20.01.2022 Kirsti’s asking that age old question .... How did we gals get into trucking - when EVERYONE wants experienced drivers

18.01.2022 One of our truckie girls has a moral dilemma and is looking for some advice. A good mate of hers is a linehaul driver, working average 18 hour days including driving, loading, unloading. His mandatory 48 hour stand down was due 36 hours before she spoke to him last night. ... He told her he’s ‘creative’ with his logbook - which he’s been done for before. He’s so tired he can barely stay awake. His bosses are aware and turn a blind eye. She reminded him BFM rules are there for a reason..... he agreed. So he knows he’s a risk. Technically she knows it’s none of her business, but road safety is everyone’s business. She’s a stickler for rules and safety and he knows that - as she used to work with him. If he has an accident and hurts someone because of fatigue, she says she couldn’t live with herself. He said ‘I’m so fatigued, so tired’...... morally and ethically she has major problem with it. Our female truckie is asking your advice on what she can do He told her if he stands up for himself they’ll just replace him with someone else so he just keeps going. She says I’m not driving that truck, but if something happens I’ll feel it on my shoulders. All advice gratefully received

15.01.2022 Hi everyone - I’m so glad I found this page! I’m wondering if anyone can give me some advice on getting into trucking. I’ve always wanted to drive trucks however I’m only 5ft 1 tall and I’m worried no one will hire me because of that.... Would my height be an issue driving a truck? Thanks, Ash

13.01.2022 Hi. I joined WiTA for a couple of reasons .... Firstly, I don’t have a lot of truck driving experience and secondly I’m finding as soon as employers hear I’m a woman - they say they’ll get back to me and don’t!! I've been on the road around trucks most of my life with my father, brother and partner. ... Happy to help load and unload at either end - a couple of years ago I had a lightbulb moment and decided to get my licence so I could take over the driving out on the open road and give my then partner a break. I’m an older woman - but employers don’t know my age so that’s not it. For whatever reason I keep getting knockback after knockback! I’d absolutely love to get into the industry and am now at the stage where I’m thinking I’ll have to buy my own prime mover. Obviously though, I’d prefer not to. I can move anywhere for work because I’m single so hopefully that will help, but like you said we shouldn't have to uproot ourselves to get a job! Wondering if any of you have hit the same brick wall I have? I just can’t get my foot in the door and am wondering what I’m doing wrong. Any advice gratefully appreciated. Thanx heaps Kerry

08.01.2022 Meet young Estonian woman Monika who’s chased her dream to drive quads down under. Way to go Monika

08.01.2022 There’s something we can all do as truckies to support our mates out on the road ..... If you’re at a roadhouse and notice a driver eating alone .... take the time to smile and say hi. If you think they need to talk, pull up a chair and just listen ... This seemingly small gesture could mean the difference between this driver pushing on and finding the help he/she needs or checking out for good.... Three words .... Are you ok

06.01.2022 Meet NZ/Aussie Truckie Kerrie Ford. In true Aussie fashion - this women is SO fabulous, I think we should claim her as our own! Kerrie wrote this very raw poem a few years ago after a young man she barely knew took his life - nonetheless, the tragedy’s had a lasting impact on her. Kerrie says the first three lines are borrowed, but the rest came from her heart.... She says she printed it out out and pinned it up in every smoko room and truck stop she went to. Over the years Kerrie says she’s had many, many fellow drivers share their burdens with her and hopes that by just sitting and listening, their load has been lightened because they know someone cared enough to listen. Kerrie says; It's true that a kind word from another driver, or even the lady who makes your toasted sandwich at a truck stop, can make your day so much brighter. Family are wonderful but they always want to fix stuff for you - or they get upset that you're upset - and that makes you feel like an ass for saying anything to worry them. We drivers have so much in common - we’re all away from home doing the hard yards - often in difficult conditions, we all want to run on time, stay safe, make a dollar for our families and be able to get home once in a while. Oftentimes the best conversations are with total strangers over a meal in a roadhouse. I've often driven away thinking I forgot to even ask ole mate his name but I feel like we are blood kin! I cried, he cried, we talked, exchanged numbers and, in several cases, they're still the people I confide in the most. Our workmates are just more family on the road. They're not shy about telling the fair dinkum truth - even if it's not what you want to hear .... but they know you NEED to hear it! I wouldn't trade my truckie mates for anything. They’re Gold! I'm a great believer in paying it forward. Pay out a random act of kindness every day - it’ll always come back around to you. Stay safe out there. I think we can all take a leaf out of Kerrie’s book
