22.01.2022 Fresh from that 2010 Asian Cup win (replayed last night), the Westfield Matildas are travelling back thru time once more this Monday, which is exactly 32 years ...since our first FIFA match against Brazil at the 1988 pilot World Cup in China. In fact, it was the first EVER womens football match that FIFA held - quite some piece of history. At 7 pm Sydney time this Monday 1 June, we will be firing up YouTube and watching this historic match - just like its 1988. See Julie Dolan, Joanne Millman Kerry Hetherington Carol Vinson Deborah Nichols and more (team lists in picture below) with a young Sissi Do Amor and Michael Jackson in action for Brazil. Can we beat the might of Brazil when we dont have DVDs or the internet to scout them? How will we cope with the stifling heat of the early kick-off in a southern Chinese summer? Will we deal with the pressure of a 15,000 crowd and the need to prove to FIFA that women DO deserve a proper FIFA Womens World Cup? Hope you can will join us! Feel free to tweet along using the hashtags #BRAvAUS #32years and follow @MatildasAlumni on Twitter. Heres the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m4qIVOSF78 ... and no peeking til Monday 1st June. Start the video at *exactly* 7 pm SYD, 6.30 pm ADL, 5 pm PER, 11 am MILAN, 10 am LONDON, 6 am RIO.

20.01.2022 Wonderful story in the Guardian for NAIDOC week on former Socceroo Jade North, who I interviewed for a Women Onside webinar 'Race, Privilege and Football'. Jade... opened up about the shame he felt, and overcame, as sport enabled him to connect and contribute, eventually captaining both club and country. Jade was the first indigenous man to lift the national championship trophy in any code of pro football in Australia. Australia’s got a dark history we get that and it’s coming out more and more but I also believe that we are who we are today, and that’s one thing I’d love to teach people as well. Us, as humans, we can always educate people about what happened in the past. Thanks Jade for sharing your story, alongside Bruce Djite & Shireen Ahmed. We can all learn from you The full webinar is here: Race, Privilege and Football: https://lnkd.in/gx_scrP) The story is here - beautifully written by Samantha Lewis. #football #NAIDOC #respect https://www.theguardian.com//jade-north-the-former-soccero

13.01.2022 This Monday, Heidelberg United FC had the pleasure of hosting the Victorian Launch of Lee McGowans and Fiona Crawfords book Never Say Die: The Hundred-Year O...vernight Success of Australian Womens Football at Olympic Village. Special guests included Rachel Bach By The White Line Shona Bass and Kate Gill (Former Matildas) and Steph Catley, Aivi Luik, Kyah Simon and Elle Carpenter (Current Westfield Matildas and @melbournecityfc Players). The night was hosted by our very own Head of Womens Football Helen Tyrikos and the Social Club was at capacity with VIP football guests even before the Heidelberg NPLW players rushed over after training to get a photo with their idols. It is events like these that lift the profile and focus of Womens Football in Victoria. It was a privilege to host the launch at our great Club. The Club has played a big part in Football in Australia for decades and I think it was a great opportunity to show Victoria that Heidelberg is really serious about the profile of the Womens Game, Helen Tyrikos. The book shares stories of triumph in the face of overwhelming odds and reveals that at its core, Australian womens football is about community, endurance, and collective success. Something Heidelberg United FC #thepeoplesclub definitely understands. Special thanks to our partners Women Onside, Eltham Bookshop and NewSouth Books. #womeninfootball #thepeoplesclub #unitedwestand #matildas #football #bergers #hufc #wleague #nplw #womensfootball
