25.01.2022 Fantastic news regarding our San Remo Campus!

25.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE @ WONTHAGGI SC (Term 2 #1 April 6 2020) We do hope all in our school community are well and adapting to our changed lifestyles in these particularly challenging times. While we are officially on the term break, it is completely understandable that our College community will have questions about how teaching and learning will occur in Term 2 and beyond. It is our understanding that there will be official information distributed from the Department of Educati...on in the next few days, particularly with regards to the strategies to support VCE students. We anticipate being able to provide a further update this Thursday (April 9) and then upon our return next week (Tuesday April 14). At the same time we wanted to provide you with some of the information that we do have. In the four pupil free days at the end of Term 1, and in the weeks beforehand, teachers devoted their energies to ensuring that genuine learning could occur via online platforms. The Compass Management System will be central to this for all involved. Regardless of the timeline for recovery we are faced with, there will be appropriate curriculum and tasks provided for all students to support learning. Assessment of tasks will continue. Our staff encourage contact from students, and they also will contact students on a regular basis. The nature and style of how each class will be conducted is influenced significantly by individual staff. However, early in Term 2, parents, carers and students, will receive a learning overview for each class explaining their program and the support available. Once again, we will distribute more detail as it becomes available. At home there are a number of things you can do to support students learning: Be aware of their requirements in each subject. Encourage, support, and discuss ideas! Make sure you have access to COMPASS. This will be essential! Please contact the Office early next term if you need any assistance with passwords. It will be the key forum for news items and learning materials. Never hesitate to contact us! Ring our Office numbers (Dudley 5672 0900 and McKenzie 5611 4000) or email the College at [email protected] . Contact staff directly via COMPASS. Follow us on Facebook for important information BUT please direct any questions you have for us via the Office or email options to ensure it is directed to the appropriate person and followed up. If internet or computer access is an issue, then please let us know. We do have strategies in place to make sure all students have access to their program. The situation is demanding and challenging but our College community is a proud one with a strong history of working together. This is so important in the current climate. Our students are impressive, our staff is extremely dedicated and the support of our community is really valued. Take care!

24.01.2022 CELEBRATING THE YEAR 12 CLASS OF 2020 They have had a particularly challenging year, but our Year 12 students have done an amazing job. While they have now commenced exams, last week we were able to acknowledge their success with a unique graduation ceremony in our senior campus gymnasium. Congratulations to the home groups, student leaders and award winners celebrated on the day ( Honours, Effort, Subject and Outreach achievements were all acknowledged). We are very proud of you!

24.01.2022 Please note the new phone number for our McKenzie Campus is 03 5611 4000. The Dudley Campus phone number is unchanged (03 5672 0900). Thank you to everybody for their patience during this time of transition. #wscproudhistoryexcitingfuture

24.01.2022 Hi WSC Community, Hope you are all taking care of yourselves. Just a quick message to say that we all miss our students, especially the smiles and energy they bring to our school. Here are some photos of some Year 8 students in Mr. Ferteis class who made edible models of animal and plant cells (although I think they enjoyed the eating more than the making!!) prior to this remote learning period. I hope these make you smile. Take care!

21.01.2022 The Wonthaggi Secondary College community was shocked and saddened to learn our Business Manager Steve Plumb has passed away. For 20 years Steve and his family have been an integral part of our community and we wish to extend our heartfelt sympathies to Terra, Zoe, Emma, Josh, Sadie, Sandra and the extended family. Steves integrity and commitment to social equity were absolute. He worked tirelessly in supporting all staff, students and their families to ensure our young people had access to quality education. Highly regarded for his professionalism and financial expertise, at a recent retirement function Steves pivotal role in the realisation of the new McKenzie Campus was celebrated. The WSC Community has indeed benefited from Steves service to education and will miss him very much. Post from the Plumb Family:

13.01.2022 Sadly, due to COVID-19, there will be no Talented Students Concert this year. An online event was considered, but we decided that students and staff need to focus on the return to on-site learning. We do have good news though. We are excited to announce that WSC will be putting on a musical production of Honk! in 2021. More information will follow later in the year. After the success of Camp Rock in 2019, it will be great to see WSC students return to the stage.

11.01.2022 EARLY OFFICE CLOSURE - Friday 2pm Please note that we will be closing the General Office at 2pm this Friday (July 17, 2020). We apologise for the reduced service but this is necessary to enable staff to access the funeral service for our valued colleague, Steve Plumb. Afternoon classes will be running on the day. Normal Office hours resume at 8am on Monday July 20. Thank you for your understanding and support.

11.01.2022 Today, Wonthaggi Secondary College’s very own Masked Guitar Ensemble had their first rehearsal back at school. These dedicated students rehearse from 7.30 am, every Thursday morning. At the moment, our guitar students are carrying the flame for music ensembles as our concert bands and choir pause due to COVID-19 restrictions. We look forward to hearing these talented guitarists perform soon.

11.01.2022 UPDATE RE CORONAVIRUS EARLY COMMENCEMENT OF TERM BREAK March 22, 2020 (5.30pm) The Premier of Victoria has indicated that school holidays will be brought forward to commence Tuesday March 24 2020. We will continue to update our community as further information becomes available. However, there are some key points we wanted to ensure you were aware of as soon as possible: All students who are well should attend on Monday March 23:... * students should collect all books and materials to prepare for at-home learning (ensure you bring an extra bag if you need it) * knowing login passwords for COMPASS and other platforms will be essential All parents and carers will need to ensure that they have their COMPASS login details. If you do not have these, please contact the General Office to coordinate (Dudley 5672 0900 and McKenzie 5611 4000). Should the closure continue into Term 2, our teaching and learning will resume. Staff have worked impressively to prepare for the possibility of at home learning occurring. Staff will be in contact through online platforms, with work being reviewed regularly and assessment continuing should this eventuate. Follow us on COMPASS news feeds, social media, check emails and SMS messages. These have become our key communication strategies and you are encouraged to check on these regularly. Ensure that we have your up to date mobile phone number and email address. Take care and practise appropriate safety measures. This is a most challenging time. We want all in our community to stay well. Please respect government and medical guidelines regarding hygiene and social distancing. We have a proud history of working together and never will it be more important. We are all in this together! If your child is unable to attend tomorrow, then books can be collected from lockers between 4pm and 6pm Monday March 23, 2020 (we do anticipate having difficulty in accommodating this earlier in the day). We are sure that there are many questions that community members have and we will continue to update you as more detail comes to hand. Our communitys support is particularly valued during this challenging time which is affecting all students from across the state. Please take care! WSC Leadership Team

07.01.2022 Wellbeing Focus: The Impact of Stress and the Importance of Help-Seeking At the moment there is a lot of uncertainty and change. For some, home has provided a time to concentrate on family. For many, this pandemic has brought increased stress, anxiety and has challenged our mental health. It is expected that your child may be feeling mixed emotions right now including anger and frustration.... Your child may need reminding that they are not alone and that it is alright to reach out for help and support. Encourage them to talk to someone if they need to or if they are worried about someone. This could be a friend, family member, a Teacher, Year Level Coordinator or a member from the Wellbeing Team. Other options for support may include: Headspace (Wonthaggi)- appointments via phone, online or screen-to-screen Ph: 5671 5900 Kids Helpline- 1800 55 1800 or kidshelpline.com.au eHeadspace- by visiting headspace.com.au Some days are easier than others. Each day we need to continue to put one foot in front of the other. We can get through this together. Resources: COVID 19 Coping with Stress Fact Sheet Headspace Wonthaggi Notice for Schools

01.01.2022 Remote learning is now well underway and overall it has started very positively. Thank you to all our families for their support as we work together in this very different learning environment. Please find here the first of our posts aimed at supporting the wellbeing of our young people. WELLBEING FOCUS- Supporting a Routine It is important to check in with your child to ensure that they have managed to organise themselves effectively and are ready for week 2. We know that h...ome is not school. We suggest that you consider the following to develop your childs ability to become an effective learner: - Ensure that your child has their books on-hand as well as stationery requirements. - Ensure that they remember to charge their electronic device each evening. - Discuss the development of a plan for each day (suggestion in attached photo and also sent via Compass). Consider supporting their development of a daily goal and reflect on their achievements each day. Try to keep this as a positive discussion where possible. - Ensure that your child is allocating time to become active and get some fresh air. This remote approach is different, but we can do this. If challenges arise, it is essential that you and your child reach out and ask for help. Please do not hesitate to contact McKenzie Campus on 5611 4000 or use Compass to email the relevant teacher, Year Level Coordinators, Principals or the Wellbeing Team (Emily OBrien, Carol Davidson and Jo Beasley). Together we will work to support you in any way that we can during this challenging time. See more

01.01.2022 We hope that all in our College community are well. Please find here this weeks Wellbeing post. Take care! WELLBEING FOCUS- CYBERSAFETY As we make efforts to stay connected with our learning and communicate with friends and family it is important that your child is using the internet safely. There are risks. It is worthwhile to remind your child that: - It is essential that everyone is respectful with each other. It is not uncommon for miscommunication to occur via social me...dia. It is not the same as a conversation face-to-face. It is better to walk away than to engage in a digital argument. You do not need to respond to anything immediately when you are feeling emotional. You are not obligated to respond at all. Look after you! - Have regular breaks from the screen and make an effort to positively frame any comments. - Always safeguard personal information and only engage online with people that you know. Use your privacy settings so that your online identity is not public. - Always screen who you accept as friends online and be confident to block people if you are having a negative interaction online. - Be an up-stander, not a by-stander! If you are worried about somebody, speak up. Sometimes we all need support. If your child experiences something negative online? If your child experiences cyberbullying or are receiving online abuse it is important that you seek help and report this promptly. Encourage your child to take screen shots so that there is evidence collected. You can discuss these concerns with your Campus Principal or the Wellbeing Team (Emily OBrien, Carol Davidson or Jo Beasley). You can also contact the Police or report online via https://www.esafety.gov.au/report. At any time, your child can call Kids Helpline on Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800). If you or your child are at immediate risk of harm please contact the Police immediately via 000. 01.01.2022 WELLBEING FOCUS: Your Childs Feelings about Returning to School Our Year 11 and 12 students have been back to McKenzie Campus this week and have made a positive transition back to face-to-face learning. For the rest of our College, students will be returning on Tuesday, June the 9th. For many, a return brings a level of excitement to catch-up with friends and teachers. However, it is ok to be feeling a level of uncertainty and anxiety about this change. It has been a long b...reak and we understand that families have had varied experiences during the lockdown period and that at times the remote learning process has brought some challenges. It is important that we work together to re-establish a school routine again with your child. Please have a read of the article attached that suggests supports that you may be able to action on the home front. If you have concerns regarding your childs return please do not hesitate to contact Ross Bramley (Dudley Campus Principal), Marg ODonnell (McKenzie Campus Principal) or the Wellbeing Team (Emily OBrien and Jo Beasley- Dudley Campus, or Carol Davidson- McKenzie Campus).
