25.01.2022 This is the new ANZAC Day photo to go up as a poster round Wonthaggi. Other photo not suitable for printing formats.

25.01.2022 The Friends of the Wonthaggi Cemetery have now identified 450 vererans including 11 pows buried in the Wonthaggi Cemetery, about 40%in unmarked graves. The CofE section is yet to be completed. We have unsuccessfully applied for grants go build a memorial to these veterans which will identify the location of the graves of these veterans. Other than being patteed on the head bg Bass Shire and State Government in the form of platitudes, they are not willing to provide funds, lots of suggestions buts thats all. Seems a couple of councillers think this a community grants project only, nothing special. Already applied with no success. We plan to go to the people as a last resort Secretary

24.01.2022 Wonthaggi RSL has just received a Victorian Government Commemorative grant for$5000 to enable the sub branch to write a web page to list all veterans from the Bass Coast region on virtual honour. This will allow people to search for veterans by name and township and view all honour boards and memorials located in the Bass Coast Shire. The RSL has been researching and collecting names for the past 18 months but need have the internal skills to write the web site.

23.01.2022 RSL sub branch researchers continue with the survey for Veterans buried at the WonthaggI Cemetery. Some 540 veteran burials have so far been identified covering the Boer War to Vietnam. These burials include 15 veterans who wer prisoners of war. There is even an American Civil war veteran buried in this Cemetery. Some 40% of the graves are unmarked and many need much maintenance, including Commonwealth War Graves. It is with grave concern that the Wonthaggi Cemetery Trust pre...vented the marking of unmarked graves with a timber cross. Apparently the cross design did not meet their standards, but they are yet to identify to us, just what is their acceptable standard as a common grave marker. This situation has been identified with RSL Vic who have expressed some concern. The RSL sub branch now holds the veteran interment gathered to date, images of the plot, the Records of the WW1veterans, and service certificates for WW2 veterans. WW2 service records are only available for those veterans who have been deceased for 30 years. You can view what we have on Tuesdays once the sub branch re- opens after the conclusion of the COVID19 pandemic. Not we don not have facilities to provide copies and records cannot be removed for any reason. The Secretary See more

22.01.2022 It has been a while. We have received a grant from the State Government which will allow us to proceed to the next stage to writ the web site for the Bass Coast Virtual honour board. When this is complete you will be able to search for veterans from Bass on line. We need photographs and stories of veterans to add to the web site.

18.01.2022 Friends of the Wonthaggi Cemetery have now identified some 220 veterans buried there. This includes 9 men who were prisoners of war, one veteran who was captured by the Germans in World War 1. Many of these veterans are buried in in marked graves. On ANZAC DAY 2017 these veterans were commemorated by 200 white crosses adorned with poppies being placed at the entrance of the Cemetery. Photos later. Great work Renee and Vern

15.01.2022 The sub branch has just concluded a project to identify all of the World War One Veterans who lived the Bass Coast Shire and served in that conflict. The project has identified some 1015 names including 4 nurses. The names and some details are available on a data base held at the Wonthaggi RSL. The information also identifies those local Honour Board(s) on they are listed. The project is now being extended to World War 2 and the DVA Historical Section have provided us with 2...000 names from their records, based on the 49 place names in Bass Shire provided to them from this sub branch. A grant application has been made to enable all of this detail to be placed on a searchable web site. Separate suplimentary lists have been created to identify those who died on service, if they were the first ANZACS, if they were local miners, those who do not appear on any local Honour Board and a list of those who recieved Gallantry Awards. 07.01.2022 COVID19 means that we cannot conduct ANZAC Day services this year in accordance with the agreement between RSL Vic and the State Government. But 2 veteran service members will hold a lone vigil at the Wonthaggi Cenotaph at 6:00am with a flags set, the reading of the "Ode", the "Last Post" and laying of wreaths. We would encourage you to "stand to" at 6:00am on the day in your driveways or outside your house as mark of support for our ANZACS past and present. I also encourage ...people to sit lay wreaths or floral tributes at the Wonthaggi Cenotaph either the day before or on the day, but please in your own time and observe social distancing. ANZAC tokens cannot sold this year but I encourage you to support the ANZAC Day Appeal with a donation made, either on line at www.anzacappeal.com.au at Coles or Woolworths Supermarkets, or by mail to Wonthaggi RSL, PO Box22, Wonthaggi 3995, or your local sub branch. See photo, I hope. See more
