21.01.2022 Meet Kat Harding, Freelance Video Tech. With skill sets and experience that ranges from projectionist, media server programmer, director and camera operator to systems engineer and AV technical supervisor. Her resume reads like a festival line up. How do you think you learnt to stay calm under pressure? I think it’s lots of corporate jobs, you learn how to handle the intensity. You can’t be too comfortable and content. If you don’t have just a little bit of nerves, something... will be sure to go wrong. Any advice you’d give women coming into the industry? Don’t be scared. Come in knowing you’re equal. I never felt like I was missing work because I’m a woman. Be comfortable with who you are, know you can do what the guys can do. Come in and just be powerful. Want to read more about Kat? Jump on the Women in AV Australia website and head to our News page. You’ll find a link to her story. #womeninav #genderdiversity #videotech #av #projection

20.01.2022 We're excited to share our brand new look. We've been busy during the lockdown period. While the events industry hit the pause button, we hit the go button on a fresh look. A new logo. And a brand new website. Our logo has evolved to reflect our values. We kept the colour purple, as the internationally recognised colour for women. And the diamond shape represents strength, courage, harmony and longevity which holds true to our values. The three shapes in our logo represent t...he three parts to our mission statement: Unite, Inspire and Empower. And they're all connected, like each of our members. United in our purpose to see more women working in AV. Check out our new website. A place where you can discover more about the work we do, communicate with one another and get involved. Let us know what you think. We hope you like it! www.womeninavaustralia.com.au

18.01.2022 Meet Morgan Higgin, Live Production Tech at @cityrecitalhall Morgan shared with us her journey into the world of AV. "I've always loved going to the theatre. From a very young age my mother would take me to see all sorts of shows from Mary Poppins, to Greese to Phantom of the Opera. The theatre in my eyes, was the place that proved that magic was real. That the world really was made up of dancing singing princesses and if you wished hard enough anything was possible. I mea...n I saw Mary Poppins fly with my own two eyes! As I got older I knew that this is what I wanted to spend my life doing. It didn't matter what section e.g lighting, audio, art department, director, this is where I wanted to be. After high school it was very hard to get a job without experience and even harder to find an entry point into theatre or film. I spent the next 7 years volunteering where I could on local community group plays or student short films. It wasn't til I moved to Sydney I finally got my 'big break'. I got a traineeship at the City Recital Hall. I was taught across all disciplines in theatre, Audio, Lighting, Vision, Stage management, set construction and more. This has opened a lot more doors for me in the industry and the network to build and thrive in a career in AV. I can't wait to see what the future will hold for me." #womeninav #cantbewhatyoucantsee #traineeships #cityrecitalhall #av #avindustry

16.01.2022 Check out the July edition of CX MAG for the feature on Melissa Goldsworthy, Freelance Audio Engineer. It was such a pleasure to interview Mel. With 17 years experience in the AV industry, Mel is passionate about the work she does. She loves to help musicians sound their best and bring client’s visions to life. "I get a lot of enjoyment out of being at the stage and helping the musicians out because if I can give them a good mix, then they're going to play the best that the...y can play." Mel was open in sharing her experiences as a woman working in AV. "I think probably the most discrimination that I've seen has not actually come from the industry. It's come from clients and punters. You know, I still get on a very regular basis Oh, I've never had a female technician before or you'll get the client come up to speak to a team of people and they'll always go to the man first. It’s little things like that. It makes me feel like our industry is actually quite progressive, even though we don't have as many female technicians. It might be other industries that we're working for that actually have that bias. Everyone that I work with is completely respectful and loves having women on the team. I think we bring a really beautiful dynamic to work and create balance on jobs. We have a lot to offer." 15.01.2022 Meet Jordana Davis, COO of @webcastcloud With virtual events and streaming being hot topics right now, we spoke with Jordana about her journey into IT, challenges she has faced and the current landscape of the industry. "I studied IT at school. It came naturally ... I just got it and I really enjoyed it.... Early on one of the challenges was being the only female in a very male dominated meeting. I loved seeing how meetings would evolve. There’d be a room full of AV managers or IT directors and the technical questions were always directed towards the male counterpart with me. Mid-meeting you would see the shift; the technical questions started getting directed to me as they realised I was actually the one with the answers. That surprised look in their face when they made that realisation was great! I loved seeing that shift in the room. I like big challenges; I see them as an opportunity. I think times have changed. I don’t think we’re entirely where we should be yet. Hopefully we will see more women coming into those IT director and AV manager roles. I think as we move forward there is going to be flexibility not just for women, but for men too, in the way that we work." Read more about Jordana's story and how she is coping with the current demand for streaming and virtual events on the Women in AV Australia website.
