25.01.2022 Some lucky ten are making a lightsaber at WonderLab in October which will glow in the dark and look very realistic

23.01.2022 Today we learnt about Alebrije - Mexican folk art patterns - to paint our fantasy clay creatures. First each child was asked to draw three to four patterns on a piece of paper taking inspiration from Pedro Linaress Alebrije sculptures and then paint their sculptures using the patterns. These artworks were done in clay on paper and wire armature and painted in acrylics on top.... What a bunch of talented children we are teaching at the studio

20.01.2022 Art Play creativity from the youngest artists

19.01.2022 Self portraits by preschool children We have practiced so many techniques and skills in this project over the course of two lessons: Drawing a face with India ink focusing on scale (creating a large portrait that takes the whole space of a page)... Creating backgrounds with watercolour washes Cutting the negative space around the face Arranging the face on the background And dont these artworks look gorgeous? Especially when you frame them

19.01.2022 We try to balance our program for older preschoolers by offering abstract process art experiences regularly. In this painting project the children were asked to paint with warm colours and put colours next to each other. There were no other rules involved and we purposefully kept the project abstract steering away from any representational drawing. Projects like this are very beneficial for children of any age. ... First of all, they are not intimidating as there is no pressure to create something that looks like the teacher’s example. Secondly, these experiences remind children that art is in the process - sometimes we just need to forget about the result and play with art materials.

19.01.2022 Here is our range of courses at WonderLab! Children in our studio feel welcome and supported to make a mess, move, express their artistic ideas and create their unique art works. They are encouraged to explore their individuality in a non-competitive environment and grow their artistic talents in a relaxed and safe way. ... At WonderLab we strive to develop children's creative thinking, problem-solving and imagination. We help parents raise innovators of tomorrow! @ Sydney, Australia See more

18.01.2022 If you remember my recent post about Miranda who is a very skilled artist at just 3.5 years old - this is she half a year ago exploring painting at one of our Art Play sessions! This is how children grow their artistic confidence to be able to experiment with art media as they grow older

18.01.2022 Today for our illustration course the children got to think how they can illustrate the Cheshire Cat - a whimsical character that has two distinctive features - it grins and disappears. For the disappearing effect we decided to try the printmaking on gel plates technique - the children created their own cat stencil and tried printing it using cool and warm colours. The children loved it and dont those prints look fabulous? @ Sydney, Australia

18.01.2022 Richly illustrated book about childrens art These are examples of genuine childrens creativity - it happens only when children are creating independently using their imagination instead of following teachers guidance. Note that most of the artworks are from older children - 7+ and they show the realistic developmental stage of drawing painting skills. Moreover, these artworks are highly creative as they were done independently

15.01.2022 Each birthday party at WonderLab is accompanied by a huge hand-made birthday banner - you let us know what your childs interests are and we create this custom-made beauty for the children to colour when they come

15.01.2022 Art appropriation vs art inspiration. At WonderLab we try to choose art projects that do not appropriate great masters art works. We look at the famous paintings to study art techniques and get inspiration but we never copy the artwork as it is. We believe that this teaching approach develops genuine creativity in children and allows children to express their own ideas.... Can you guess which famous artwork the children had studied before starting this printmaking project? @ Sydney, Australia See more

14.01.2022 This time last year my family and I were about to start a new project - my very own art studio where I can store my gazillion of art supplies and dive into a wonderland with children - one year has past and I can say for sure this project was my personal roaring success

14.01.2022 We expose children to a variety of art media and processes at WonderLab offering not only painting and drawing but also 3D sculpture making! In this plaster puppet project six year olds are practicing to tie knots with a piece of string - look at these focused and engaged looks at the faces!

14.01.2022 At WonderLab we try to choose the projects that allow the children to create artworks that look different. In this Starry Night printmaking project everyone was practicing the same art techniques and processes - creating movement using patterns and lines - taking inspiration from Van Goghs swirly patterns - but notice how unique and individual the artworks look! We believe that this method allows children to make most of the decisions regarding their work and, like adult artists, generate meaningful ideas for art themselves.

13.01.2022 Little Miranda is learning to score clay! Scoring is an attachment technique in ceramics and is an essential skill of working with clay. To attach two clay shapes together you need to scratch the surface with a sharp tool, add water to the scratches and connect your clay shapes. If you dont score clay, the shapes will come apart once the sculpture dries. Notice how for a very young child it is important not to force making something realistic - in this early stage of working... with clay the child is focusing on just attaching the shapes and learning to create a sculpture that can balance. This is the second stage of learning the clay medium. The first one would be to just explore clay as it is - playing with it, shaping, squeezing, pinching, adding water, dancing on it with your feet - all of what Miranda did last year during her Art Play sessions at WonderLab
