25.01.2022 FAST FACT: Did you know that world crises - like the COVID-19 pandemic - affect womens sexual and reproductive health?? HOW..you ask? Evidence from past epidemics, including Ebola and Zika, indicates that efforts to contain outbreaks often divert resources from routine health services including pre- and post-natal health care, and exacerbate often already limited access to sexual and reproductive health services.... Working to ensure women have access to this vital form of healthcare is fundamental to our role in advancing gender equality - being able to take control of the decisions affecting your own body is a fundamental human right. READ more here about the impact of COVID19 on womens sexual and reproductive health, courtesy of Womens Health Victoria.

24.01.2022 COVID-19 throws into sharp focus the need to address the social determinants of health: the conditions into which we are born, grow, live, work and age and the opportunities that come with those, which are very unequally distributed. The economic and social fallout resulting from necessary pandemic mitigation measures from COVID-19 compound an already inequitable society. People who are already poor, have precarious employment, high levels of existing debt, are experiencing ...homelessness, have poorer access to quality health and social services, are living with disabilities, are socially marginalised, and have the least social capital will feel the devastating impacts of this pandemic most. Their physical, social, emotional and financial health will suffer now and for a long time into the future. During this pandemic, and as we begin to recover from it, we must address the social determinants of health to prevent a massive and further widening in health inequities.

23.01.2022 THIS: The government needs to bring a gender lens to the budget on every single thing that is done to address the "gender disaster" that is the current economic crisis - otherwise well have a "two-lane road to recovery, a fast track for men and a slow lane to nowhere for women"... We fully support these sentiments from the CEO of the states peak body for gender equality, GenVics Tanya Kovac.... As a leader in our leader for gender equality, it is our job to listen to the experience of women, elevate these conversations and advocate for the structural changes necessary to change womens lives. #genderequality #genderlens #womensexperience #genderfocusedeconomics #womenshealth #womenandcovid #ourexperiencematters #hearus

23.01.2022 * Happy International Non-Binary Day * We must dismantle stereotypes about gender identity, gender expression and gender roles that are underpinned by patriarchal social norms. Today - on International Non-binary Peoples Day - lets take time to reflect and learn. #NonBinaryDay

21.01.2022 A beautiful collection of papers that articulate how First Nations people are being, and will continue to be, affected by this crisis in ways that differ from the effects on other Australians. COVID-19 exacerbates deep-seated health, social and economic inequities in Australian society, especially the long-standing inequalities between First Nations people and other Australians. These inequities stem from colonisation and are perpetuated by our current systems and structure...s. The COVID-19 crisis is opening up new opportunities for public policy change and many First Nation organisations and communities are leading the way. This is a time when informed policy bravery could create new foundations for a better future. We strongly encourage you to read on

18.01.2022 The systems and structures that "control" our society need to be closely scrutinised for a gender-equal recovery from the current pandemic crisis - that is, one which ensures womens and mens needs are catered for accordingly and equally, writes the CEO of Womens Health East, Kristine Olaris. We agree - and its what were working on for the women and girls of the Barwon South West region.

12.01.2022 A round of applause for this.... A new initiative will see Aboriginal women from across the state design a culturally safe and community-led leadership program for future Aboriginal women leaders. The Aboriginal Womens Leadership Advisory Group will kick off work with eight trailblazing women to help pave the way forward on gender quality.... The Government established the program in response to the disproportionately low representation of Aboriginal women in formal leadership positions. Aboriginal women routinely hold valued roles and responsibilities in families, communities and nations and it is important that they are also represented in leadership bodies across our state. At WHWBSW, we know that removing barriers that prevent the full participation of women in the economy and community is fundamental to achieving gender equality - and that is our number one goal! #womensequality #removingbarriers #appropriateaction #allwomen #advancinggenderequality #culturallysafe #culturallyappropriate

11.01.2022 Emerging evidence from The Australian Bureau of Statistics and Deloitte shows that COVID-19 is having a devastating impact on womens financial and economic security. Women account for more than half of the job lost in Australia during COVID-19. Job losses will further widen the superannuation gap between men and women.... Financial insecurity amplified as women access their superannuation early to survive. This has huge ramifications for womens financial independence, which is especially problematic for female-headed households. For women with overlapping experiences of race, class, disability and sexual identity, unequal economic outcomes will compound leading to increased risk of poverty. Some womens lifetime earnings will never recover from this pandemic. Governments, businesses, community leaders, and decision makers need to support the economic status and financial wellbeing of women in both the immediate response and longer-term recovery efforts from COVID-19. 11.01.2022 Have you ever thought about how our actions are visible and readily modelled to our children, whether we realise it or not? * That’s the premise behind the Mirror, Mirror campaign that Warrnambool East Primary School (WEPS) is running this year as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, from November 25 December 10. * Residents will see mirrors decorated by pupils in city shopfronts and are being encouraged to take a selfie of themselves in the mi...rror and post it with a message reflecting kindness/respect using the Instagram campaign handle @mirrormirror3280 and hashtags #MIRRORMIRROR3280 #reflectrespect and #reflectkindness * The campaign is set to gain momentum on social media and help people to pause and reflect on how they can model positive behaviours to the next generation understanding that respect is at the heart of gender equality, which is a precondition for preventing violence against women and children. Violence against women and children is a human rights violation of worldwide significance, with far reaching consequences for both physical and mental health. See more

09.01.2022 Having womens voices in decision making at a leadership level is CRITICAL to a post-COVID pandemic recovery that is gender equal --- that is, a recovery where men and women benefit equally in regards to the decisions made that affect their economic, social and every day lives.... Thats why were on board a campaign to encourage, inspire and support local women to stand from local council -- with elections taking place across Victoria next month (October 2020). This year m...arks a century on from the election of the states first woman councillor, Mary Rogers, and while Victoria now boasts the highest number of female mayors in history with 32 in place across the state, 13 of Victorias 79 councils have * JUST ONE * female councillor while overall, women account for just 38 per cent of elected representatives. There are also concerns that the extra burdens faced by women during the pandemic - such as homeschooling - will see less women put up their hand for a place at their local council table. The aim (under the Victorian Governments Gender Equality Strategy) is for 50% women on council and 50% female mayors by 2025 -- lets help us get there.....by encouraging women we know to stand for council and by supporting them at election time with our votes. 51% of people in our state are women! Greater participation of women in local government as councillors is VITAL to better reflect the views and needs of the Victorian communities they represent. CLICK THE LINK BELOW for a guide to standing for council as a woman...

07.01.2022 Older women have long been overlooked in national policies and programs. Something which has been highlighted during COVID-19. Self-isolation particularly affects older women, as women over 80 are twice as likely to live alone as men. Many older women have less access to, and experience with, digital technology, leaving them more vulnerable to isolation from family and friends. Increasing poor mental health outcomes.... Financial insecurity is high for older women who have lower pension support than men at the same age either as a result of the gender pay gap, caring responsibilities or because they lost their jobs late in their career and struggled to regain employment because of their age. They are also responding to COVID-19 as carers and among many of the essential service providers. #COVID19 recovery is an opportunity to set the stage for a more inclusive, equitable and age-friendly society. 04.01.2022 The pandemic isnt forcing mothers out of the workforce its just shining a light on long-standing inequalities. It all leads back to gender equality...as this article explains:

02.01.2022 Tomorrow, 28th August is #EqualPayDay. A day that marks the 59 additional days that women must work, on average, to earn the same amount as men earn in a financial year. The COVID 19 pandemic has had a disproportionate impact on women and could affect womens long-term economic security and rates of workforce participation.
