23.01.2022 KONGOKEN is a Karate Strength Training Tool. A traditional Okinawa & Japanese martial arts tool used as a HOJO UNDO (supplementary exercises) to the regular karate training in order to develop upper body, lower body, core strength & for balance training. The KONGOKEN is a large heavy iron or steel ring that can weigh up to 45kg. The theory behind this training tool is that its awkward shape focuses a student to use many different muscles when moving this unwieldy and heavy object.

19.01.2022 Memories from the Wongsdojo Hombu Karate event - circa 1988. Wongsdojo Hombu Karate school was invited to the street parade celebrating Old Toongabbie as the 3rd settlement set up after the first fleet in 1788. Great memories & fun day promoting Wongsdojo karate school. Old Toongabbie was founded as a Government Farm to grow food for the colony in April 1792. After eleven years, the government farm was closed & the land was given as grants to settlers & convicts who had done their time. Later named Toongabbie - derived from an Aboriginal word meaning place by the water or meeting by the water.

18.01.2022 Meet our CONCORD (NSW) Branch instructor: SENSEI PATRICK TSANG started learning martial art in Brisbane in 1977. He did Southern Praying Mantis with his cousin until 1980. Patrick moved to Sydney in 1980 & between 1988-1992 he learnt Goju Kai with Sensei Tony Chan but Sensei Tony moved back to Hong Kong. So in 1995 Patrick met with the Wongsdojo Burwood branch Sensei David Tsui who then introduced Patrick to Kancho Johanes Wong. That was the restart of Patricks karate journ...ey. Sensei Patrick has been teaching karate since 1999. Sensei Patrick is 5th Dan Black belt. He enjoys teaching & training karate because of the health, fitness & the friendships one receives. He says When you give to others what you have, it comes back to you as a reward. The wealth of knowledge & training that are gained can be taught anywhere you go. Sensei Patrick says that he gives full credit to his teacher Kancho Wong for sharing his karate knowledge & training. Credit also to all those karate students over the years that have helped developed his karate spirit. Sensei Patrick says his karate journey is still on track & as one ages with its body pains, it is still moving forward until the end of the line. As the saying goes "No pain no gain. Gambatte Kudasai! Sensei Patrick says his best karate moments was when Kancho Wong took many of the students to Okinawa to the Pre World Tournament in 1995. Just experiencing the culture & training at Kaicho Ikemiyagi's dojo was one of the best experiences that left an impression that will always be remembered. Concord branch classes are held every Saturdays 4-5:30pm. Please contact Sensei Patrick on 0419 230 774 for more details. Concord website- www.okinawankkconcorddojo.com.au

17.01.2022 CHI ISHI is a traditional Okinawa karate training tool used in order to develop hand, wrist, arm and shoulder strength. It consists of a wooden pole with a concrete weight at one end. The extension of the weight provides extra conditioning to hand and wrist strength. Used in Hojo undo (supplementary exercises) by some Karate styles, the Chi Ishi is used by gripping the wooden pole and swinging the concrete weight around or holding it stationary with the weighted end extended. Chi Ishi training is very similar to the kettlebell workouts & is used as part of training today in Wongsdojo karate. Contact us for more details of our karate & Kobudo training schedule.

17.01.2022 On behalf of Kancho Wong: VIC/NSW Students, please stay safe. Whilst your dojo may not be open, you can still find ways to train at home. 16.01.2022 TONFA (also spelled tongfa or tuifa) is a weapon historically practised by the upper classes in Okinawa who imported martial arts. Originated in either China or Southeast Asia, the tonfa traditionally made from red or white oak & used in pairs. The grip provides protection along one's forearms & also provides reinforcement for backfist, elbow strikes, & punches. The tonfa can swing out for a strike. Martial artists may also flip the tonfa & grab it by the shaft. This allows use of the handle as a hook in combat, similar to the kama (like a sickle - farming tool). Contact Wongsdojo Hombu for your next karate &/or kobudo classes.

14.01.2022 KOBUDO literally means ancient martial way, refers to the weapons art of the Okinawan people. During the time when Kobudo was first developed, the Japanese Satsuma Samurai had occupied Okinawa & established a ban on weapons and all martial arts practice. Today Traditional Okinawan weapons training includes the Bo, Sai, Tonfa and Nunchaku. Message us for more details of your next KOBUDO class.

13.01.2022 NUNCHAKU or the nunchucks is a traditional Okinawan martial arts weapon consisting of two sticks connected at one end by a short chain or rope. Commonly made out of wood, while the link is a cord or a metal chain. It was believed that the first emperor of the Chinese Sung dynasty, emperor Jiu (a great warrior) observed the villagers using a tool called flail to help harvest wheat & rice which was made out of two sticks of different length tied together with a rope made out of... rice hay & intertwined with horse hair. He borrowed a flail from a villager, came up with & developed specific techniques which his infantry later used during combat against the Mongolians (who he had lost to in the past). He used the flail weapon to successfully defeated them. Emperor Jiu developed 18 techniques & called the tool/weapon dai-so-dji translates to great cleaners. During the battle, the flail broke in half & based on that, he later invented a new combination of movements handling a shorter flail. The technique was called stuso- dji (little cleaners). According to Chinese legends, the techniques developed are identical with the current uses of the nunchaku today. The nunchaku wasn't a very popular weapon. The lack of popularity due to its low effectiveness when used against the staff or other long-reach weapons, not to mention the sword. However, one who is skilled in nunchaku usage can easily defeat opponents armed with knives or other weapons. The nunchaku was also an easy to conceal weapon, suitable for carrying everyday. So, in Okinawa, the nunchaku was mainly used as a tool for street self-defense against hooligans & robbers. Learn KOBUDO at Wongsdojo Hombu. Please contact us for more details.

12.01.2022 Knowing the history of your karate style is very important for all karateka. Every training experience are most memorable especially when you go to Okinawa.

09.01.2022 SAI is a traditional weapon used in Okinawa karate. The weapon is a sharp metal prong with two curved side prongs (yoku) projecting from the handle (tsuka). There are many different types of sai with varying prongs for trapping & blocking. Used as pairs, the movement includes a variety of blocks, parries, strikes, captures against attackers from all directions & height levels. Primarily used as a striking weapon for short jabs but it also has many defensive techniques. Using the point, knuckle & central bar as well as rapid grip changes for multiple strikes & blocks. It is possible that the Sai originated in India & spread along with Hinduism & Buddism. In Okinawa, the Sai was used by domestic police to arrest criminals & crowd control. Please message us for more details of karate & kobudo classes.

07.01.2022 Wongsdojo Karate Australia was in Okinawan newspaper on Sunday. Article on left side with picture of students in the dojo.

06.01.2022 The BO (STAFF) is a traditional Okinawan martial arts weapons. A long wooden weapon traditionally made of oak. The Bo is used to block, thrust & strike an opponent. It is an effective weapon to use to defend against other martial arts weapon. A BO can be used to block an opponents attack with the top part & then in a flow motion to counter strike with the lower end. With only a split second between blocking and striking. For this reason, the Bo is one of the most difficult of martial arts weapons to defend against. For more details about Wongsdojo Kobudo classes, please contact Kancho Johanes Wong 0418 466 567.

05.01.2022 Meet our WAHGUNYAH (VIC) Branch instructor: SENSEI TONY HENNESSY started training Karate in late 2005 with Wongsdojo (Mei Bu Kan) Karate and later in Kobudo in 2007. Sensei Tony found out about karate by buying pottery from Sensei Dave Edwards who was at the time was training under Kancho Johanes Wong. He saw the sign on his gate, made an enquiry and the rest was history. Sensei Tony became a branch instructor in 2015 with 2 students training in his shed at home. The class ...grew to about 15 students and so the class had to be moved to a bigger dojo which was at the wahgunyah hall. This is where classes are held till today. Sensei Tony is 3rd Dan black belt in Karate & 2nd Dan black belt in Kobudo. Sensei Tony said that his best karate & kobudo moment was getting his 1st Dan black belt. Persistence in training is the key regardless of your circumstance. It is achievable and most possible when you dedicate the time. He said I teach because I like to see the kids growing in confidence in themselves. If I wasn't teaching I dont think I would still be training myself. I teach 2 class, kids class and the other adults class. Sadly, at the moment because of covid we are only down to 6 students. For more details, please contact Sensei Tony for Wahgunyah branch classes on 0457332812. (Please note training times may change temporary during the Covid-19 period) Wahgunyah branch is on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/GojuRyuChilternValley/

04.01.2022 NIGIRI GAMÊ (or Gripping Jars) are traditional strength training tool used in karate to develop hand, arm, shoulder and leg. Used in Hojo undo (supplementary exercises), the Nigiri Gamê are large heavy ceramic jars that martial arts students must lift. Students must grip the jar by the rim with their fingers and either do stationary exercises with the jar or move with the jar. These jars often hold different levels of sand in order to vary the weight of the jar. Nigiri Gamê are similar to a modern kettlebell gym equipment but harder to hold making it an extra training for a students hand strength. Message for karate & kobudo training times.

03.01.2022 No matter what level you are currently at, always practise your basic techniques and when you’re done, practise it some more. All great Katas or Kumite are as a result from how well you have understood the basic techniques.

02.01.2022 Meet our BEVERLY HILLS(NSW) Branch Instructor: SENSEI ALEX GLA started learning karate (Go Ju Kai) in 1988 under Con Hardas while still in high school & progressing over the years to provisional black. It was while working in IT support (his first Job) back in 1996 & chatting to a customer (Iwan - Wongsdojo student), Sensei Alex got to talking about martial arts & a traditional Okinawan style of Karate called Meibukan. Intrigued in what traditional karate meant Sensei Alex w...as introduced to Kancho Johanes Wong. He started training, loved it so much & he was hooked. Sensei Alex could not get enough of it, training karate as much as he could. He also took up swimming & Wing Chung Kung Fu under Jim Fung in Chinatown for 12 months. Sensei Alex is always driven to never limit himself to a single train of thought as he says that there is always another application for a technique. However, life quickly progressed too. Sensei Alex moved overseas & then later interstate for a few years. After a short pause, Sensei Alex resumed training again at Wongsdojo karate in 2004 when he got back. He worked hard & over the years progressed to a black belt. Sensei Alex became a branch instructor in 2013 taking over the torch from then Daceyville branch instructor Desmond & by 2015 he moved the class closer to home at Bevery Hills. Class is growing stronger with 12 kids & young adults. During that time, Sensei Alex also studies Kobudo Kobukai (Okinawan weaponry) at Wongsdojo Hombu. With a strong karate background, he has progressed to 5th Dan Black Belt with hopes of starting a Kobudo class in the near future. Passing on knowledge & training others is by far Sensei Alexs greatest driver. "You don't really know what you know until you have to teach kids". When it comes to teachers, Sensei Alex have a great role model & mentor in Kancho Johanes Wong. He says that Kancho Wong always has the time to explain martial arts to him & his students. There is always another way to solve a problem & when in doubt train it out. Sensei Alex is 2nd Dan Black Belt in Karate & 5th Dan Black Belt in Kobudo. He said that his greatest moments are the trips to Okinawa where the Wongs dojo group travel like a family & live like locals. Participating in Okinawan karate & Kobudo seminars, tournaments & of course training. Long hard training session with our Karate Kaicho Masaaki Ikemiyagi and Kobudo Kaicho Takashi Kinjo. 01.01.2022 KARATE BRINGS NO LIMITS...the only limit is always your fear & the doubt that you cant achieve it. Cut down your limitation & always give it everything every time you step foot in the dojo.

01.01.2022 Its your turn to get fitter....dont disappoint the harshest critic that sees you everyday in the mirror

01.01.2022 Meet TOONGABBIE (NSW) Kids Karate instructor: SENSEI FEN INGERSOLE started training martial arts at the age of 11. With 38yrs experience in multiple martial arts discipline, there’s 3 generations of martial artists running in the family with her dad (Kancho Johanes Wong) as the head instructor of Wongsdojo Hombu Australia & her kids practicing karate also from a young age. Sensei Fen has attained 5th Dan in Mei Bu Kan Go Ju Ryu Karate. 1st Dan in Karate Naha-Te, 1st Dan in Ko...budo Koburyu, 1st Dan in Hap Ki Do & Provisional Black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Sensei Fen’s started training when she joined her dad to a Tae Kwon Do & Hap Ki Do class. Shortly after that her dad opened a Karate Naha-Te school and by this stage Sensei Fen was training 3hrs twice a week & early Sunday Hap Ki Do private lessons. In the early 1980’s, Fen’s dad went to Okinawa & studied under Kaicho Ikemiagi. Wongsdojo Hombu adopted the Mei Bu Kan Go Ju Ryu style & this became Sensei Fen’s 2nd style of karate learnt. From 2000, Sensei Fen expanded her fitness journey by attending various classes at the gym, took up boxing & attained her fitness certificate. Besides the kids karate class, she also teaches boxing fitness classes at the Hombu dojo. Sensei Fen says that her best karate moments was when she was awarded McDonald’s Junior Sports Star of the week back in 1987 & was featured on the front page of a local newspaper. The other great moments was participating with 3973 karatekas in Guinness World Record event in Okinawa Japan for ‘Most people performing a Kata’ in 2016. Sensei Fen graduated from a teaching degree but over the years life took her to many other career path until in Feb 2019 when she took over the Toongabbie branch kids karate class. Sensei Fen says it’s funny how life can bring you to a full circle, regardless of the diversion, the universe will take you to where you’re meant to be. They say that teaching kids takes a lot of patience. I believe it’s more than that as you really have to know them & the styles they learn things before you can successfully teach them. You have to be super creative when you are explaining something to them. Make it fun, make it real so that they remember without sacrificing the discipline part of what you want to convey. What works in an adult class, often don’t in a kids class, so the way you teach has to be in line with how that individual thinks & retains information. Once you identify this, you will win them every time & their progress is a lot faster & smoother. Kids karate class is currently on every Mondays & Tuesdays with an additional Thursdays classes from 2021. Wongsdojo Kids Karate class is an Active Kids approved provider. Please contact Sensei Fen for more details.
