23.01.2022 The senior (and junior) sires at Woodbourn are rearing to go. All the Woodbourn cows are sorted, double checked and ready and we will be putting the bulls out at the end of the week. The line up of sires we are using this year is exceptional. Their EBV's are just what we having been looking for and the body type also just what we want here at Woodbourn. It thrills us to be using such a line up of sires and we look forward each year to seeing the results of all this planning a...nd expenditure. I am going to post photos of some of the sires and they will be in this order of photo ... Karl, Hugh, Pontiac, Napoleon (time we took another photo of him!), Quantum (at 14months). That will do for this post and if the rain has cleaned up Nougat a bit, I will show him next time. His figures are to die for. But...I cant finish without saying how glorious Tasmania is looking this spring and I will show you some photos from yesterday. (We wont mention that is is so wet, we cant get the crops in!) but it is so beautiful it takes my breath away. 22.01.2022 Well now, you should have had a good look at Napoleon on my last post (one minute ago). I thought the photo was not loading so I kept pressing the button! Next thing the post has gone through and there are a dozen photos of Napoleon all the same! Oh well he is a good looking fellow, so worse things could happen Woodbourn Murray Grey Sale Just to change the image a bit, here is spring in Tasmania, Cressy. Monday 3rd May 2021... 12 noon at Cressy, Northern Tasmania. See more

19.01.2022 Thought I would move away from our beautiful Woodbourn Murray Greys for this post and show you how very beautiful Tasmania is this spring. We visited the East Coast this weekend and it looked the best it has looked for years. It is usually dry but this year they have had an abundance of rain. The merinos which looked pretty sad last year are now looking good and all the vines are a vivid green and growing well. ... plenty of vineyards in this part of the world. I will also in...clude a lovely one of Woodbourn looking green and lush. Finally I would like to mention The Granary at Richmond Hill, Cressy Our niece Fiona and her husband Nick have accommodation on their beautiful property and I am sure when you see these two photos, you will agree it is gorgeous. The building itself is historic and unique, made of stone and bricks and surrounded by a stunning garden, not to mention how beautiful it is inside. See more

15.01.2022 A very very nice early evening with beautiful Woodbourn Murray Grey heifers and their young Woodbourn joining sire. This select group of young Woodbourn heifers is on agistment not far from Woodbourn and very lucky girls they are. The paddocks are lush with grass, the hawthorn hedges are flowering white and pink (did you know we have pink as well as white hawthorn) and the mountains are blue and handsome. It was a dead still evening and Charles called the girls over to him fo...r a nice close look. The young Woodbourn bull was hard to photograph... he was busy checking out his females and keeping them safe.... constantly on the move. While we were enjoying the view, we rang Sue Francis (Onward Murray Greys) to discuss the three cows and calves we bought from her recently. They will soon be here at Woodbourn and we are looking forward to seeing them. Woodbourn Murray Grey Sale Monday 3rd May, 2021 at 12 noon at Cressy, Northern Tasmania. See more

09.01.2022 As promised, I have a photo of Quantum, who arrived at Woodbourn on Tuesday. We are so pleased with him and he is now resting in the bull lane for three weeks before going out with Woodbourn heifers in the the third week of October. He is only fourteen months old and is very well grown. And... just to go on about his EBV's once more..... He ranges from +4.5 for birth, through +64 for 400 day, to +84 for 600 day, with +3.00 for EMA, positive rib and rump fats to a great +1.6 f...or IMF. 09.01.2022 What a wonderful outcome! At Woodbourn we have always held the 'G' females in very high regard and the 'K' ones as well. They are beautiful big roomy cows and have produced some excellent sale bulls over the years. This week I heard a ping on my phone and there was a photo of two very new calves (twins) with their 'G' mother. One looked a bit fresher than the other. Charles saw a fresh calf on the ground, then when he checked the back of the cow he saw two more feet, in breach position. Up to the yards they went and these photos show the very happy outcome. The photos are a few days old and the threesome is now out in the paddock happy as larry.

06.01.2022 When all the Woodbourn senior sires were taken away from their cows at the end of the spring joining period, they were each put into individual small paddocks with electric fences, down the bull lane. Napoleon was still fired up about leaving his girls and made his way through the electric fence into the next paddock to pick a fight with his neighbour. The bad news is he came out of it very much the worse off. His neighbour wacked him from behind and injured him badly. Two vi...siting agents a few weeks later saw his poor sore testicle, blown up to the size of a football. Many visits from the vet followed.... fluid was removed, injections and then a watch and wait game. We warned the insurance company there could be a claim. Obviously we didn't want to make a claim, we wanted and needed this very good bull to put with our Woodbourn females.. He is such an appealing bull with great length, stature and shape and he has figures to die for: +2.3 for birth, +62 for 600 day, +6 for milk and then an amazing +3.5 EMA, +0.8 rib, +1.2 rump and IMF of +0.1 But ... after a trial period with a small group of autumn calving cows and a successful semen test, he has been announced fit and healthy. A huge relief to us and I imagine a relief for the insurance company Here is a photo of Napoleon out in the paddock for the spring joining. The Woodbourn Sale is Monday, 3rd May at 12 noon, Cressy, Northern Tasmania. See more

04.01.2022 I thought I would show you a couple of photos of the 'Q' heifers we sorted the other day. As Charles said, it takes three years to produce these heifers ... from selecting the bull to join to the Woodbourn females, waiting for nine months, calving them down, weaning them and then waiting until this spring for sorting them into joining groups, sale heifers, keepers and a group for the open market. We were all looking forward to the day, especially as the heifers are looking ma...gnificent after such a great autumn and spring. We sorted them by eye first and then went through their Breedplan figures. The Woodbourn cattle accuracies are getting pretty high now, so many of the heifers had their carcase data up as well. In these two photos, you will see a fairly large notch out of the heifers' near ear ... that is taken for their Pestivirus test. We only sell cattle tested free for Pestivirus and we also vaccinate against it. Woodbourn Murray Grey Sale, Monday, 3rd May, 2021 at 12 noon at Cressy, Northern Tasmania See more

03.01.2022 Yesterday we weighed the young Woodbourn bulls for their 400 and 600 day weights. These are the young bulls from which we will select the sale team for the Woodbourn sale on Monday, 3rd May 2021, at Cressy, Northern Tasmania. They looked very very good and it is exciting to see their weights and compare their sires as they each come in to be weighed.

02.01.2022 What a day at Woodbourn this weekend! 150 to 200 people came to fish and many landed a big one. The Longford Fishing Club stock this Woodbourn dam each year with salmon and rainbow trout and the members come to fish regularly. This week they invited the Launceston Fishing Club to join them and with plenty of fish, large and small, there was a good chance of catching one. People started arriving at 9 o'clock and many did not leave until late in the afternoon. This dam was built at Woodbourn a number of years ago for irrigation. It enables a constant supply of water without fluctuations in availability from the irrigation channel during peak times. It was great to see so many people enjoying the day.

01.01.2022 Our new bull, Quantum, will be on the water very soon on his way to Tasmania and could arrive here at Woodbourn as soon as Monday. We have not seen him since June, when we chose him and we are very much looking forward to his arrival. I shall take some photos of him once he has settled in. As I said in an earlier post, he took our eye as soon as we walked towards the group of bulls on offer and when we saw his figures as well, we were very happy. Since then, Quantum has been ...scanned for and the September run of Breedplan, with his carcase figures, has just been put up. His EBV's are extraordinary. Birth +4.5, 400day +64, 600day +84, carcase +57, EMA +3.0, Rib +0.3, Rump+0.5, RBY +0.9, IMF +1.5 His indexes are $59, $71 $84 against breed average of $38, $39, $55. You can see why we are pleased to have this new young sire at Woodbourn. Woodbourn Murray Grey Sale, Monday 3rd May at 12noon, Cressy, Northern Tasmania. See more

01.01.2022 It seems the text did not go through with the video of Hugh having a good old scratch. He is the most active bull and kicks up his heels like a calf. I'll show you a still photo of him as well (he is very dirty!), so you can see his muscle definition...he never loses weight...not in the Jenny Craig paddock, not when he is joining the cows and not when the grass dries off. He is amazing. Just to show you another reason why we think so highly of him...his figures range from +4....5 for birth to +79 for growth, very positive fats including +1.7 for IMF. Woodbourn Murray Grey Sale, Auctions Plus, and on farm live auction. Monday 3rd May at 12 noon at Cressy, Northern Tasmania See more
