24.01.2022 Dear friends, this year is very different from any others. This is the first time the band has been unable to put on it's annual concert since the 80s. The band has been a big part of our community since 1910, band rehearsal is something that keeps members together and performing for our community is something we all very much look forward too. Every night this week from 6pm we will be putting up a 'virtual concert' just a 5-10 minute snippet, something short we hope everyone... can enjoy. To start the concert we have a very special message from our President, followed by a performance from the our bands centenary concert. We would like to thank Jordan Crugnale MP and Bass Coast Shire Council for the community grants that are helping during this time. If you would like to donate to help the band continue providing access to music and music tuition for the community please use the paypal link below https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr http://www.wonthaggiband.org.au/ Alicia Cruickshank Eric Cross #wonthaggi #Brassband https://youtu.be/ekfHfTPlgvI

21.01.2022 A new series from here at the VBL, #FlashbackFriday! Now I can't guarantee that all these things happened on Fridays past, but here we will highlight some of th...e curiosities of banding. I may have posted this photo previously but first up is this photo of the Wonthaggi State School Band right after they won the Victorian School Band Contest at the Exhibition Buildings in August, 1930. The photo comes from an album of photocopied clippings held at the VBL Archive. State school bands started in big numbers around the 1930s thanks to money from the Gillies bequest. Curiously, most school bands included all boys, but notice the little girl holding a small trombone? Someone must know about this. At this contest in 1930 the Wonthaggi School Band was conducted by the famous W. Philpott and the contest was adjudicated by Mr. Harry Shugg, conductor of the Malvern Tramways Band. I've also linked in an article from Trove about the contest in which Mr Shugg said some of the playing put adult bands to shame!
19.01.2022 ANZAC Day 2020 sure was different this morning with all of us needing to adhere to social distancing requirements. Although we were unable to attend the usual dawn service and ANZAC parades and services today, many of our members stood proudly and played the Last Post and Reveille along with a minutes silence from their driveways and homes throughout the region. Did you here any of us playing at 6am this morning? Here is the small service that our Musical Director, Craig Marinus and his wife Susan held at the front of their home in Wonthaggi this morning. Stay safe and well. 'Lest We Forget'
18.01.2022 Hi all, for anyone that shops at Richie's they have changed their community benefits to an online system. If you previously had the Wonthaggi Citizens Band as your community club to support (or would like to nominate us now going forward) the new Richie's sign up is on https://ritchies.com.au/loyalty Community rewards are a small steady trickle of income for community clubs like ours. This change will hopefully make it easier for more casual shoppers to sign up, nominate a co...mmunity group and instantly have access to the app on their phone to scan in store. Thanks to all those who have us nominated as their community club.
18.01.2022 Come on down to Inverloch this morning where we will be marching in the parade at 10am as part of the Inverloch Jazz Festival. Straight after the parade we will perform in the main street for about an hour. Come and enjoy the weekend with lots of music. See you there!
15.01.2022 Instrument Return Amnesty. The band has been conducting an instrument stocktake and we have some that are unaccounted for. Perhaps someone started playing then stopped and never got around to returning the instrument. Someone moved and left an instrument at home.... We're asking anyone that may have had a Wonthaggi Citizens Band instrument in the past to check their cupboards, under their beds, in the ceiling, out in the shed to see if it may still be there. If so please let me know and we can arrange a way to return. For anyone who manages to locate and return an instrument before Anzac Day 25th April 2020, you will go into a draw to have a chance to win a google nest mini. Please share this post if you know people who have been involved in the WCB *current band members please don't try to hand back the instruments you are playing just to go into the draw, it won't work. -Sonny
11.01.2022 Looking for something musical to pass the time? Friend of the band Tom Green runs a music school here in Wonthaggi called Green Room Concept Studios. They have had to transition their entire studio online during this virus. From Tom... "At GRCS we are taking a positive and optimistic approach through all of this. We are in a very lucky and privileged position that we are able to deliver a service to a community that really needs a distraction and a bit of normality right now. One thing that is very clear to us is that people need music. We have all seen the power of music and how it can work to bring people together and suddenly change the mood of one person all the way through to a crowd of hundreds" If you or someone else is looking for some music tuition and want to support locals please visit. https://www.facebook.com/GreenRoomCS
11.01.2022 Your band wishes you all a happy and safe new year. We hope to see you at the bass coast show soon. We will be providing music from around 10am.

01.01.2022 Dear friends, tonight's video is a special one. It features some of our very new learners. This family decided the start of 2020 would be a great time to learn to play a brass instrument. Your band provides an instrument and tuition for anyone wanting to learn. This year we have done something we have never had to do before - offer video lessons for most of the year. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for our young ones (and the few older ones) to be learning a brass ...instrument (what is usually a very social activity), from the other side of a computer screen. If you would like to donate to help the band continue providing access to music and music tuition for the community please use the paypal link below https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr http://www.wonthaggiband.org.au/ https://youtu.be/VKQfT30uyVw
