24.01.2022 The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence has ended for 2020, but that doesn’t mean that the campaign to reduce violence against women ends there. Sexual violence against women and girls continues to be prevalent in Australia and globally. In October, The Feed reported that an international forum that hosts thousands of naked images of women and girls had resurfaced after it was shut down by the FBI and Dutch authorities in 2018. On the forum, users illegal...ly share ‘wins’ - or nude images - of victims without their consent. Many of these victims are under the age of 18. A survey has found 1 in 3 Australians have had intimate images of themselves shared without their permission and the eSafety Commission has seen a 172 percent increase in reports of image-based abuse since this time last year. This is a form of violence against women and girls and can cause long-lasting negative emotional and social impacts on those affected. Please, if you see anything of this nature call it out. You can report image-based abuse to the eSafety Commission at esafety.gov.au. If you or someone you know is impacted by sexual assault or family violence, call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 or visit www.1800RESPECT.org.au. In an emergency, call 000. https://www.sbs.com.au//i-felt-violated-hundreds-of-deep-n

23.01.2022 Today is International Human Rights Day (and the 16th day of our 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence) a day to commemorate the United Nations adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the inalienable rights which everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Although often we might look to the atroci...ties happening in other parts of the world, we know that there are some groups in Australia that are still particularly vulnerable to human rights abuses, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, refugees and asylum seekers, those living in poverty, people with a disability, LGBTQI+ people and women. The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted deepening poverty, rising inequalities, structural and entrenched discrimination and other gaps in human rights protection. Only measures to close these gaps and advance human rights can ensure we fully recover and build back a world that is better, more resilient, just, and sustainable. Human Rights must be at the centre of the post COVID-19 world, including here in Australia. Today is an opportunity for Victorians to reflect on the lessons from the year that was, and explore how a human rights led recovery could help us create a more equal, sustainable and resilient future. #respectis #16dayscampaign #callitout #internationalhumanrightsday #16daysofactivism

23.01.2022 Sex and intimacy are human needs. While sexual behaviour may have changed throughout the pandemic, we can still be sex positive and take care of ourselves and each other. Staying at home may have presented an opportunity to explore your sexuality and to realise that there is not one way to have sex or one way that sex looks. There are lots of great and different ways to have sex as long as consent comes first. However you are having sex (or not having sex) throughout this per...iod, you deserve to be empowered to make decisions about your body and to have access to reliable, supportive information about your sexual and reproductive health. For many of you, the lockdown period may have been a great time to connect with each other and increase communication about sex and sexuality. It may have been an opportunity to explore your sexuality, your desires, and your needs. Your relationships may have felt under strain due to extended periods of close proximity, or you may be feeling pressure because of extended periods of distance. Whatever your experience, your rights to healthy, respectful relationships that are free from shame and stigma remain during a pandemic. #YouAreAPriority #ItsAllEssentialCare #GenderEqualRecovery #SexualWellbeingIsEssential You have the right to safe and appropriate healthcare, at all times, including during a pandemic. This means that the health care services that you access are high quality and safe spaces; are culturally appropriate and use interpreters; are open to questions and communication that helps you make the right healthcare choices for your situation; provide accurate and evidence based information; respect your privacy; and respect your pronouns and relationships. If you or someone you know has questions about accessing sexual and reproductive health services, please call 1800 My Options on 1800 696 784. You have the right to make your own choices regarding your sexual and reproductive health. If you feel like someone is controlling these choices by using pressure or violence, please call 1800RESPECT 1800 737 732.

20.01.2022 Our very own Genine Hook from the Women’s Health Loddon Mallee Health Promotion Team, and self-proclaimed cricket tragic from wayback recently had the pleasure of watching new documentary ‘The Record’ (https://documentaryaustralia.com.au/project/the-record/) and wrote a mini review for you all: It is hard to believe that it is only one year since the Australian Women won the T20 World Cup. We all now realise how lucky each and every one of the 86,174 people in the crowd we...re to witness this historic and amazing moment for Australian sport. I sat with three generations of my family at the ‘G’ that night. Alyssa Healy had won us the game in the sixth over! They made it look easy against an overwhelmed but fine Indian team. The new documentary ‘The Record’ is a timely reminder of the drama behind the scenes in the leadup games and within the inner sanctum of Australia’s BEST cricket team. I watched both one-hour episodes of the documentary in lockdown over the weekend. It’s stressful just watching the rain fall in Sydney threatening to ruin the chances of the Australian team to even progress to the final on the 8th March 2020. The documentary is clever and generous in recounting the pressure the Aussie team were under and even though I knew the result, I was still gripped by the story. The work of Nicole Minchin and Angela Pippos who both directed and produced The Record have expertly captured the drama, the professionalism and incredible talent of the Australian Women’s cricket team. Australian cricket fans are lucky to be enjoying the game during the playing careers of Lanning, Perry, Mooney and Healy et al. The Record rightly plays tribute to the great Allyse Perry who is the heart and engine of this team and Australian cricket. The documentary shows the synergy between Australia’s hard-fought-for and ongoing progress towards gender equality that has produced our national Women’s cricket team who are the best in the world. No-one in the MCG crowd on International Women’s Day 2020 will ever forget that game or the team. The Record reminds us how good it was. Watch it and celebrate (again) the team and the win. But also celebrate an Australia that was ready for the best Australian cricket team of our era to be our Women’s team!!

20.01.2022 What does respect look like? Please share your thoughts/pics in the comments below. Today we kicked off the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign and we're happy to share this wonderful online campaign by Multicultural Centre For Women's Health. The 16 Days of Activism is a global campaign that takes place annually in order to raise awareness and encourage positive community action towards ending violence against women and girls. It begins on 25 November,... the International day of Elimination of Violence Against Women and ends on 10 December, which is International Human Rights Day. The theme of this year’s campaign for the Victorian region set by Respect Victoria is ‘Respect Women: Call It Out’ - a call to individuals and communities to actively encourage the types of behaviours that represent and personify respect and to speak out against gender-based discrimination and violence in all its forms. There are a huge array of events happening across the Loddon Mallee region over the next 16 days and we strongly encourage you to get engaged, get informed and get active. For a list of upcoming events please see our website: https://whlm.org.au/events/ If you find some themes during 16 Days of Activism to be triggering and you would like to talk to someone: - Call 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) the national sexual assault and domestic violence counselling service. - Call Yarning Safe and Strong (1800 959 563) for a yarn with a culturally safe counsellor. #callitout #respectis #16dayscampaign

17.01.2022 Women's Health Loddon Mallee are proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week - Always Was, Always Will Be.

17.01.2022 This 16 Days of Activism event is a Q&A Panel exploring the work of the Gender and Disaster Pod. Disasters are ever-present in Australia. Bushfires are an annual occurrence and a threat to health, well-being, and the environment. The effect of disasters on women, men and people with diverse gender and sexual identities is long-lasting and harmful. The social impacts of COVID-19 and bushfires are almost identical, with very few differences. The increase in domestic violence ...is visible in the pandemic and has been documented after bushfires. Gender relations take a 50-year set back in disasters and allow incursions into hard won rights for women, people with diverse gender and sexual identities and other minority groups. The gendered nature of housework and childcare have become even more apparent with families having to home-school and work from home. For men expectation of being a protector and provider is exacerbated and frequently leads to harmful behaviours. This panel will explore a wide range of topics relating to gender expectations and impacts during Bushfires and COVID19. The panelists will explore ways that we are able to call out gendered norms and stereotypes, including violence against women and LGBTI people within the planning, responding and recovery phases of disasters in Victoria. Panelists include Debra Parkinson, Liam Leonard, Steve O’Malley, and Beth Taylor. If you would like to ask a question to our panelists please complete the registration form with your question, or email to [email protected] by 15th of November. 16.01.2022 WHLM work is underpinned by feminist ideology and the belief in gender equality. Our work centres around everyone having equal access to the same opportunities as one another, rather than be dictated to or discriminated against due to their sex or gender. ‘Suffragette’ illustrates the strength and resilience of the women who fought to ensure we have the liberties we enjoy today. ‘Suffragette’ illustrates the strength and reliance of the women who fought to ensure we have th...e liberties we enjoy today. #callitout #respectis #16dayscampaign tinyurl.com/y29uu24b

14.01.2022 We at Women’s Health Loddon Mallee are extremely proud and excited to be releasing our new podcast Not the Babysitter! This is a short 4-episode series featuring conversations with men from Central Victoria about their experiences of fatherhood. Woven throughout the dialogue is an exploration of gender stereotypes and the ways that these dads are actively breaking free from outdated and harmful social norms. Unfortunately, gender stereotypes about men and their capacity to... be caregivers continue to get in the way of healthy, respectful and loving relationships. Research tells us that breaking free from traditional masculine stereotypes will improve the health and wellbeing of both men and women as we see that traditional ideas about masculinity have contributed to men’s high rates of suicide, depression and anxiety, as well as violence against women. This series provides a platform to explore men’s voices within the gender equity discussion as we all work to improve the wellbeing of whole communities. To listen to the whole series now, or download it to listen later, please visit the Women’s Health Loddon Mallee website: http://whlm.org.au/not-the-babysitter-podcast/ Made on Dja Dja Wurrung country by Women’s Health Loddon Mallee with support from the City of Greater Bendigo and presented by Ella Bourke.

08.01.2022 The weekends are often time for us to catch up on some housework. How are the domestic chores shared in your household? According to the Victorian Women’s Health Atlas, 29% of women in Victoria work more than 15 hours of unpaid work in the home per week, compared to 11% of men. Compounding this, the global pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated existing inequalities in both private and public life. One example of this is that we’ve witnessed the burden of domestic chor...es and childcare falling more heavily once again on the shoulders of women. By challenging gender stereotypes and norms we are working toward creating and sustaining communities free from gendered violence AND we know that whole communities will benefit from greater gender equality and from challenging gender stereotypes and norms. The theme of this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gendered Violence campaign for the Victorian region set by Respect Victoria is ‘Respect Women: Call It Out’ - a call to individuals and communities to actively encourage the types of behaviours that represent and personify respect and to speak out against gender-based discrimination and violence in all its forms. Now, that's something we can get behind! 06.01.2022 Let’s talk about gender equality in the workplace. Currently in Australia, if you are a woman you are likely to be paid 14% less than a man. When it comes to leadership in the workplace, we also continue to see a gender gap, with women currently holding just 14% of chair positions and 27% holding director positions on boards. Women represent only 17.1% of CEOs and 31.5% of key management positions across the country. As we enter day two of the global 16 days of activism ca...mpaign, we are anticipating the release of the latest data on gender equality in the workplace from the WGEA (Workplace Gender Equality Agency). The launch will be live online from 12:30pm today where WGEA will be presenting the latest insights and trends from their world-leading dataset on the status of gender equality in Australian workplaces. This year marks an historic change in the landscape of the Australian workplace as a result of the global COVID19 pandemic. This dataset, the seventh reported under the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012, will act as a benchmark for future years on the effects of the pandemic on gender equality in Australia. The launch will feature a keynote address from Libby Lyons, Director of the Workplace Gender Equality Agency, followed by a panel discussion with leading employers and gender equality experts. The event will conclude with an audience Q&A. To register, follow this link: https://www.wgea.gov.au/data/wgea-data-launch-2020 #callitout #respectis #16dayscampaign
