25.01.2022 I've been promising our spades, shovels and rakes a Spa Day. Including a lovely massage with linseed oil and turps. Yummmmm. They are so exhausted they refuse to get up now.

23.01.2022 Meanwhile work continues...

21.01.2022 A Room with a View (and an office with a view) Right outside my office window we have a superb old (well, 40 years old) Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) that was amongst the first trees we planted at Wombat Bend. Over the years it has provided shelter, shade, food, habitat and of course, beauty. It has a wonderfully rugged and ridged and barky stocking up to about 5 metres, then it branches widely with smooth grey-cream bark all the way to the top.... Two years ago, a pair of Dusky Wood-swallows built their home in the bark of the trunk about 5 feet up .. too close to Swamphen depradation so we had to resort to a light wire 'cage' to protect the family. They coped really well and raised their three beautiful children. Last year they faffed around thinking about it, but didn't build again. No surprise there. So to my astonishment, about five weeks ago, back they came, fiddling around with bits of twig and grass retrieved from the old house, poking here and there to claim the best bit of real estate and set up home. But over these five weeks, nothing serious has actually happened .. maybe they struck local government regulations that insisted on a certain height above ground, or specific measurements for the awnings, or particular materials for the walls ... who knows. Last week, more regular visits .. the FIFO sort. (No quarantine required though :D ). Yesterday, more and more activity, including a wad of Angus-wool peeping out of the nest. Very nice too. But I remained unconvinced .... until .... this morning, there she is, sitting sweetly on eggs (I assume) and looking so proud of herself. Quite smug you might say. It's an absolutely prime bit of real estate, with magnificent water views, completely weather-proof, out of the wind and rain, and definitely Swamphen-proof. So it's now Day One for the eggs, and I'll be watching and counting the days till Hatching. I'm guessing around 15. 17.01.2022 Angus won himself another heart last week. Our delightful writer in residence charmed him utterly and he took every opportunity on her breaks to look after her.

The approach to Wombat Bend is so special - as is our tiny eggplant we spotted growing in the vegie garden - so we thought we’d share both with you today. Incase you needed a small eggplant to cheer you. #vineyards #yarravalley #wineyarravalley #eggplant #weekendsaway #taketimeout #holiday #staycation #yarravalley #visitvictoria #yourhappyspace #melbourne #findyouself #bnb #selfcontained #writersretreat #billabong #birdsong #nature #vacation #ruralholiday #visitmelbourne #theburrow #theburrowatwombatbend #wombatbend #nativegarden #nativeplants #bliss #visityarravalley #seeaustralia

11.01.2022 We are SO ready for post-lockdown ....

09.01.2022 Grab your binoculars and get ready because the Annual Backyard Bird count starts on Monday 19 October! Each year, BirdLife Australia holds the #AussieBirdCount, which asks Australians to get out into their backyards or local nature spots and record the birdlife they observe. This is a fun activity that everyone can take part in. Birdwatching is also a great way to unwind and learn more about the native birds in your local area. Last year, more than 88,000 Australians took p...art in the bird count, recording close to 3.4 million birds. This year is more important than ever, with the 2019-20 bushfires having had a devastating impact on Australia’s native wildlife, including our birdlife. The data received this year will be compared to previous years to help track the long-term impacts of the 2019-20 bushfires on birdlife. To register and find out more, visit https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/ or click the event below #nationalbirdweek #australianbirds #birdlife #birdsong #birdwatching #billabong #nativegardens #habitat #natureretreat #Yarravalley

05.01.2022 We're on tonight !!!! 7.30pm Gardening Australia, ABC Friday ...that's tonight ;) https://mailchi.mp//tmrw-night-wombat-bend-on-gardening-au

04.01.2022 I've been trying to find 20 minutes in which to make my bird count for the Bird Week surveys being conducted by Birdlife Australia. Finally yesterday I found those minutes ... and wow, was I surprised. I just sat on our table-seat that overlooks the billabong and most of Wombat Bend and recorded on the app ... wait for it ... 27 species sighted, and a total of 296 actual birds. Keep in mind that the Red Wattlebird invasion of our incredibly flowering Eucalyptus sideroxylo...n rosea is pretty much uncountable (they wont stay still !) so I took a punt and recorded 50 but it'd be more like 100 ... but everything else is true blue. Forty years ago Wombat Bend was a flat paddock with an occasional Magpie visitor. Now it's Bird Central. At least for Dixons Creek, and quite possibly the Yarra Valley. Just goes to show ...if you build it, they will come. Truly Paddock to Sanctuary. https://aussiebirdcount.org.au/

02.01.2022 Here you go - for anyone who missed us on Friday night's Ep of Gardening Australia. Jane Edmanson and the Gardening Australia crew filmed a segment at Wombat Bend in November 2019 where our Callistemons, which we have cultivated over the past 15 years, were at their absolute best. November is ‘bottlebrush’ time at Wombat Bend. As the presenters stroll around the billabong and around the smaller frog pond at the eastern end of the property, you see masses of Callistemons in fu...ll flower, dripping with honeyeaters. Callistemons provide a fabulous array of style and colour together with extreme resilience in all habitat. One of our most widely used varieties is Callistemon Mary MacKillop, which you see in plantation form here, used as both screening and for bird habitat, in full flower. A large number of other cultivars are also growing around the billabong and frog pond, Candelabra, Four Seasons, Edna Walling Scarlet Willow, Genoa Glory, Betka Beauty, Silver Cloud and Sue's own Callistemon named for her. The segment aired on Friday 9 October on Gardening Australia on ABC. #gardeningaustralia #gardens #nativegardens #habitat #callistemon #yarravalley #horticulture #sueforrester #billmolyneux #bottlebrush

01.01.2022 There's something about breakfast that gets the mood happy. That's likely why they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When my brother was about four, he used to toddle off down the garden, cross over the little brook that separated our place from our grandmother's home and equally magic garden, and arrive at her door, to announce ... 'Nenny, I'm come for breksit'.... My blue & white Cornish china all came from her collection. I never remember any other crockery. So that's another reason I love to share it with our B&B guests. They too can enjoy their breksit, on the treasured china that has seen a lot of breksits in its time. When lockdown is behind us, it will be so lovely to welcome our Wombat Bend guests again. We really miss you !! Maybe think about a late Fathers Day visit. I'm sure he'd love breksit in bed at The Burrow #breakfastinbed #comebacksoon #wombatbend #visityarravalley #SweetMemories #fathersday #planahead
