25.01.2022 "Professor Jayashri Kulkarni, who runs The Alfred hospital women's mental health clinic, said: "We have been absolutely flooded with cases of women seeking support. "We have never had so many referrals. The data strongly shows that women of all ages middle aged, older, younger women are struggling more with depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder due to the impacts of COVID-19." The professor of psychiatry at Monash University said the clinic was also treat...ing a growing number of patients with self-harm injuries and an increasing cohort of women who had not experienced mental health issues before the COVID-19 pandemic. The pyschological consequences of social isolation, the stress of home schooling on-top of other duties such as caring for elderly relatives, and the economic stress of the pandemic were all contributing factors, Professor Kulkarni said." https://www.theage.com.au//absolutely-flooded-record-numbe

25.01.2022 "Now more than ever is a time for formerly incarcerated people to be heard. We know what it is like to sit in an overcrowded cell once built for one but now house two or three, we know what it feels like to not have access to Medicare funded health services and we are hearing first-hand the ongoing hardships and health risks experienced by those inside during the pandemic. We have the expertise and we have the answers, hear us, join us, work with us. While the National Network is fundamentally committed to decarceration, the need to move away from using prisons and other systems of social control in response to crime and social issues, we are especially vocal about the need to decarcerate during a pandemic." https://www.croakey.org/freeher-calling-for-the-release-of/

24.01.2022 ANNOUNCEMENT - Today we launch a huge crowdfunding campaign after receiving news from the Community Broadcasting Foundation that we would not be awarded any ope...rational funding this year. This is a devastating blow to our broadcasters, volunteers, staff and the communities we service. If the pandemic and global civil rights movements have taught us anything, it is the need for resilience and trustworthy media. This means fighting for media justice and passing the mic to the most marginalised. We've been doing it for 37 years! This is an SOS. We need your support to keep Sydney's most radical radio station on the airwaves! Please share with your friends and family, no donation is too small. Over the next six weeks we will be sharing stories from our broadcasters across social media, so follow our feeds. 21.01.2022 "Its 20 years since the release of Talkin Up to the White Woman, an innovative text that made a serious intergenerational intellectual impact on First Nations women on this continent and overseas, where Moreton-Robinson was made a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In the book which has never been out of print Moreton-Robinson not only analysed and criticised how white feminists constructed their ideas about Aboriginal women, but also showed how Aboriginal women made their own intellectual constructions of white feminism. This is hardly novel in First Nations public life today, in part because of Moreton-Robinsons groundwork; she says the book catalysed a way of thinking about representation as an epistemological possession, which came to also shape her later works on The White Possessive."

20.01.2022 Demands from a coalition of residents, family members and community 1. All public housing estates to be placed under Stage 3 COVID-19 restrictions like all our neighbours so we can still leave our homes for work or education, exercise, medical care or care giving, or shopping for supplies. 2. The Victorian Government must withdraw all 500 Police and Authorised Officers from the inside of all public housing estates. 3. The Victorian Government must implement infection prevent...ion measures such as regular disinfection and cleaning of communal spaces, and distribution of masks. 4. The Victorian Government must set up testing sites in walking distance of the nine public housing estates instead of inside of the public housing estates in order to prevent the risk of spreading COVID-19. 5. The Victorian Government must coordinate services in support of current community led activities that are responding to resident's food, medical, financial, mental health and social service needs. 15.01.2022 "As Black, Brown, Indigenous people and allies in the United States and across the world collectively rise up to end systemic racism and violent police practices, it was necessary for us here in Australia to also rise. This is a global movement, and this is an issue that Australia is a part of too. When the footage emerged of the murder of George Floyd by four Minneapolis police officers, as he desperately pleaded I cant breathe, we were all horrified and outraged, but not... surprised. We were immediately reminded of the cries of I cant breathe that Dunghutti man David Dungay Jr made as he had the life crushed out of him by officers in Sydneys Long Bay prison. We thought of Aunty Tanya Day, of Ray Thomas Jr, of Joyce Clarke, of Ms Dhu, of Kumanjayi Walker, of Veronica Nelson and of far too many others." https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au//why-we/15919704009972

10.01.2022 "Victoria claims to be progressive in its relationship with Aboriginal people and communities. There are conflicting agendas here, one where the government is supporting the progression of the treaty and the other where they’re comfortable in proceeding with the irreversible destruction of significant cultural heritage. Our bodies are at one with the country, we can feel the chains of the chainsaw grinding through our souls, our spirits. The sounds of those chainsaws will haunt us forever and be added to the already existing intergenerational trauma shadowing our people. There are no words to describe the emptiness we as Djab Wurrung are feeling right now. " https://www.theguardian.com//the-destruction-of-a-sacred-t

05.01.2022 It's the end of a rather awful week and we had some incredible wins yesterday regarding the punitive lockdowns in North Melbourne and Flemington. I just wanted ...to say that I know it is scary times, and everyone will want to move to protection mode for themselves and their immediate circle, feel as though the government is now all good RE the residents of the 9 towers. However, I encourage you all not to forget the residents of the 9 residential blocks. There is still a considerable amount of mismanagement and chaos - I know of many stories of people who have still been unable to access required medical care, often in distress, and treated with indifference or hostility by police sent with guns to keep them detained. There are residents at 33 Alfred St who continue to face a hard lockdown, many of whom who are not positive but are now locked in with those who are, waiting and hoping not to catch coronavirus. How frightened and vulnerable many must still feel. Do not forget them. Statement from residents - please share: MEDIA RELEASE: 8 of the 9 towers released, but the mismanagement continues The Victorian Governments recent announcement to lift detention orders from eight of the nine public housing estates would not have been possible if it werent for the advocacy led by the communities that live across the North Melbourne and Flemington public housing estates. In a matter of hours, we turned this crisis into victory, as the entire community came together, to support one another and speak up for each. Our elected officials and funded institutions were not able to provide for our basic needs - so we did that for our community. - Affirmed by residents in a statement. Residents, their families and community managed a health emergency on their own. They provided up to date information to 3000 people in 30 different languages within 24 hours, kept track of testing when there was no other agency doing so, coordinated a media response, and encouraged people to get tested. While Voices from the Blocks welcomes this announcement to lift the detention orders, the Victorian Government still refuses to meet all of our key demands. 33 Alfred Street, North Melbourne still remains under detention orders, still requesting basic information about their situation, and patrolled by police that will be soon replaced by prison guards. Residents, families and the community stand firm that there is no need for police in a health crisis. Especially while the same patterns of mismanagement and negligence continue with no clarity around access to PPE, interpreters, COVID-19 testing and how people who test positive for COVID-19 can access support. Residents have reported that their calls to the 1800 961 054 hotline set up by the Department of Health and Human Services take up to an hour to get through and many are left unanswered. Detention orders are a health risk. Locking people in their homes without the ability to support one another, without access to their regular health services, and the natural benefits of fresh air in a non hostile environment is a health risk. Voices from the Blocks key demands are: 1. For the Victorian government to allow residents deemed as high risk to relocate with family and friends located outside the towers, until the period the Covid 19 crisis is deemed under control by an independent health body with experience in this field. 2. For the Victorian government to create a committee made up of health experts, community members and residents, both under hard lockdown and in Stage 3, to coordinate the continued management of this Covid 19 crisis within the towers. 3. The establishment of clear two way communication channels between residents in the towers and decision makers in government that have decision making authority. 4. The appointment of an independent body of health experts made up of specialists from experienced in managing the complexity of the tower situation, with the ultimate aim of reviewing and providing guidance on all health and disease related matters undertaken by the Department of Human Services prior to implementation. 5. For the Victorian government to implement infection prevention measures such as regular disinfection and cleaning of communal spaces, and distribution of masks, for the foreseeable future, until a Covid 19 vaccine is available or an independent health body deems the Covid risk within the towers as not requiring such action. 6. For the Victorian government to guarantee Covid testing is carried out at the door of a residents apartment, instead of in the foyer for those under hard lockdown. 7. For the Victorian government to coordinate services in support of current community led activities that are responding to residents food, medical, financial, mental health and social service needs. #FreeThe9Blocks

01.01.2022 Tomorrow on Women On The Line: we hear from Tigist Kebede, counsellor and advocate, about how we can support the community in lockdown, and Tamar Hopkins, lawyer and researcher in the areas of police accountability and racial profiling about the history of policing in Flemington and what defunding the police would look like here. 8.30 to 9am on 3cr.org.au and available as a podcast immediately after!
