24.01.2022 Wonthaggi owes its existence to the State Coal Mine which opened in November 1909 on the Powlett River Coalfields; a tent town soon sprung up, housing over 2,0...00 people. The railway line was built by February 1910; land was set aside for a permanent town and the first 100 houses were built by June 1910. In a few years Wonthaggi was a thriving town with many facilities. The State Coal mine closed in 1968. See more

22.01.2022 ON THIS DAY: 40th Anniversary since the withdrawal of passenger rail services to Wonthaggi (Sun. 04/12/1977) Image Caption: Victorian Railways Railmotor 34RM... is pictured crossing the Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge at Kilcunda for the second last time with the down ARE Stony Point, Phillip Island and Wonthaggi Tour Train. This was the last official passenger train to Wonthaggi. This image is available to view in full in the Geoff Cargeeg Collection on Flickr along with others taken 40 years ago to this day. Image Source: https://www.flickr.com/photos/gcargeeg/34478318190/ Link to images of this train can be accessed here: https://www.flickr.com/search/ Rather sadly, it was on this day 40 years ago that the last ever passenger rail service operated to Wonthaggi. Victorian Railways Railmotor 34RM had the honour of being the train to run the last service, which was an ARE Stony Point, Phillip Island and Wonthaggi Tour Train with T335 running the connecting tour train across Westernport Bay to Stony Point and return. The Flickr Collection and account dedicated to the late Geoff Cargeeg has several images of 34RM at numerous locations along the line with Wonthaggi railway station, the Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge and Nyora railway station prominent. The withdrawal was instigated by the Rupert Hamer led Liberal Victorian state government and occurred just prior to the release of the controversial 1979/1981 Lone Report investigating Victorias freight and passenger transport network and system. Although the Wonthaggi line was closed on Tuesday the 21st of November 1978, this was undoubtedly a precursor to what would happen in a few years time with many railway lines across the state under threat of closure and withdrawals throughout the 1980s. The neighbouring South Gippsland mainline to Leongatha and Yarram, where the Wonthaggi branch line spurred off at Nyora railway station was one of those that fall victim in 1981, however, at least survived until the mid-1990s.

10.01.2022 I am writing to see if anybody may have any information about my mother. Her name was Joan Hylton. Her mother was Lilly Hylton and her father was Cyril Hylton w...ho died in the mine (and is buried in Wonthaggi cemetry) in about 1929. He had been a POW in WWI. Mum was only 5 at the time but when she was older she was a nurse at the Wonthaggi Hospital (I am assuming this would have been around the 1940's. Later Nan and mum went up to Broken Hill where her brothers lived. Being too young to realise I did not get to ask mum about what happened between the time she was 5 until she was about 23/24 (would have been about 1945/6). I do know of a family called Little - I think there was a Frank Little and a dear girl called Valerie, who suffered from polio used to come and visit us in Broken Hill when I was a little boy. Mum also had a sister called Mary who became a teacher and taught at Charlton Sth and later at Trentham and lived in Daylesford before going to teach in Melbourne. I guess what I am asking is if anybody has any knowledge of them in the years mum was growing up or if there was any reason for them to leave Wonthaggi to go to Broken Hill. Thank you in advance for any information. See more

08.01.2022 Just wondering if there is a color version of this map? We want to explore with family and friends and a color version would be great. Even if i could download one.

07.01.2022 Can you help me please? Where can I search for information about my Grandfather, Melville James (Jim) Jupp, who apparently lost his eye in an accident in the Coal Mine. Looking at electoral rolls, I presume it happened between 1936-1949. Thank you

02.01.2022 The ABC television show Australian Story featured a fascinating program about the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1919 on June 1, 2020. The segment features an interview with Gwladys McLachlan, the daughter of former Wonthaggi nurse Elizabeth Beard. Gwladys tells how people died all over the town. The segment includes a recording of Ms Beard from 1988, in which she tells how nurses slept in a tent and treated up to 41 patients at a time in the Wonthaggi Town Hall. Ms Beard was in the hall for 3 months. See the interview at the 28:55 minute mark: https://youtu.be/UDY5COg2P2c

01.01.2022 THE SEVEN HISTORICAL WONDERS OF BASS COAST FOR HISTORY MONTH In these strange times, we hope everyone is managing and staying safe. October normally sees us offering a range of activities for History Month but the COVID situation means many things have to be done differently. Wonthaggi & District Historical Society is participating in a History Month initiative exploring the Seven Historical Wonders of Gippsland. ... Public polls will identify and vote upon the Historical Wonders of the Bass Coast Shire along with other posts. Voting from 1-23 October will nominate the final seven sites for each of the regions. This will be followed by a Gippsland-wide poll during the final week of October to select Seven Historical Wonders for Gippsland. We are calling for nominations for sites of historical significance within the Bass Coast Shire to be included in the initial list. To get the discussion going, we have come up with a few possible sites: - Eastern Area & coal mining in Wonthaggi - Churchill Island - Settlement Point, Corinella - Inverloch Rocket Shed - Kilcunda Trestle Bridge and rail trail - Dinosaur fossil sites at Flat Rocks, Inverloch - Wonthaggi Rail Station Precinct - Wonthaggi Hotel including the iconic whalebone facade We are looking for more, so the question is: Which Bass Coast site do you think is an important heritage asset, worthy of recognition? Please post your nominations via a comment or feel free to DM us. Each nominated site will require a photo or photos and a brief description so if you have time please include any contextual information along with your nomination.
