17.01.2022 Being yourself often involves acts of vulnerability in the workplace, which poses a risk for individuals if the environment isn't psychologically safe. In this context, acts of vulnerability include simple things like asking questions or speaking up in a meeting to share new ideas, or even challenging the status-quo - gasp! We've all been in workplaces where that's career suicide! Timothy R Clark, Oxford trained social scientist and author of The 4 Stages of Psychological ...Safety tells us that if it's expensive to be yourself at work it's a sure sign you don't have a psychologically safe environment. In a psychologically safe environment these activities are business as usual. All people feel included and safe to ask questions and learn, and eventually safe to contribute and challenge. In fact, these aspects are essential for collaboration, innovation and ultimately high performance. But if you don't have a safe environment, acts of vulnerability can be costly, and met with adverse actions such as exclusion, reduced opportunities for training or progression, or even disciplinary measures. The end result is that employees live with the fear of repercussions and therefore remain silent, stifling innovation and impacting on mental health & wellbeing, productivity and workplace culture. Think about your workplace. Are staff meetings deadly silent? Did the last person to speak up get knocked off the pedestal? These are some sure signs your workplace needs a psychological safely uplift. Get in touch to find out how. 07.01.2022 One of the first things we do when designing a change project is to create a compelling case for "why". In that vein, I thought I'd share my "why" in regard to creating the Cracking the Change Code program. I've led and been part of considerable change over my entire career. I understand the burden as a Leader to deliver major changes with little resourcing, and I've seen the impact on the people when change is handled in a process only manner with little consideration for ...the need to engage and transition them. I've worked in - and consulted for - organisations with toxic cultures that could largely be attributed to a poor history of change; and as a Mentally Healthy Workplaces specialist, I've seen the empirical evidence that poorly managed change in the workplace contributes to psychological harm. The reality is that most Leaders are well intentioned, time poor, jugglers of competing priorities and daily crisis - and not change practitioners. Bridging that gap is my "why". This program supports Leaders to achieve on their change objectives, and transition their people in a way that optimises psychological wellbeing not detracts from it, whilst building lasting workplace change efficacy and change leadership confidence.
