25.01.2022 Who cares for the carers? Help The Carers Foundation Australia, our 2018 grant recipient, spread awareness for their Who Cares campaign. Did you know children as young as 8 are also carers for disabled or sick parents or siblings? They need support and respite so in 2018 Women and Change answered the call with $50,000 for a programme to bring together teen carers to help manage the mental and physical burden on their young shoulders.... Beautiful Ronnie Benbow and the team at the Carers Foundation want to spread awareness about these amazing children and other carers. 2020 has been a hard year for the Carers in our community but you can help Ronni and the team keep up the good work by sharing this message and helping out anyway you can. And special thanks for our 12 year old producer/director and all of our children for holding the iPhones and managing the ‘talent’ of our Committee into this enthusiastic production. #wecareforcarers #icare #carersfoundation #carersfoundationaustralia #womenandchange

02.01.2022 2020 Grant Finalist - SHINE for Kids - Ride By Your Side Children of incarcerated mothers are the invisible victims of crime and can experience lifelong trauma, shame, family violence and emotional distress. They are also at higher risk of homelessness, poverty and poor educational outcomes. SHINE for Kids is the only national charity that works solely to transform the lives of children whose mothers are incarcerated. Ride By Your Side is a SHINE for Kids program that off...ers support to children who have no other way of having contact with their incarcerated mother. Mothers in correctional facilities are far less likely to receive visits from their children compared to incarcerated fathers. The reasons are diverse and depend on a range of factors including the child’s care arrangements, family relationships, physical location and access to transport. Some children enter State care while their mother is incarcerated, and in some cases, mothers are moved between facilities during their sentence which adds to the challenge of maintaining contact. Through a structured, child-safe, 12-month mentoring program paired with transport, Ride by Your Side helps children maintain a relationship with their mothers that would otherwise be impossible. For these children, maintaining regular contact with their mothers is vital to fostering positive relationships and avoiding family fragmentation which can have negative lifelong impacts. This program provides an opportunity for trained mentors to engage with at-risk children in a safe, secure and consistent environment while children are transported to and from correctional facilities. SHINE for Kids currently operate similar successful programs in Victoria, ACT and NSW and in Queensland at the Townsville Correctional Facility. A Women and Change grant would allow the Ride By Your Side program to employ a coordinator for to oversee the program including screening and training of 20 volunteer mentors to support the children of 20 incarcerated mothers in three Southern Queensland prisons. #womenandchange #childrenofprisoners #invisiblevictimsofcrime #notmycrime #ridebyyourside @shineforkids SHINE for Kids
