24.01.2022 Dads arent just snack b****es. I just saw a post about what a dads role in breastfeeding is. It showed the dad as a butler brining water, phone, and the ...remote to the nursing mom. While I get the joke, I dont think this perpetuates a healthy view of what a dads role truly is. Many moms and dads choose to not breastfeed BECAUSE they think this is how it is and dads desperately want to be involved! Theyre so much more than a snack/ water delivery service. Theyre support, they hug you when youre up crying trying to get the baby to latch. Theyre helping you remember what the LC taught you during the 5th feed of the night when youre so tired you can barely stay awake. They help you gently push your babys chin down so you can get a good latch because you just dont have enough hands! They tell you youre doing a good job when you feel like youre about to give up. Dads can make and break breastfeeding relationships. Their role should not be discounted. Credit for this gorgeous photo goes to Reds Photography Thank you to Chelsey Rivera for letting us share your beautiful moment.

23.01.2022 The poster below is a perfect example of anti-breastfeeding "information". This notion that you cant eat certain foods when breastfeeding is not based in scien...ce. Lets look at some of the information. First of all lets look at foods that "okay" for breastfeeding mothers. Nothing really wrong with what they say except that you dont have to take in calcium to make milk with calcium. But the real problem is that this is a diet for people who are relatively affluent. Many mothers could not afford to eat such a diet and thus be frightened into formula feeding, which, I should emphasize is actually more expensive that the foods mentioned here. This is a stratagem used by formula companies. A prime example a few years ago was a campaign by one formula company in Brazil, supported by the Brazilian pediatric society, saying that your breastfed baby eats what you eat. Posters were widely distributed showing a baby suckling at a breast that looks like a doughnut, or looks like a hamburger. What about the panels of foods "to avoid". 1. Sugary foods. The poster says in this section to avoid fatty foods and salty foods as well as sugary foods. We all should try to keep our sugar, salt and fat intake at a reasonable level. But to imply that if you eat a lot of sugar your baby has an increased risk of obesity is just plain wrong. Breastmilk, in fact, does not change much in response to what you eat. It changes from morning to evening, from day to day, from month 1 to month 6, and later, but not because of what you eat. But if you eat a lot of sugar, your milk will have the same amount of sugar as if you ate no sugar at all. 2. "You might find that just a dash of pepper is enough to make your baby irritated and fussy for hours". This is pure fantasy. There is no evidence for this being true. And it is unlikely that anything in pepper or other spices would get into the milk in quantities that would bother the baby. 3. Citrus fruits? "Certain compounds" are supposed to the irritating to the babys gut. Oh, please! If these "certain compounds got into the milk would they not be irritating to the breast or nipple? 4. Caffeine? Babies do not excrete caffeine as rapidly as adults true, but so little gets into the milk that a cup or two of coffee will not bother the baby. Caffeine is given to premature babies as a treatment and nobody worries about how they might excrete caffeine. Its not right to deprive breastfeeding mothers from drinking coffee and tea in reasonable amounts. This poster eliminates much of what mothers like to eat. 5. Processed foods? Not a great choice for anyone, this is not specific to breastfeeding mothers. But just as above, the preservatives will not get into the milk in any significant quantities. 6. Garlic? Are they insane? Garlic does not bother babies. This is prejudice against people who eat garlic. Most of the world loves garlic and eat it when the baby breastfeeds without harm to anyone. 7. No peppermint, fennel, parsley, or chamomile? There is no evidence for this to show that the way people typically eat these can reach therapeutic levels. 8. Alcohol, no level of alcohol in the milk is safe for the breastfed baby? Except that almost no alcohol gets into the milk. See this article http://ibconline.ca/maternal-medications/. Alcohol is discussed near the end of the article, but its worth reading the whole thing. This poster is an appalling attempt to frighten women out of breastfeeding and enjoying what they like to eat. These restrictions on what breastfeeding mothers can eat have been debunked decades ago. Lets encourage good nutrition for everyone, and lets stop haranguing breastfeeding mothers into stopping breastfeeding by worrying them about their diets. You can find a more about how to prevent problems with breastfeeding, including preventing fussiness, "colic", "reflux" "allergy to something in the mothers milk" and much more in my ebook called Breastfeeding: Empowering Parents: www.ibconline.ca/ebook

21.01.2022 Preparing for birth- I usually encourage women to have a top ready that is long & covers your deriere when you lean over. Privacy & not feeling like you are on show is important in the early stages of labour when oxytocin is being shy. Something with short or no sleeves (you are working hard and get hot!). Once youre in active labour youll quite possibly be flinging it off.

20.01.2022 Research shows just 30 minutes of skin to skin with dad on the first day of a newborn actually rewires dads brain. Stimulating many hormones especially Dopmin...e and Oxytocin so dads get connected to their babies and want to nurture them. YES. Dads, get those cuddles in! 12.01.2022 THAT FIRST YEAR The year that two became three No. More. Hot. Tea.... The year of not leaving your side For more than an hour And feeling revived From a two minute shower The year of white noise Cuddles and baby slings As you slowly adjust To the outside things The year of sleep regressions Monkey impressions Panicked Google searches Too many to mention The year I realised that women Really do hold all the powers Rocking and pacing For hours and hours Being more selective of The company I keep And dreading that question So how does he sleep? The year of building All the rods for my own back Binning the baby books And not looking back Endless walks with the pram To help you to nap Pounding the pavements Looking like crap One whole year to realise That theres no wrong or right Theres what works What you need In the middle of the night The year of doubts and fears And bending the ears Of family and friends Hell sleep eventually But when? But youre more than Your sleep struggles So much more Youre that look of wonder At a knock on the door Your giggles Your protests And that tiny roar Beaming with pride As you take in your stride Learning to roll, crawl and stand And wave your wee hand A sudden respect for those Whove done all this before But with two, with three, with four Or more The year of grand plans and dreams Of these homemade cuisines But some days just called For eggs, chips and beans And yet somehow you thrived And we just about survived The hourly wake-ups, And some almost-breakups You really did shake-up These two kids --------------------------------------------------------------- Words: Karen McMillan (Mother Truths) Image: Vskafandre MOTHER TRUTHS The Poetry Book is available to buy now: https://linktr.ee/mother_truths

02.01.2022 Some great tips here about talking to your children about the female body, its cycles and seasons. This is relevant to all of us as Tami says "Because we all came in through a female body. It was our beginning place, our first home. So how we shame, or honour, that home has relevance for all of us."

02.01.2022 Oh Hi Today was a pretty cheery day after a couple of weird ones... heres why.) So my birth photographer tells me the other day that she has photographed ove...r 100 births in the past 18 months and 1 (yep 1) of all of those women had a spontaneous labour. The other 99 had been induced. I was the 1. And I was offered an induction 3 times. He was 12 days past his due date and he arrived when he decided to. I said No Thanks to three inductions. I was booked for rupture of membranes at 42 weeks. How did I manage to avoid it? I had help. I had an independent midwife that was my trusted source of accurate evidence based information. I wobbled... I was nearly convinced to have a growth scan but my plan was going to remain the same even if a growth scan showed he was big. We knew he was big. He was big. He was 11lbs. Was it easy.. no but no birth is easy. I worked harder in the weeks before doing inversions and balance exercises from Spinning Babies and saw a Webster chiropractor that helped me with positioning. Anyway..I worked harder not to get swallowed up by the system. Very hard. Now Im not saying at all inductions are unnecessary but I am saying that its unlikely that 99/100 women needed assistance to start labour. So heres my advice. Do YOUR research. You dont need to say No either. You can say I want more information/ explain to me the risks of induction/I need more time and what would happen if we did nothing I can say this about my birth and I implore you to create this for yourself too.
