22.01.2022 Can sexual violence be avoided? Rules like don’t talk to strangers and don’t walk alone after dark may help to avoid general crime but they don’t help prevent sexual violence. They do nothing but support the myth that a victim of sexual violence could have done something to avoid it. In fact, the victim usually knows the person committing the sexual violence and most incidents take place at home.... #whirscqsvam2020 See more

18.01.2022 If you are thinking of reporting a recent incident of sexual violence to the police DO NOT: - change or clean your clothes - comb your hair - wash yourself... - move, clean or otherwise disturb anything at the place where the assault happened If you decide to have a medical examination the medical officer will talk with you about the examination process, gather evidence in case you decide to report the assault to the police and talk with you about the possibility of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. If you think you may be at risk of pregnancy talk to a doctor about emergency contraception. #whirscqsvam2020

17.01.2022 If someone you care about has experienced sexual violence, you can keep these guidelines in mind. Let them know where they can get help. Listen to them and believe them. Many victims of sexual violence find it difficult to share their experiences and fear they will not be believed. Trust they are making decisions that are right for them at this time. Ask them what they need from you. Let them know what you can offer. Recognise they may need time, space and energy to cope wi...th their feelings. Reassure them that their feelingsthat might include pain, anger, fear and shameare natural responses. Encourage them to seek help in whatever way they feel is right for them. Seek help for yourself as well; you can also be affected by the incident and you cannot expect the victim to help you with your own feelings. Ask the victim’s permission before you discuss their experience with someone else and honour their privacy. Remember that the only person who can be blamed for the incident is the person who committed it. See more

11.01.2022 Alternative Reporting Options (ARO) exists for survivors of a sexual assault. ARO (formerly Project USA Unreported Sexual Assault) provides the survivor or a sexual assault an alternative to making a formal complaint. Many survivors have reasons for not officially reporting the crimes of sexual assault or rape. ARO gives the survivor the opportunity to provide police with the full circumstances of their assault with the option of remaining anonymous if they wish. ARO doe...s not involve any judicial process. ARO can be an extremely useful healing strategy for the survivor and an effective investigative strategy for law enforcement agencies. Survivors can feel empowered by knowing that the information they possess and provide could be used to solve reported offences of a similar nature. Police can use this information to: assist other prosecutions against an offender and protect the community by enabling police to devise intelligence driven strategies designed to target an offender and reduce repeat offending. You have the option when completing the form to have a police officer contact you and discuss your situation. #whirscqsvam2020 See more

09.01.2022 Let's take a look at consent! . It is also important to note that consent can be reversed or removed at any time. In Queensland you cannot give consent if you are: * Being forced, threatened or intimidated * Being misled ... * Unconscious or asleep * Under the influence of drugs or alcohol * Under 16 years of age \ .

08.01.2022 Day 3! Here is a fantastic video on consent. It is easy to understand for all ages. It has been around since 2015, but it is worth the rewatch and reshare!

08.01.2022 Victims of sexual violence are often asked about why they did not yell, fight back or runaway. The truth of the matter is that people react very differently to incidents of sexual violence. While some people might try to fight off an attacker or run away, others may experience a ‘freeze’ response in an attempt to minimise harm. Just because someone does not fight backyell, scream or run away does not mean they are consenting. #whirscqsvam
