25.01.2022 Repost our director @lyzevansphysio If you are really going to help women with pelvic floor issues or those who are pregnant / post natal you need to really know your way around a pelvis! The pelvis is essentially the house to the bladder, uterus and bowel and over the years Ive seen many pelvic floor issues improve significantly when we fix the mechanics of the pelvic girdle itself! ( and vice versa) The pelvis also plays a critical role during pregnancy, birth a...nd in post natal recovery and this is often over looked. During pregnancy we are looking for symmetry as this relates to the occupancy of pelvic girdle pain. Towards the end of pregnancy we looking to ensure the muscles around it are starting to relax and allow it to widen as needed in birth. In the post natal period we are looking to ensure good symmetry and stability return especially with tasks such as walking, single leg standing and squats. Once a woman is ready to return to impact exercise or heavy weights, her pelvis should be assessed to make sure it is ready too! You will hear me talk a lot about the importance of the pelvic floor but just as important is its bony home! If you are pregnant, post natal or have any pelvic floor issues such as leaking or prolapse have a think if your pelvis needs a little attention. It may just help you with your pregnancy function, your birth, your post natal recovery or help reduce your leaking or bulge. #womenshealth #pelvichealthphysio #pelvichealth #pelvicgirdle #empoweredmotherhood #womeninfocusphysio #bestcare See more

25.01.2022 // WHAT EXERCISE IS SAFE FOR ME IN PREGNANCY? // After a full week celebrating all things Women's Health- we have been inundated with questions in clinic about what exercises are safe in pregnancy. We thought we would answer this FAQ below. 1 You need to make sure that your doctor or obstetrician has cleared you for exercise. There are complications in pregnancy such as placenta previa, incompetent cervix (plus more!) that contraindicate exercise. ... 2 What is your current exercise tolerance? Pregnancy is not a time to start running if you are not a runner etc. Making decisions on based on what exercise you were doing up until pregnancy is important in understanding what your body can cope with. 3 There are physiological adaptations which result in increased shortness of breath, decreased blood return, increased resting heart rate, increased core temperature, softening of the pelvic floor and soft tissue structures around the pelvis, abdominal separation as well an increased load through the pelvis. These all influence how hard and what type of exercise your individual pregnancy can tolerate. So what can I actually do? Well the guidelines say 150-300 minutes of a combination of strength and cardio based exercise per week. You should be able to talk during exercise without becoming short of breath Listen to your body! If you are exhausted, experiencing pain, REST! Don't hold you breath during weight training If you are experiencing any leaking of urine or faeces during exercise contact your womens health physio! This is not normal. Pelvic Floor Exercises are so important to incorporate into your exercise regime. Watch for any symptoms such as bleeding, significant shortness of breath, dizziness or other adverse symptoms and seek medical support. Contact us on 9833 9093 and book an appointment with one of our physiotherapists to discuss what is best for you in your pregnancy! * * * * * #pregnancy #womenshealth #postnatal #physiotherapy #womenshealthphysio #pelvichealth #healthprevention #pelvicfloorexercise #bondi #miranda #pilates See more

24.01.2022 AND BREATHE ... It's that time of year where the phrase "just breathe" is coined around a bit. Whether it be around stressful situations, during a birthing course, or even at Pilates, what does breath control actually do? Correct breathing technique can contribute to:... quality pelvic floor and core activation optimal ribcage function assisting movement in exercise stress regulation and pain response Correct diaphragmatic breathing has both physical and neural benefits. The ribcage takes up around 20% of the body's total length! So ribcage mechanics can play a role in how we load other parts of our body. Considering that breathing is also part of our deeper core system, the pelvic floor and TA can also be loaded differently if our breathing patterns aren't optimal. Slower breathing also allows the body to move out of the sympathetic (fight or flight ) and into the parasympathetic (rest and digest ) nervous system. Switching out of the stress nervous system, dampens and decreases our response to pain. At the end of the day, we can all breathe, BUT, considering how integral breathing is for our nervous, thorax and core systems, are you breathing optimally? #justbreathe #breath #thorax

18.01.2022 http:// MEET HEIDI // The WIF team is constantly growing! You may have noticed a few new faces around our busy clinic . Heidi is one of our newest physiotherapists to join the team! Get to know Heidi below with our Women of WIF Q+A:... Q1.The role of a physio can be quite physical and strenuous. What do you do to stay fit, active and injury free? I always make sure I have plenty of sleep. I know that is hard for most and I’m lucky I have the freedom to sleep, but this is something I have always prioritised since high school. My friends know I love my nanna sleeps Also, I need to stay physically active - whether this be running, swimming, yoga, riding, dancing and gym. Q2. What tips do you have for mums looking for the work life balance? Its okay to not know what you are doing! Just take it day by day and you will discover what best works for you and your family. You are doing amazing. Take a deep breath whenever you can. Even if that means you hide yourself in the cupboard Q3. Did you set any health and' fitness goals for 2020? Have you stuck to them? I always wanted to tick off doing a marathon. I had signed up for Blackmores but of course this was cancelled due to COVID. But my amazing (and crazy) friends created a mara for me - I am so thankful for them and I ticked off my first mara! Yes I nearly died, but it was well worth it (for the burger and chips awaiting ) Q4. What is your best tip/s for women wanting to take better care of their physical health? Find out when the best time works for you - whether it's when bubs sleeping, waking up 15 minutes earlier, or sneaking out after dinner. Find a friend/loved one/health professional to keep you accountable. It takes time to form a new habit, its normal to struggle to find that routine. Q5. What about Metal health? Take a deep breath in through the nose, out through the mouth a few times in the day. There is so much power in pausing and checking into your breath and mental state Q6. Best thing about your job? Seeing the cutest babies every day!!!!! Q7. A song comes on in the car and you can't help but sing-along. What is it? Anything 90’s RNB Q8. If you were an animal which one would you be? 17.01.2022 Birthing and elective surgeries are perceived and funded so differently, however physical changes or even associated trauma certainly justifies the need for individualized intervention & recovery. 15.01.2022 // BELOW THE SURFACE OF MOTHERHOOD // Motherhood isnt black and white. Motherhood is a spectrum of emotions painted in a million shades and strokes. @lyzevansphysio has written a beautifully vulnerable piece titled "below the surface of motherhood". The w...alls of our WIF clinic hold so many stories, and if they could speak- how many womens lives would be changed. To the women who have openly shared such vulnerability, us as therapists are so grateful. You have shaped how we provide care, and for that - there are no words. "As I stood 7 weeks post-natal, having my abdomen painted, I felt vulnerable and exposed. But the words werent only my own. Behind closed doors women have shared their stories with me and shed their tears. 14.01.2022 Repost @elisethephysio It’s fascinating to see how physical, emotional and psychological spheres all influence the healing process. They aren’t separate entities- more interactive players that feed into one another, making healing complex and non linear. This can relate to chronic pain or even persistent negative mindsets- learning that you don’t have to believe everything your mind or body tells you. Be kind to yourself and accept what layer you’re in, but also be kind to other because you don’t know where they are in their healing process.

13.01.2022 // WHAT EXERCISE IS SAFE FOR ME IN PREGNANCY? // After a full week celebrating all things Womens Health- we have been inundated with questions in clinic about what exercises are safe in pregnancy. Dont hold you breath during weight training If you are experiencing any leaking of urine or faeces during exercise contact your womens health physio! This is not normal. Pelvic Floor Exercises are so important to incorporate into your exercise regime. Watch for any symptoms such as bleeding, significant shortness of breath, dizziness or other adverse symptoms and seek medical support. 10.01.2022 MEET HANNAH Hannah is one of our newest recruits to the WIF team. Working across both Bondi and Miranda clinics, Hannah is definitely one to keep herself busy! Get to know Hannah a little more below!... Q1.The role of a physio can be quite physical and strenuous. What do you do to stay fit, active and injury free? I exercise every morning to kick start my day and it gives me so much energy. I love running (the Coogee stairs are a nice little challenge!), doing Pilates and weights and just walking everywhere I can. Q2. What tips do you have for mums looking for the work life balance? Try not to feel the pressure of being a super mum and having to do everything. You need to find what works for you and your family. But also I believe it is so important to look after yourself and your health - you can't pour from an empty cup. Q3. Did you set any health and' fitness goals for 2020? Have you stuck to them? I am not really one to set new years resolutions, I just prefer to be consistent with staying active and training. Q4. What is your best tip/s for women wanting to take better care of their physical health? I personally think routine is such an important factor. It is so easy to say I will do it later, or tomorrow but if you find what works for you, create a plan and stick to it, it becomes routine and a habit and makes things a lot more achievable. Setting small realistic goals is also a really nice way to stay motivated. Q5. What about Metal health? Just stopping to breath and reset. But again find what works for you whether it be a walk around the block, sitting meditating or exercising. It is so important to ensure you are looking after yourself in every aspect. Q6. Best thing about your job? Educating and empowering women throughout their different life stages and letting them know they are never alone Q7. A song comes on in the car and you can't help but sing-along. What is it? To be honest I am a terrible singer but in the car alone I will turn anything up and try to belt out a tune! Q8. If you were an animal which one would you be? A bird. Q9. Best thing about working at WIF why us? Working with such a supportive group of ladies who are all so passionate about helping other women Q10. Favourite place to eat in Sydney? I love the Lion and Buffalo cafe in South Coogee, if you haven't been you need to. Q11. Favourite quote? I read one recently that I really liked - 'Don't measure your progress with someone else's ruler"

08.01.2022 // World Breast Feeding Week // Repost @drrebeccamoore #breastfeedingawarenessweek. Just a big hug to those triggered by this week. How you feed is your journey. Your choice.... Your body. Your history. We all come to feeding with many stories. Our own unique history, Sometimes breastfeeding is traumatic because of a prior assault. Because it triggers low mood. Because it hurts. Because you just dont like it. Because birth was traumatic and your milk supply is low. Because you have an undiagnosed tongue tie. How you feed your baby is entirely up to you. What matters is you are supported in that choice, not shamed or coerced or bullied. Not forced to feed in one way or another. You do what feels right for you. What you are able to do in that moment and time. And its ok to feel sad and angry if you cant feed how you wanted or expected to. Its ok to mourn this. Its ok to stop because you are just too tired or its affecting your mental health. Breast isnt best for all. Fed baby is best for all. Supported mum is best for all. As women lets please support other women in their choices. Lets hear them, respect them and honor them. Love to all today, breast feeding, chest feeding, tube feeding, mixed feeding, cup feeding, donor milk feeding. 02.01.2022 // RETURN TO RUNNING AFTER BIRTH // Itching to get back to pounding the pavement? At WIF we understand how running is not only physically empowering but also mentally liberating. After child birth however, there are many changes that inhibit this return and which can be infuriating. We aren’t just talking about physical barriers, but also the fact that there has been a lack of focus, clarity and consistency for postnatal return to exercise (Evenson et al, ...2014). Exercising is a public health priority and its benefits are undisputed in their physical and psychological spheres. Whether it be preventing or managing chronic diseases, improving quality of life, improving mood and reducing stress the advantages of physical activity are endless. We are all so passionate about the therapeutic and healing effects of exercise we wanted to design a structured program that addressed this barrier to empower mums to return to running. There are 4 components of the body that need to be functioning optimally in order to begin running safely. These are your: 1. Pelvic Floor 2. Core Control 3. Lumbopelvic Stability 4. Cardiovascular Fitness It is important to note that pelvic floor weakness and dysfunction is the BIGGEST barrier to returning to running. After having a baby the pelvic floor is weak and injured in most women- regardless of delivery. Vaginal deliveries, instrument use, tears and avulsions increase the risk of pelvic floor dysfunction, however caesarean sections have their own recovery timeframes that must be respected. Without a functional, strong pelvic floor running is not safe.
