyarrambat #covidnormal

05.01.2022 Winter I once heard the four weeks of our cycle described as the four seasons of the year. 02.01.2022 Have trouble remembering to do your daily pelvic floor exercises? Try piggybacking them onto an activity you do every day such as; - In the shower - Having your morning cuppa... - Whilst baby is having their tummy time - Watching your favourite reality tv show of an evening Make a conscious effort to pair the two activities together over the next week and soon enough it will become second nature and one less thing to try and remember!
02.01.2022 UPDATE: STAGE 4 RESTRICTIONS To our lovely community: Under Stage 4 Restrictions, from tomorrow, to attend an appointment in person, you must have a referral from a GP or a medical specialist. There is no change or restrictions on accessing telehealth services with your physio. ... Our professional association is advocating to remove this restriction to access a physio appointment, to prevent overwhelming GP clinics when they are already under pressure. However, we also understand the intent of the DHHS is to minimise unnecessary movement across the state, even for health appointments. So we are on board! If you are attending an appointment in person from tomorrow, we recommend printing your referral or having a digital copy readily available on your phone while you drive to your appointment. If you need a copy of your referral, you can contact us via email to send it to you. Additionally, as proof of your appointment with us, you can use your text reminder or email confirmation. If you havent been referred to our service by a GP or other specialist, but need to continue to attend in person over the next 6 weeks, we encourage you to ask your GP or specialist (ie. obstetrician, gynaecologist, paediatrician) to provide a written referral for you. Your physiotherapist may be able to provide you with a letter to give your GP, outlining the specific reasons you need to continue to attend in person. We are grateful that we can continue to operate and provide essential, timely healthcare to the women in our community. We are committed to doing the right thing to slow the spread of COVID. We will get through this together. -The Womankind Team xxx
01.01.2022 And in the ever changing landscape that is COVID restrictions....at midnight last the department of health and human services reversed their decision about the need for a medical referral to see a physio. YOU DO NOT NEED A GP REFERRAL TO ATTEND A PHYSIOTHERAPY APPOINTMENT FOR THE NEXT 6 WEEKS. This is good news!
