24.01.2022 Some Dainty swallowtail caterpillars- Papilio anactus making short work of some of our native finger limes. Good thing there are plenty of other bush tukka plants they will steer clear of! Mandarin, orange and lime trees are also host plants for these guys

17.01.2022 Our nursery was host to a couple of interesting doves we have not seen before, any birders out there can positively id? Beautiful markings. I hope some of our outgoing trees eventually provide food for many different species in the ecosystem. If not from the fruit, the insect life they attract.

15.01.2022 Joseph coat moth caterpillars are one of the latest nursery visitors, chomping down on the clematicissus opaca and cayratia clematidea - native grape vines in flower trailing up the greenhouses. Good to support the local pollinators even if it does cost a few leaves!

05.01.2022 Another sighting today- A late instar of the Orchard Swallowtail Butterfly - Papilio aegeus. This one was feeding on a Micromelum bush tukka tree.

05.01.2022 Wompoo Invert update: Sighted! Male and female spiny leaf insect- Extatosoma tiaratum on a Silver ash. These beauties are endemic to Australia and eat gum leaves. It is said the females eggs mimic ant food, so ants collect them, eat a sacrificial portion then deposit them in underground waste piles, where the conditions are ideal for their incubation. ... 02.01.2022 Aviceda subcristata - (Pacific Baza) spotted this afternoon above the nursery. They almost appear to hop around the canopy feeding on insects. Mantis and Stick Insects being a fave, they also feeds on small frogs which is something I know we have loads of in the surrounding trees.
