24.01.2022 Women Making Gravy came about in a way that may shock you to know. Let’s travel back to circa 2012. At the time I ran a Real Estate Photography Business and was in what I believed a happy and healthy relationship. My partner at the time was moving interstate for work so a decision was made that I’d finish up that business and move too. After making all the big life changes such as moving out of my house and finalising my business, only a couple of short weeks before the move... I found out my partner had been unfaithful. Devastated, broken and lost, I moved back to my family property in northern NSW to figure out my next move. Shortly after, unsurprisingly, I was diagnosed with depression and it was debilitating. There were many weeks on end I struggled to have any normal daily function. It was then around four months after the breakdown of my relationship that I made the decision that I needed to have a purpose to get out of bed each morning and shortly after I started a career in Wedding Photography. In the first couple of weeks of COVID I experienced the huge realisation that the pandemic would all but make my stable, thriving Wedding Photography Business all but dead. I was staring down the barrel of at least 5-6 months of very minimal work. And it wasn’t the financial stress that had me worried, it was the lack of purpose. It was the lack of having a reason to get up every day. What would happen to my mental health if I did not do anything or very little in that time? Would I take another turn? What would become of me?! I know of all things I need in life, I need purpose hence Women Making Gravy was founded. I’ve heard weird and wonderful and inspirational and unique stories to how businesses are started sometimes out of necessity, often for a reason that cushions a pain point in someone’s life. These are our top 5 super engaging content ideas! 1. A valuable giveaway. Offer something that your ideal target market would really love to win. The higher the value the more engagement you should expect.... 2. Your opinion. Don’t be afraid to rock the boat. If you are an expert in an area and your opinion may resonate with others, it may be advantageous for you to speak up. You’d be surprised how impactful and positive this can be! 3. Trending topics. Talk about what is happening and make sure you’re one of the first in your industry to share and discuss it. 4. Top 10 lists. This is a good one. Give advice or value to your followers. Lists are always engaging and interesting to readers which helps with engagement. 5. Be real. Don’t be afraid to share your vulnerabilities and struggles. Your followers will appreciate your authenticity and by doing so, you are creating a community and tribe based in trust and connection. To resonate with others is to connect on a digital level. 18.01.2022 We did it. Just over a week out from being on the road for 10 days straight we decided that we were going to hold workshops in as many rural and regional NSW towns before COVID restrictions ramped up. It was ALWAYS a risk but we couldn’t have timed it better with finishing up only hours before the QLD border closed! We wanted to give as many businesswomen as possible in these areas the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of growing an engaged following on Instagram and maxi...mising their results when it came to posting. In 10 days we trained 178 people which was no small feat considering we did very little marketing and the workshop tickets were predominately promoted through Instagram and word of mouth. Thank you to to venues who opened their doors for us (despite restrictions and challenges surrounding COVID) and thank you to the people who encouraged their friends to attend the workshops. Most importantly, thank you to the people who joined an event. The support was incredible! 03.01.2022 Who hates photos? Who hates the sound of their own voice? Who hates recording themselves on videos? Not only do I hate all of the above, I have to make a really honest confession. I’ve been watching other experts in my industry and they’re always so done up and perfectly presented. I honestly don’t know how they have the time to put on a full face and blow dry their hair every morning.... And because of this, I have held back. I have not shot off the cuff stories during the day because I have greasy hair or I’m in my house gear or I’m packing some serious bags under my eyes. I have worried that if you see me at work, from home, you might curse your judgement on me. And I have been thinking about this A LOT. If maybe I always look well maintained maybe that puts pressure on others too, not to share content because they haven’t washed their hair for a few days (or a week), they have baby spew down the front of their shirt or they’ve just come in from the paddock. I haven’t been keeping it real and as a result, I’m hindering WMG. I’m not being true to what this page is all about and that’s helping other women in business. I’m not being truly authentic which is what I encourage everyone else to be! I’m simply not walking the walk. Because for me, being authentic means I do have greasy hair days, no makeup days and an old T-shirt on that I’ve owned for years days. What truly matters here is that you all learn and all use this page as a resource to improve your own businesses. So I make a promise to you going forward that I’ll keep it a little more real.
