24.01.2022 Some developments in WA to watch including the use of mediaton in some domestic violence restraining order matters. Some of the ideas such as not having to attend court if the parties agree seem positive. However, the suggestion that 'specially trained mediators' can overcome power imbalances in DV matters seems naive and somewhat concerning. https://www.lawyersweekly.com.au//29680-wa-to-streamline-r

23.01.2022 White Ribbon Australia commissioned a national poll and found that 70% of Australians believe that coercive control should be a crime.

23.01.2022 Language matters. Rape is not non-consensual sex, it’s assault, and an act of violence. When we shy away from naming the behaviours of perpetrators as violence..., assault, and abuse we allow offenders to control the narrative. The impact of this is a minimising the seriousness of the crime and even implying that victim/survivors are somehow a passive participant in the assault. You can learn more in the article "There's no such thing as non-consensual sex' https://medium.com//theres-no-such-thing-as-non-consensual #TerminologyTuesday #SVAM2020 #startbybelievingaustralia

23.01.2022 Many federal members of parliament condemn family and domestic violence which is important. However, who is actually prepared to speak up, support and vote for this bill that will protect women and children escaping violence in Australia? 21.01.2022 When Hannah Clarke made the decision to leave her dangerous ex the real estate agency for the home she'd fled took her to court demanding she continue to pay half the rent. And just two days before Hannah and her children were killed, she finally finished a legal battle with a real estate agency over the payment of rent on the home she'd fled. The end of her marriage also cost her friends, with some believing the slurs Rowan Baxter was posting about her on social media. Story: https://m.tweeddailynews.com.au//they-never-chec/4138822/

21.01.2022 CONTENT WARNING: This article talks about miscarriages and child loss. Overwhelming shock, grief and sorrow that's what 39-year-old Annabel Bower felt when her baby Miles was born still in 2018. "If someone in her [Meghan] position uses their platform to speak openly of such a taboo thing, it gives people permission to do the same within their own circles." 21.01.2022 "The feminism movements of the 1960s and 1970s successfully swept away many overt barriers to women entering the workforce, including overtly discriminatory laws. But we failed to also reform society's institutions to provide adequate replacement care for the children and elderly who previously relied on women’s unpaid work. It’s time for society to step up to the plate with our taxes to care for both our very young and our very old."

18.01.2022 When reviewing the Weapons Act to determine whether someone is a 'fit and proper person' to hold a gun licence, regard should be had to the applicant's full domestic violence and/or family law history. If there is a history of domestic violence it should be mandatory to then undertake a domestic violence risk assessment to ascertain if there is a current risk to a (ex) partner and/or children and/or other family members.

15.01.2022 Content warning : Discussion of various forms of domestic violence including coercive control, physical and sexual violence. "This change in law is important so that we have the ability in horrific cases to be able to prosecute abusers. However, its impact is also broader than that. We are asking for a wider change; education for police, the judicial system, front line services, and our whole community. Giving victims a way to name this behaviour is important. We also need to be able to deliver a clear message to every single person in our community that this behaviour, and the abuse of power and control in relationships, is completely unacceptable; it is criminal."
