20.01.2022 While these tragedies often appear to an outside observer to be "out of the blue," they are often the result of years of coercive control exercised over the victim. "Michael said physical abuse "occurred fortnightly if not weekly", but it was his father's intrinsic sense of entitlement, manifesting itself as control, that Michael considers being the primary red flag upon reflection." https://www.examiner.com.au//the-biggest-tragedy-buildin/

16.01.2022 Coercive control is a hidden form of domestic violence; a pattern of controlling, intimidating and manipulative behaviours. The February issue of Marie Claire Australia shared nine women’s experiences and insights of coercive control. We support the criminalisation of coercive control! Sign the petition to make coercive control a criminal offence: https://www.nowtolove.com.au//criminalise-coercive-control ... #coercivecontrol #criminalisecoercivecontrol #marieclaireau

12.01.2022 Christmas and Safety
12.01.2022 Today is the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and today we partnered with Engender Equality to deliver a 3-hour bystander workshop session in Launceston at the Albert Hall. The workshop session was for community members to explore and discuss what we can each do to contribute to reducing violence against women in our communities. We support the Our Watch campaign that Doing Nothing Does Harm. We all must do something when we see violence a...gainst women. How we help will look different for different people in different contexts - the only wrong thing to do is to do nothing. Our Mentoring Violence Prevention free sessions provide a safe space for people to explore what the options might be, and give people the chance to practice some new ways of responding. Everyone will have a different way of responding and that is okay - we are all different and have different contributions. Would you like to know more and challenge yourself to try a new strategy to address abuse in our communities? https://www.doingnothingdoesharm.org.au/support/

09.01.2022 Do you think hearing other women talk about their experience with the legal system could prepare you in a way a lawyer might not? We do. We’ve created a brand new podcast with Penny Terry from Healthy Tasmania that brings together the stories from women, support services and from lawyers, to help you get the best from the legal system we’ve got. The whole series has JUST LAUNCHED and we’d love you to have a listen and share. Click through to listen now or search for Rule of Thumb via your usual podcast app.
