24.01.2022 THEY are a beloved, pudgy little creature unique to our country but their future is increasingly under threat. Though humans are the largest threat to wombat populations around Australia as the marsupials are being killed on roads, due to habitat clearing, illegal hunting and culling on private properties, a devastating health condition is also impacting the species’ future. 18.01.2022 Humans are not the only species fighting a rampant plague; wombats are being decimated by an insidious killer, amid claims of government inaction and cover-up. Wombats across four states and the ACT are falling victim to sarcoptic mange, a deadly condition caused by flesh-eating mites that causes a slow death by starvation or infection. Small groups of volunteers are treating as many of the stoic marsupials as possible, but say they receive no help from government.... https://www.theaustralian.com.au//ff2cb6cfe12eb70130e28d2b

16.01.2022 Great to see one healthy Wombat. Authorities have removed a rogue wombat from a Tasmanian suburb following 12 months of home invasions in which it terrorised residents by entering their houses through cat flaps. Key points:... A marauding wombat known as Mr Bat has been relocated after a year-long campaign of theft and vandalism in Longford A local politician says residents were concerned for Mr Bat's safety, and there is a theory the creature may have been hand-raised Mr Bat is now living at Cradle Mountain, but he has left behind a trail of ruined pillows, empty pet bowls, and defaced paint-jobs The animal also reportedly made a bed out of cushions, feasted on cat food, tunnelled under fences and dug out gardens at homes in Longford, in the state's north. https://www.abc.net.au//rogue-wombat-terrorises-t/11889176

14.01.2022 Is Bravecto an answer for Wombat Mange? - Australian Research Council Linkage Project have funded a team of researchers under the leadership of Dr Scott Carver. The trials will commence in Tasmania and New South Wales will commence in 2020. - Bravecto is relatively new to the market and is longer lasting than Cydectin. Dr Carver says "We have found that Bravecto protects for over three months, and indications are a single treatment as a similarly sized dog will break the mange mite cycle"
13.01.2022 A widespread effort to save wombats with deadly mange disease at a national park in Tasmania’s north has been unsuccessful, according to researchers from the University of Tasmania. In a paper published today in the Journal of Applied Ecology, scientists detail the results of a treatment regime they conducted in Narawntapu National Park, revealing that while the wombat’s condition improved during treatment, all of the animals have since died from the disease. https://www.wombatmange.com.au/wombat-mange-program-failin/
09.01.2022 National Report: Australia’s Response to Sarcoptic Mange in Wombats. Page ii. V2.0 Final 5 October 2018 Found that; Analysis of stakeholder inputs to this report found a number of key needs and concerns:... The need for a coordinated approach to managing mange across all regions The need for credible data about wombat populations and mange prevalence The need for a greater understanding of mange and better treatment options Concern about the efficacy of the current treatment regimen and difficulties executing it Concern about a lack of clear information and a strong sense of I just don’t know what to do. These needs and concerns represent fundamental hurdles to responding to mange effectively, but there is currently no framework to address them. In short, sarcoptic mange appears to fall between the cracks of Australia’s wildlife management system. https://www.wombatmange.com.au/national-report-australias-/

03.01.2022 A sad photo of another mange affected Wombat from Vanessa Fletcher. Thanks for the work that all the volunteers are doing.
01.01.2022 Using 7 years of population surveys and 4 years of disease severity surveys, we show that mange was first detected in the east of a wombat population in northern Tasmania, and progressed westward as a travelling wave. Wombat mortality rates reached 100% behind the wave, with a 94% decline in overall wombat abundance within the park. https://www.wombatmange.com.au/journal-of-applied-ecology-/
