23.01.2022 THEY SAID ID NEVER GET A JOB STUDYING MARINE BIOLOGY, BUT I SURE SHOWED THEM! For as long as I can remember, I have always been a bit of a science and natur...e nerd, but mostly marine related, fascinated with the ocean and all of its incredible marine life. Georgia always knew she wanted to study marine biology and so she chose to study marine biology and aquaculture at JCU: James Cook University, Australia. That choice has taken her from Townsville to the Cook islands and back to Queensland, working as a pearl biologist, a science and data manager and now a fisheries manager in the Torres Strait managing the Tropical Rock Lobster fishery. Read more about how Georgias love of David Attenborough documentaries led to where she is today: https://www.afma.gov.au//studying-marine-biology-townsvill #scienceweek See more

18.01.2022 Researchers from South Australias Flinders University are trialling three new methods to extract the protein from seafood waste and microalgae. The trial is on...e of several projects underway at the Flinders Centre for Marine Bioproducts Development that aims to develop an alternative protein source using leftovers from processed seafood and marine waste such as fish skin, bones, crayfish shells, and beached seaweed. "At the moment, if you want to extract protein the process is tedious and it's not terribly environmentally friendly, says professor Kirsten Heimann, a biotechnology researcher at Flinders University. "We're looking into modern, green chemistry manufacturing approaches that can save money, resources and stop adding to the pollution problem." The methods under trial include microwave technology, ultrasound, and the use of a 'green' fluidic processing machine developed at the University, all of which researchers hope will achieve protein recovery through the breakdown of cell structures. "The protein content [harvested from seafood waste] can be up to 50 per cent, so it's a significant resource," she says. If the trials are successful, professor Heimann says converting the waste of seafood products could provide huge value-adding opportunities to fishing and aquaculture. That is where the immediate profit lies." https://www.abc.net.au//seafood-waste-is-being-tu/12649068
