25.01.2022 Massive shoutout to all the single parents As children start school again this week, we’re thinking of all the single parents, because we know many of you are juggling paid work, caring duties, housework and supporting your children with remote learning. We see the work you are doing it’s massive.... [Image Description: A photo of Alex Hughes and her 7 year old daughter smiling.]

24.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based violence. Each year, from 25 November to 10 December, World Human Rights Day, people around the world unite, challenge discriminatory attitudes and behaviours, demand gender equity, and call for action against one of the world's most persistent violations of human rights gender-based violence. This global campaign has been run...ning for years, and yet, these messages feel more relevant than ever. We have spent most of 2020 dealing with one pandemic, only to see an alarming increase in the already existing pandemic of gender-based violence across the world, including in our homes in Victoria. This year, the theme for the 16 Days of Activism campaign is "Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!", and that is what needs to happen, not just for the next 16 days, but every single day of the year. The work to prevent gender-based violence doesn’t stop ever, and neither will we. Gender-based violence is entirely preventable and we each have a role to play. #16Days #16DaysofActivism #OrangeTheWorld #BeAnAlly

24.01.2022 Pleasure and our sexual experiences may look different during COVID-19. You may have explored your sexuality in new ways with yourself and partners. There are lots of great and different ways to have sex as long as consent comes first. Or maybe you're not feeling super sexy at the moment, and that's okay too. As always, you have the right to make decisions about your body and to have access to reliable, supportive information about your sexual and reproductive health. Your re...lationships may have felt under strain due to extended periods of close proximity, or you may be feeling pressure because of extended periods of distance. Whatever your experience, your rights to healthy, respectful relationships that are free from shame and stigma remain during a pandemic. -- Contact 1800 My Options (1800 696 784) for info about accessing sexual and reproductive health services. 23.01.2022 Happy International Pronouns Day! Pronouns are small words that have a big impact! She/her, He/him, They/them. Whatever someone’s pronouns are, it’s important to respect them. Today is a good reminder that to create safe and inclusive spaces by never assuming someone’s gender or pronouns, and to use gender-neutral language.

23.01.2022 Women are more likely to have lost their jobs, have taken on more unpaid care responsibilities and be frontline healthcare workers. These are just a few reasons why their mental health is more likely to be adversely affected by COVID-19. 20.01.2022 This is just not right. Let’s break down the facts: Women have lost jobs, hours and income at a faster rate than men. There is NOTHING to address the huge job losses in women-dominated industries. Women have also taken on two-thirds of the unpaid care work at home up to $205 billion in unpaid labour in Victoria alone.... This budget includes NOTHING to address the gender pay gap or gender inequities in super balances. This budget included NOTHING to make childcare more affordable and support families juggling work and caring for children during lockdown. Searches for ‘Domestic Violence’ INCREASED by 75% since the beginning of the pandemic. But this budget puts $0 in spending towards preventing and protecting against family and domestic violence. We could go on. But to put it simply, women received around 0.038% of funding despite making up more than half of the population. Let that sink in. We received one third of one percent of the entire budget. Gender Equity Victoria have been calling for a gender-equal pandemic recovery since March. We’re joining the thousands of #CredibleWomen calling out the Federal Government for failing to take a gendered approach to the #FederalBudget2020 [Image Description: PM Morrison and Treasurer Frydenberg are looking over papers, sitting at a desk.]

But behind the scenes, we’re still advocating for a gender equal budget alongside the other Women’s Health Services and our peak body Gender Equity Victoria We need a budget that addresses gender inequality. 13.01.2022 For many people home is not always a safe place. We have spent most of 2020 responding to one pandemic, only to see an alarming increase in the already existing pandemic of gender-based violence. Rates of family violence during lockdown were amongst the highest they have ever been in Victoria’s history. This unprecedented rise of gender-based violence, including violence against women and children has been described as the ‘Shadow Pandemic’, or the pandemic that is happening... alongside and in the shadow of COVID-19. While it is necessary to stop the spread of coronavirus, lockdown presented many risks for those who were not safe at home. The factors that cause and drive family violence get worse during times of crisis. At the same time, victim-survivors of family violence had less access to safety and support, cut off from friends and family, financial independence, and the ability to access confidential support. As we continue to measure the full impact that the pandemic is having on family violence, it’s more important than ever that we take action. Even during a pandemic there are things you can do: Stay connected and make sure no one is left unseen: https://www.respectvictoria.vic.gov.au//respect-each-other Learn how to spot the signs and support a friend or family member who might be experiencing family violence: https://www.dvrcv.org.au//co/family-friends-and-neighbours #16DaysOfActivism #16Days #BeAnAlly #OrangeTheWord #EndGBV #CallItOut #EndVAW #EndVAWG #RespectIs #ChangeTheStory #BeTheChange #SpeakUp #EVAW #PVAW #VAW #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #EndGBV #GBVPrevention #GenderJustice #EndViolenceAgainstWomenandGirls #ShadowPandemic [Image Description: Blue background with illustrations of four faces with colourful hair and skin. 11.01.2022 Following the announcement of today's budget, Women's Health West welcomes the government's ongoing commitment to gender equity and family violence response. This year we called on the Victorian Government to deliver a gender equal budget that addresses the ways COVID-19 has hurt women, non-binary and gender diverse people hardest. We are pleased to see that:... $238 million has been allocated to support victim-survivors of family violence, with $18 million of those funds allocated to family violence refuge responses and $9.7 million to prevention and early intervention programs and services $13 million to implement the Gender Equality Act 2020 $170 million has been allocated to support women’s workforce participation, by providing free kindergarten in eligible services in 2021 $2 million to support LGBTQIA+ organisations that have been impacted by the pandemic and to assist them in supporting the community $40 million to Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to establish a community-led service delivery fund to support health and social services $12 million to support the new State Disability Plan and $209 million to support Victorians who are not eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Read the full budget here - https://www.budget.vic.gov.au/ You can also check out Gen Vic’s ‘score card’ outlining the wins and losses from this years budget below.

10.01.2022 Happy Ace Awareness Week! As we come to the end of #AceAwarenessWeek, we wanted to spotlight the last letter in the LGBTQIA+ acronym which stands for ‘asexuality’. People who identify as asexual experience little to no sexual attraction and/or sexual desire. There are many ways to be asexual, and ‘ace’ is an umbrella term to include anyone who fits within the spectrum of asexuality. There are many misconceptions that surround ace identities. Like any sexual orientation,... asexuality isn’t a choice. It is different to celibacy or abstinence, which is when someone chooses to avoid sex. 09.01.2022 In Australia, women experience higher rates of anxiety and depression than men, which has increased during the #COVID19 pandemic. 08.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Week The theme this year is ‘Always was, always will be’. It is a powerful reminder which recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have lived on, and cared for, these lands and waterways for tens of thousands of years, and have an ongoing connection to this country. Here’s a little bit about the theme from the National NAIDOC Committee:... Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Women’s Health West recognises that the land on which we work and provide our services always was and always will be Aboriginal land. Sovereignty was never ceded. This week, we are celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We recognise the true history of this country, which did not begin in 1788, but dates back thousands of generations. We have the oldest continuing cultures in the world, and as a country we must recognise that the 65,000+ years of First Nations’ history is Australia’s history. As sacred sites continue to be destroyed across Australia, this year’s theme is a timely reminder. Always was, always will be. 05.01.2022 As a society, we can stop gender-based violence from happening before it occurs. It is preventable, and we know what we need to do end gender inequality. Gender inequality is the root cause of gender-based violence, and creates the context for violence against women to occur. Sticking to rigid gender roles, social disrespect for women, men’s control over decision-making and limiting women’s social and economic independence all drive violence against women, including family ...violence and abuse. Such rigid gender norms, along with assumptions society has about relationships that devalue LGBTQIA+ identities and relationships, also contribute to violence experienced by LGBTQIA+ people. When rates of family violence are at the highest in Victoria’s history, we need to make the link to gender inequality and gender-based violence, so that we can stop the violence before it starts. #16DaysOfActivism #16Days #BeAnAlly #OrangeTheWord #EndGBV #ChallengeGenderStereotypes #SmashStereotypes #CallItOut #EndVAW #EndVAWG [Image Description: Blue background with illustrations of two women’s face with colourful hair and skin.
