25.01.2022 Our wonderful partnership with Stockland Shellharbour continues - as they exhibit the stunning photographs in our 'Resistance Resistance Recovery' exhibition. Please head on down to have a look. The exhibition is a partnership between us and the Illawarra Mercury. Support from Stockland and the Mercury shows just how powerful and important strategic corporate and community partnerships are in combatting domestic abuse: we deeply appreciate them. 'Centre manager Daniel Buch...anan said the exhibition was a chance to raise awareness of an important issue and show that the centre "has a bigger role to play in the community". "The exhibition is not something you'd expect to see in this environment and it serves a purpose as a conversation starter for people, which is a really important role for us to play," Mr Buchanan said. "We are really proud of our partnership with the Women's Health Centre and we absolutely support the centre's views and goals around the establishment of a trauma centre."

25.01.2022 A government remotely concerned with supporting "job creation & entrepreneurialism" among women would invest in affordable, high-quality child care. This government has revealed its hand (again). It's not remotely interested in giving women anything. Other than token "statements" Georgie Dent

19.01.2022 There is so much that can be done - if there is there is the will and commitment. Thanks to Judge Meredith Day Huntingford for showing how it can be done.

19.01.2022 Women are brave and courageous. Sometimes heroic in situations that Neerja Bhanot found herself in. Often it's just every day, in everyday situations.

18.01.2022 We're don't normally support elitist luxury brands and the injustice they represent in terms of deep wealth inequity across the world BUT this is great - Naomi Osaka shows activism in the name of social justice is powerful. 'Coming off the back of a year where she dedicated much of her time to social activism and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, featuring in Louis Vuitton’s spring-summer 2021 campaign is a sign of her commercial appeal being intrinsically linked t...o her social advocacy. On social media, she posted images of herself taking part in the peaceful protests that followed the police killing of George Floyd. And she’s continued to yield her influence over her 1.8 million Instagram and 820,000 Twitter followers by consistently talking about racial injustice. She has a passionate following of young people in her home country, Japan, and is expected to be one of the major faces of the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.' https://womensagenda.com.au//naomi-osakas-new-louis-vuitt/

16.01.2022 We will be operating normal hours January 26th. We stand by the #ChangeTheDate movement and support #AbolishTheDate. We believe that choosing to continue to celebrate #AustraliaDay on January the 26th is also a choice to celebrate and support white supremacy and to ignore the centuries of suffering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have endured - and continue to endure - through colonisation, dispossession, discrimination, murder, rape, incarceration, domestic a...nd family violence, poverty and the removal of their children. The pain this day causes so many people is not and never will be acceptable.

16.01.2022 Excellent development !

16.01.2022 Health and justice are inseparable. Unless there is justice, equitable access to the law, laws that protect and support all people but in particular indigenous people and justice being seen to be done we will never be a healthy community. Chair of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation Donella Mills believes integrating lawyers into health services is the way to achieve early intervention and prevention. We fully agree. ... We need to start talking about incorporating justice in the way we deliver primary health care. she said.

16.01.2022 Some of the boys are gonna be like, "Nah bro, you're a cuck you f**ckin' simp!" Some women and men will send me messages of abuse because "women do it too" or "...not all men are violent" but enough really is enough. No-one said all men are violent. Literally no-one said that, but if the rest of us "good blokes" sit around like men who do these acts aren't among us, then just how good are we, really? #NotOneMoreNiki

15.01.2022 "Long before God the Father, there she was God the Mother. Where did she vanish to, this great mother goddess? How did we women become so completely disposses...sed? It wasn’t that I wanted to replace a male god with a female god; it wasn’t that I wanted to find a religion at all. I was simply looking for some sense that women might have worth. And I found it: there in the old stories of my own native land, I found it. Filled with images of women creating, women weaving the world into being, I took up knitting. Thread by thread, stitch by stitch, I began to knit myself back into being. I had never thought of myself as being a particularly creative soul, but I discovered that creativity was a wide-ranging affair. I simply thought about what brought me joy, and I began to cultivate it. I dug my hands into this strange foreign soil, and I began to grow things. I began to reacquaint myself with the soft animal object that was my body. Slowly, spending more and more time outside, focusing on the wisdom of my senses rather than on what was going on inside my head, I began to weave myself back into the fabric of the Earth." 15.01.2022 We've been arguing this for a number of months. Still no new resources.

14.01.2022 Great interview on ABC Illawarra Breakfast at 2.18.09 this morning with Stockland Manager Daniel Buchannan about the support they are providing our Centre. A discrete 'safe room', provided to us at Stockland, is modelled on the Lisa Harnum Foundation initiative and is a place for women to meet one of our caseworkers if they want support for domestic and family violence - whilst out shopping. Daniel approached us with the idea and Stockland have offered the fully renovated ...and furnished room free of charge. Our partnership with Stockland Shellharbour, built over a number of years, is very much valued by us. This is a fantastic example of how the private sector, and the community can work together to protect and support women. Anna Watson MP - Member for Shellharbour

12.01.2022 Our thanks to Tania Brown, Wollongong Deputy Mayor and Nicky Sloan, CEO Community Industry for their powerful response to the budget, reported in the Illawarra Mercury this morning. What a disappointing and disgraceful budget not only for women, but the disadvantaged and those in the lower social economic demographics. Thanks for having our backs Tania and Nicky!... https://www.illawarramercury.com.au//illawarra-women-rea/

11.01.2022 Marie Claire is using its February issue to campaign for the criminalisation of coercive control across our country. The magazine features nine powerful images of Australian women - some well-known, others not so famous - to illustrate how coercive control does not discriminate. It impacts women from all walks of life and some cases, the outcome is murder. You can join the fight to criminalise coercive control by signing the petition at coercivecontrol.com.au ... 10.01.2022 Our warmest congratulations to the inimitable Vicki Tiegs - who was awarded a medal of the Order of Australia today! Vicki has supported us to such an enormous extent is hard to find the words to give her credit. Her relentless drive, enthusiasm creativity and generosity in working with us to establish the Women's Trauma Recovery Centre has been unparalleled. Thank you Vicki - this award could not go to a more deserving person. ... '....the impacts of family and domestic violence which fuel her latest desire for change - working with the Illawarra Women's Health Centre to establish a national-first women's trauma recovery centre for the region. "I want to see the women's trauma recovery centre come to fruition," Ms Tiegs said. "Many years ago, and I've spoken about this, my mother's best friend lost her niece through domestic violence. "She locked the kids in the wardrobe and said 'don't come out until you hear a familiar voice that's not your father' and took off out of the house to one of the neighbours ... and he shot her in the back "I was only young, 10 or 11, and I saw the devastation in the family and saw how domestic violence is the most horrific experience for families. "I don't want to sit back when I have the ability to bring that centre to fruition. As a city of Innovation, to have an Australian first like that would be something we could be very proud of. "But we need $10 million and need help from all levels of government and we need the community to get behind it." Waples Marketing Group Domestic Violence NSW ABC Illawarra

09.01.2022 "I like to say that home should never be where the hurt is, and yet that's the painful and hollow reality of families all across the nation who are permanently shattered by men's choice to use violence." #VoicesForChange

08.01.2022 Girls are our future

08.01.2022 Most of you may recognise Travis Winks from our local airwaves. What you may not know is that the Wave FM radio presenter recently released his memoir titled, S...hattered. This book depicts an unbelievably sad but true chain of events that lead to his family's self destruction over a period of 67 days in 2016. Importantly the book is a raw insight into the devastating impacts of mental illness and domestic violence on his family. The 67 days of pain started on 12 September 2016, when Winks' older brother Trent attempted suicide. His sister, a victim of prolonged domestic violence and at her breaking point, was then jailed for destroying her abusers car and trying to end her life by ramming a tree. In a culmination of events, his father was shot dead by police on the family property in Freestone, Queensland, on 17 November 2016. His mother had called the police to the family property, fearing that Winks' father was going to end his own life with a gun. Travis' story is harrowing, raw and honest. His book is a must read and highlights the very real impact that mental illness and domestic violence can have on families and relationships. My heartfelt thanks goes out to Travis for his support of my campaign to criminalise coercive control in NSW. On Wednesday, I shared Travis' story in Parliament. Check out the footage below

08.01.2022 UPDATE My Private Member’s Bill is scheduled to be debated in Parliament on Monday by Labor and Liberal members. I’ll keep you posted, but if you want your federal member of Parliament to support this Bill I would encourage you to contact them and ask them to speak on it as well.

07.01.2022 We love this one. Always give credit where it is due. Especially important when its a woman's idea and drive and hard labour. We've been overlooked for millennia and our ideas have been taken credit for by others for millennia. Lets make this our time.

02.01.2022 Our article in the Illawarra Mercury today. The Federal Government reports that it's COVID-19 Response Package since the onset of the pandemic totals $198 billion, including $184 billion in economic response measures and $14 billion in health response measures. $150 million - the amount committed to DFV services in March - is 0.08% of the total.... 'In this COVID created shadow DFV pandemic, inadequate funding and competitive funding processes make it feel like the our centre is currently the victim of financial abuse - the manipulation of money and other economic resources depriving women of the support and assistance needed for independence, resistance and escape from a toxic abusive relationship.'
