19.01.2022 We help our mentors to develop a strong rapport with a participant. This opens up role-modelling opportunities that offer women alternate ways to approach, and think about addressing, situations. Want to learn more about how the WAM model supports women? 15.01.2022 The number of volunteer enquiries and applications we have received in the past few months has been nothing short of inspiring. Our most recent cohort of mentors are in the final stages of training and will be ready to match in the coming weeks. We have also embraced remote mentor training and due to its success, we are able to extend the areas for new mentor recruits! This will allow us to support vulnerable women living in rural areas. Know someone who would make a great mentor? Share WAM!
14.01.2022 When one of your volunteers sends gorgeous hand made masks to pass on to women in need. Thanks Helen, they are awesome!
12.01.2022 Check out this group of wonderful women! This is our new cohort of volunteer mentors who are finishing up their training today Under stage 4 restrictions everything has switched to digital - our training, group supervision and even our mentoring is all being conducted by phone, zoom, WhatsApp and other platforms to keep these critical connections going. We hope to match this group to women in their community to provide practical assistance and emotional support as they nav...igate and build a pathway away from the justice system. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer mentor, we will be holding one more information session later this year. Contact: [email protected] to find out more.
11.01.2022 At a time when loneliness and anxiety are heightened, we're delighted to have some wonderful donations to create care packs to send out to our program participants and our volunteer mentors. Keep an eye on your mailbox! Thanks to Good360 Australia and @icycreeksoapco
09.01.2022 Thank you for keeping us connected! The Alfred Felton Bequest and the support we received from our mid-year campaign has helped our mentor matches to stay connected throughout the year. These donations have enabled us to purchase new phones, top up phone data and supply some much needed material aid to women in need. We thank all who donated to ensure our remote mentoring was able to continue and encourage those who have spare phones or laptops to consider donating. ... You can still support our program by visiting https://www.givenow.com.au/WAM

07.01.2022 While we are in lockdown, a simple check-in on friends and family with a phone call or text can make a huge difference to someones day. Our mentors are keeping up these vital connections with criminalised and vulnerable women who are already so isolated. Find out how you can play a critical role in the lives of women in your community by becoming a mentor. http://womenandmentoring.org.au/get-involved/

04.01.2022 Looking for ways to create change in the lives of vulnerable women? Donations and mentor applications are ways you can help - but as a first step, learn about the issues around women and the Justice system. We recommend reading "The Rise and Fall of Patriarchy" by Michelle Panayi.

01.01.2022 Review meetings with WAM mentors & participants offer a chance to hear the positive differences the match has made possible. Here is recent feedback from a WAM participant who has made progress and recognised new strengths thanks to the support of her mentor.
01.01.2022 The last state budget included an investment of more than $1.8bn for expanding prison capacity, and only $44m for rehabilitation and diversion programs. If we know that #jailingisfailing, shouldn't we be looking for ways to keep people out of prison? https://www.justicereforminitiative.org.au/forget_the_emoti
01.01.2022 A WAM match story that captures the positive difference a mentor can make: Claire & Leah* were matched for about 15 months. It was a pretty special relationship that often went two steps forward one step back, but it saw some great progress for Leah. We asked Leah about the WAM program and her answers had us fighting back tears.... What have you learned? Claire taught me self love. She showed a lot of empathy for me, and sent me lots of positive affirmations, which were really helpful. What is the most important thing you will take from this experience of mentoring.? It was really good to have someone that wasn’t clinical to talk to. What are some of the changes you have noticed in yourself? I find it easier to talk to people now. If you had not engaged, how would life be different? "I really needed someone to talk to about my family problems. I would not have as much self love if I didn’t have Claire as my mentor. *Claire & Leah are not their real names. For more WAM stories visit: http://womenandmentoring.org.au/our-stories/
