25.01.2022 Should you need to consider a reduction in staff hours, or changing the wording of leave policies, review these decisions with a gender equitable lens. Question why these decisions are being made - don’t reduce a female’s hours just because she may have a partner that is able to support her, or children at home to look after. If schools close, ensure you are advising and/or encouraging your male employees to work from home or take leave to look after the children, equally a...s you would your female employees. If a female employee is required to stay at home with children, offer her the ability to design her own roster or offer flexible start and finish times.

19.01.2022 We are all keen to get back to work. It has been positive that most states have been easing restrictions. In some cases in hospitality, (with service to the tables) more staff will be required per guest. A skilled workforce is highly regarded, many of our Gaming and Hospitality members are highly skilled.

18.01.2022 Our workplaces are the social hearts of Australia and New Zealand. Closing down an industry that is built around social interactions is necessary at this time due to the COVID19 pandemic. We urge everyone to #StayHome We are prepared to wait it out, we need to, but we can't wait to get back to work so everyone can socialise, be entertained and laugh in our clubs, pubs and venues that Women in Gaming & Hospitality represent.

14.01.2022 Working From Home - it’s the phrase du jour. I (Steph) write this from home, and chances are if you usually work in an office, you’re probably reading this from home too. The spread of Coronavirus means we all need to practice ‘social-distancing’ to help #flattenthecurve, however practicing social distancing goes against our very basic human need and desire for connection. Decades of evidence demonstrate that human connection protects individuals against anxiety and uncertai...nty. The two very things we are seeing heightened levels of at the moment. One serious impact of social distancing, which may not be obvious but does needs to be spoken about is Domestic and Family Violence (DFV). The Coronavirus pandemic presents a unique case though, where victims and their perpetrators are being asked (in some cases forced) to stay at home. For many victims the workplace is their only refuge from violence. In a crisis like this, reach out to your colleagues, particularly those who are social-distancing or self-isolating. While it may not be business as usual in our communal place of work, we must still maintain connection and communication with our colleagues and peers. Be kind, and look out for each other. 13.01.2022 Out of crisis, can come great innovation. How's this for a bit of positivity and inspiration... Julia Steel (speaker, author, trainer and coach) had an idea, which was dreamt up only last Friday - to bring the world’s most forward-thinking leaders, experts and performers together in 1 continuous, 19-day online conference. Less than a week later, we are now on day two of the 19 day #Vid19Conference. A remarkable feat.... With increasing numbers of people working from home or isolated thanks to COVID-19, people are looking for new ways to generate connection and conversation and this is fantastic initiative allowing people to do just that. Topics include ‘What working parents know about working from home’, ‘Communications in moments that matter’ and ‘Human-centred leadership for remote teams’ just to name a few. Check out the line-up, with new speakers announced daily - https://vid19conference.com/ #conference #leadership #leaders #experts #covid19 #connection #coronavirus #converstions #online #communication #flexiblework #inspiration #innovation #ideas

10.01.2022 With COVID-19 now considered a global pandemic, we have seen immense and rapid impacts for individuals and business. While many organisations are exercising flexible work polices in the form of advising staff to work from home, or holding meetings via video conference rather than face to face, this is not possible for customer facing staff. There are many knock on effects that COVID-19 will have including parents needing to stay home to look after children should schools clos...e, casual hours being cut as there is a downturn in customer trade, and possible redundancies just to name a few. During this unprecedented time, it’s critical to be aware of our unconscious bias when making decisions regarding personnel in the workplace. Question the HOW and WHY decisions are being made regarding shifts, staff on leave, staff in self-isolation and who manages up etc. The COVID-19 crisis is an opportunity to challenge entrenched social dynamics and systemic functions in which our organisations operate, and we need to challenge these in a way that benefits both women and men. As we have already seen, changes to our workplace are no longer dependent on workplace culture only, but out of community necessity. We must make conscious decisions that benefit all employees.

09.01.2022 Happy Mother’s Day to all the magical mums.

09.01.2022 With borders easing and licensed venues across the country opening up and being able to increase numbers, the news looks positive to get people back to work. There is of course different rules from state to state in Australia and New Zealand which seems to be leading the way. As well as the various government websites the gaming council site is a good one to be up to date. https://www.austgamingcouncil.org.au/
