24.01.2022 While legislation and policies exist to protect gender discrimination at work, #sexist biases, attitudes and pressures related to unpaid domestic labour still hold women back in their careers. This article from Women's Agenda explores how these manifest:

24.01.2022 Celebrate #NAIDOC2020 next week with these films on SBS Australia:

24.01.2022 #COVID19 has impact women's employment, safety, access to healthcare and support services. COVID-19 lockdowns, border closures and supply disruptions have limited access to menstrual hygiene products in 30 countries according to Plan International:

24.01.2022 Can you repeat that? It’s a simple question that you can ask somebody if they’ve made an inappropriate sexist or discriminatory comment. By asking the person to repeat the statement, it gives them an opportunity to think about what they have said. It can also give them the opportunity to rethink their statement and correct themselves.... When we stay silent, we are reinforcing that the behaviour is acceptable. When we call it out, we’re sending a really clear message that it’s not okay. #16Days16Ways #16DaysCampaign #RespectIs #CallitOut

24.01.2022 This #NAIDOC2020, water was returned to Traditional Owners for the first time in Victoria since colonisation. Congratulations to the GunnaiKurnai peoples. This has come on the back of decades of advocacy, protest and hard work of Victorian Aboriginal people.

24.01.2022 Around one in five pregnancies ends in miscarriage before 20 weeks. It's not something that's talked about much nor is it formally recognised as either a birt...h or death. And those who've experienced early pregnancy loss often find themselves dealing with it alone, with no real way of expressing their grief. This won't be everyone's choice. But hopefully it'll help bereaved parents mourn the child they never got to meet.

23.01.2022 Our Watch ambassador Tayla Harris knows how to #CallitOut when experiencing sexism online. Now she’s encouraging everyone to #DoSomething and Support women by standing up to disrespect. #16Days16Ways #16Days #16DaysCampaign #CallitOut... www.youtube.com/watch?v=39cHa4ha1Wc See more

23.01.2022 While there were criticisms raised of the Federal Budget regarding funding for #women and women's issues, one area it does aim to address is the #gender disparity in #STEM fields. This article from The Conversation explores this further:

21.01.2022 University enrolment for #women is down 7% from 2019 and 2% for men. The #gendered impact is said to be due to women's unpaid caring responsibilities increasing during COVID and the increased cost of humanities courses. #women #highereducation #students

20.01.2022 Sometimes sexist comments are made by people who don’t understand that their attitudes and behaviours are harmful. That’s why it’s important to call it out. What’s obvious for you may not be for them. Respectfully informing them could help them to understand and support them to change their behaviour.... Changing harmful attitudes might not happen overnight. The more valuable conversations we have that challenge these kinds of behaviours, the closer we will get to achieving a gender equal society for all. #16Days16Ways #16DaysCampaign #RespectIs #CallitOut

11.01.2022 Just don’t laugh at the joke. Our Watch ambassadors Hester and Ben Brown know that’s all it takes to show disrespect towards women is not ok. How will you #DoSomething? Because #DoingNothingDoesHarm #16Days16Ways #CallitOut #16Days #16DaysCampaign www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C8MbdG6cR4

11.01.2022 People often use sexist comments as a ’joke’. These may seem innocent and harmless, but they contribute to a society which promotes disrespect and discrimination. A person using the sexist ‘joke’ may not intend harm, but the bottom line is they’re being offensive, not funny. It can be complicated and uncomfortable to explain this to someone, especially in a group setting.... One way to challenge these ‘jokes’ is to ask the person to explain what they meant by it. If you remain poised and serious, they may be forced to confront the plain truth that their comment was offensive, not humorous. This can also deter them from using these behaviours in the future. #16Days16Ways #16DaysCampaign #RespectIs #CallitOut

10.01.2022 Although it might not feel like much, a roll of the eyes or arch of a brow, a pointed glare or a disapproving look are all simple but effective ways we can send a powerful message to a person that their comments are not okay. By not giving airtime to inappropriate behaviour in social settings, we are committing to creating a safe and respectful community for everyone. Remember that any action is better than no action. It’s up to all of us to change the culture of letting an ...inappropriate sexist and discriminatory behaviour unchallenged by calling it out when we can. This can be something as simple as a facial expression to communicate your disapproval. To see how a situation like this might play out, check out this video by @OurWatchAus - www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Hwj38L9bxY #16Days16Ways #16DaysCampaign #RespectIs #CallitOut
