25.01.2022 Giving children the skills and opportunity to learn how to assess risk is an important part of the 'Woodbury Boston way' .
25.01.2022 The power of experience At Woodbury Boston, we believe in the power of experience to enhance explicit teaching. That's why we're so keen on inquiry-based learning. It gives teaching staff the leeway to program learning experiences based on the students' interests, which means that they're WAY more invested in the topics at hand.... Our kindy/pre-primary group, the Swans and Cygnets, are super keen on dinosaurs and bees. This group of feathered friends, with Rochanne and Heide’s guidance, have been exploring their favourite topics through inquiry this year. Check out our blog to see all that they learned https://www.woodburyboston.wa.edu.au//inquiry-based-learni #woodburyboston

24.01.2022 From little things, big things grow We welcomed our 2021 Kindergarten students for their Orientation Day in the first week of November. The children were entranced by all that the Early Childhood room has to offer the play cafe (complete with hand sanitiser!) was a busy place as our newest students made coffee, tea and pizzas for their parents.... The children also had the opportunity to do a water colour painting or threading as well as joining in with singing and listening to a story. It's all about giving our kindy kids a calm, friendly first experience of school. And we're here to help the parents, as well! We understand that starting school can be stressful for everyone, which is why we have an open door policy at Woodbury Boston. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to participate in class activities any day of the week. We loved being able to meet our 2021 kindy students and we can't wait to see them at school next year! 23.01.2022 Children learn best when they're happy. That's been our motto since day one. For over 40 years, we've been teaching happy kids on our beautiful campus. They've learnt a lot and so have we. Making students happy doesn't mean there are no rules. It simply means that, in everything we do, we focus on the whole child. ... Your child’s social-emotional development is key to their success in school and in life. That's why we work hard every day, supporting our students to work hard, stand up for what they believe in, resolve problems in a healthy way and care for the world around them. Our students become empathetic, confident, happy life-long learners. Which is kind of the whole point of school, isn't it? 22.01.2022 Dirty feet here's how bushwalks make our students smile At Woodbury Boston Primary School, our students learn the Western Australian Curriculum, but we do things a little bit differently. We appreciate the beauty and power of nature, so we give our students as many opportunities as possible to learn the things they need to learn outside. During terms two and three, our youngest students go on weekly bushwalks. This time outdoors isn’t just playtime, though. It aligns with ...our Science, Humanities, Maths, English and Health programs. Most importantly, it makes our students smile. Here are four great benefits of outdoor learning; Time in nature boosts confidence Time in nature boosts creativity Time in nature engages the senses Time in nature encourages wonder Want to know more? Head to our blog to read all about why we love bush walks. https://www.woodburyboston.wa.edu.au//how-bush-walks-make- Image Jenny Feast Photography #woodburyboston
20.01.2022 This morning, to celebrate the arrival of Spring and as part of the Noongar season Djilba, the students created greenery garlands, which many wore for the rest of the day. It was delightful to see our older students helping out the younger, and lots of fun was had. Image description: 1. an older child wearing a garland of greenery in her hair is helping place a similar garland on the head of a younger child. Other children and adults are busy in the background. 2. A timber wall with colourful school backpacks hanging on wooden pegs. Garlands with flowers and greenery are hanging on pegs above the bags.
19.01.2022 Meet Jule our Principal Jule's been working at Woodbury Boston for seven years, but she's been an educator for nearly 30. One of Jule's favourite things about Woodbury Boston is the time that our students of all ages spend learning and playing together. ... The students have a voice and they’re encouraged from a young age to be capable, independent problem solvers. They know that their words and ideas matter and that their choices can affect everyday life at school. The staff love Jule because she's supportive, creative and really cares about them. The students love Jule because she gives them a run for their money on the rope swings! Jule's laser focus on the school's ethos has allowed us to maintain its integrity over the years. She truly cares about Woodbury Boston's community and works hard to achieve the best possible educational outcomes for every student. To learn more about our staff, please visit our website.

17.01.2022 Here's what sets us apart from a mainstream school -Mixed age play: At Woodbury Boston, our students play in mixed age groups. This is particularly good for younger siblings, who love that they can play with their older brother or sister at school. Our students also love the relationships they form between age groups. Year 6 Carers are often called upon to help out when younger students need a helping hand. They model conflict resolution, and the whole experience allows chil...dren to learn that they have the tools to solve problems independently. -Child-centered programming: Our teachers and Education Assistants factor the students' interest in when planning classroom activities. -Adventures! Children are hard-wired adventurers. And we make the most of that at Woodbury Boston. Through our camps and Out & About programs, our kids connect the things they learn in the classroom with real life experiences. Even our playground is an adventure. With acres of bush to explore, there’s so much fun to be had at school. Visit our website or call 9845 1185 to book a tour! www.woodburyboston.wa.edu.au Image @jennyfeastphotography
17.01.2022 When we talk to our students about what they love most about our school, a very common answer is camps! From kindy onwards, our students mark time not only by moving into a new classroom, but by attending longer and more challenging camps. Starting with our very youngest students (and their parents), camps give our children the chance to experience adventure, consolidate relationships, build resilience, and learn new skills. Our latest blog walks you through the camps and ...adventures that are part of every child's school experience at Woodbury Boston. https://www.woodburyboston.wa.edu.au/wo/camps-and-adventure

17.01.2022 The importance of a nourishing lunch Dietician Kelly Flett (Elevate Sports Dietetics) has a lot to say about school lunches. But mostly she wants you to stress less about them. Here are some tips for packing a yummy lunch for your kids:... -Water, water, water! Avoid juice and soft drinks -You don’t need to include an entire day’s intake in your child’s school lunch box just think about what they'll need for lunch and snacks -Focus on packet-free snack foods: Hard boiled eggs, veggies, fruit, homemade muesli bars or crackers, roasted chickpeas or homemade muffins and biscuits are a great way to know exactly what’s in your child’s snacks -Veggies for the win: Carrot sticks, celery, capsicum or snow peas are tasty options for lunch boxes add some hummus for dipping and you’ve got a winning combination If you found this helpful, check out the whole post on our blog. 15.01.2022 Play-based, child-centred Early Childhood education is so important.
14.01.2022 Nature-based learning from K-6 In her book Children Learning Outside the Classroom, Sue Waite explores the whats and whys of nature-based learning all the way through primary school. Sue reckons what true nature-based learning demands is different ways of teaching. With this in place, outdoor learning can enrich all parts of the curriculum. At Woodbury Boston, the bush is a natural extension of the classroom. This means that outdoor learning is second nature for our teachers ...and our students. Here's what that looks like for kids of all ages: -Our youngest students identify a range of living and non-living things. They make observations about the traits of each item, where it can be found, and whether it is living or non-living. -Older students invent projects to solve everyday problems using items found in nature. The focus on sustainability develops creative problem solving while highlighting the need to consider the environment in everything we do. -When it comes to history and geography, the landscape gives us almost unlimited fodder for fascinating experiences. From Dreamtime stories and bush tucker to local plants, land forms and water conservation, being in the bush makes it real for our students. Keen to learn more? 14.01.2022 The best thing about Term Four is... ...everything! We're all looking forward to lots of sunny days this term. We've got a few Fridays of Out & About and some exciting end of year activities planned, not to mention all of the fun we have in the classroom every day.... Not only that, we've got Orientation Day a chance for all of our students to experience what school will be like for them in 2021. We'll welcome our brand new kindies, and students from each year group jump up a year for the day. Not only does this help out with any anxiety the students feel about next year, it's heaps of fun, too. And we've got just a few enrolment spaces available next year, so if you've been sitting on the fence, hop to it! 14.01.2022 Cubbies are important, and part of our school grounds. "A cubby is an intimate space that’s yours. A space your stories, and your half stories, can occupy."
14.01.2022 Three cheers for 40 years! We are so excited to be celebrating our 40th anniversary in 2020. John and Forrest Woodbury started Woodbury Boston Primary School in 1980. Their goal was to create an environment where the children were treated as individuals, where their varying educational needs and interests were met, and where they were treated with kindness and respect.... That ethos is the same today. Keep your eyes peeled in 2021 we've delayed our 40th birthday celebrations until then (thank you, Covid-19). We can't wait to celebrate with our school community! 12.01.2022 Some excellent tips from Maggie Dent about starting at a new school-for little, and not-so-little, students. Our school still has a couple of places available for next year, in kindy and other years. A Kindy orientation session will be held early in the term, with a transition day for other years to come towards the end of the year. Contact the school next term to find out more.

12.01.2022 But what about technology? The fact that we're all about nature-based learning doesn't mean our students miss out in the IT department. The WA curriculum focuses on a few things when it comes to technology. These are:... -Safe and ethical practices -Managing and operating technology -Communicating, investigating and creating using technology Apart from learning about being safe online and learning how to use computers and tablets, our students use IT to enhance their nature-based learning experiences. In fact, Woodbury Boston students use a whole range of devices to take photos, record audio and vision, use QR codes to access information on the web, and edit their own videos. All of these skills build the creativity and independent problem solving that we love to see at school. If you'd like to learn more, visit our website! Image Jenny Feast Photography #woodburyboston
10.01.2022 Have you ever observed a child who is deeply engaged in an activity? Furrowed brow. Laser focus. Tongue poking out. Most often, we see this level of concentration when children use their fine motor skills.... For little ones, this includes tricky things like picking up small items or doing up a button. For bigger kids it can be writing, untying a knot or making a flower crown. If your child is having a hard time with their fine motor skills, there are lots of activities that can help. Here are a few: Playdough or clay: squeezing, pinching, poking and rolling can all strengthen little hands Planting or gardening: digging holes, handling tiny seeds and being gentle with seedlings help develop control Water play: cups, food colouring and a set of eye droppers are an irresistible way to develop fine motor skills Save this post for when you need some summertime activity ideas! 10.01.2022 Learning and growing on Noongar boodja We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we learn and grow, the Minang people of the Noongar nation. 08.01.2022 At Woodbury Boston, using the students’ interests to inform our lesson planning is part of every single day. It makes sense: our children have varied interests, so why not tap into them? It makes our students excited about learning, and children of all ages love when they have a say in what happens in the classroom. That’s where inquiry-based learning comes in. ... Inquiry-based learning is about asking questions. And a good way to get students to ask questions is to cover a topic that they’re interested in. Instead of standing at the front of the classroom and delivering information to the students, inquiry-based learning identifies a problem or topic and invites the students to work together to find an answer. Our latest blog explains the four steps we take to help inquiry-based learning along, as well as a look at how it plays out in the classroom. https://www.woodburyboston.wa.edu.au//inquiry-based-learni
07.01.2022 Spacewalk Art The Manta Rays (year 3-4s) recently completed their perspective Space Walk artwork. The children measured and drew lines, and coloured in shapes to create the perspective of a pathway. ... They added planets, stars and asteroids for a dramatic effect and to complete the depth of view.
05.01.2022 Our ethos makes us different Everything we do at Woodbury Boston is centred around the four branches of our ethos. For 40 years, we've been laser focused on the important things:... 04.01.2022 You might think that as a play and nature based school in the bush, we're anti-technology. That couldn't be further from the truth! We recognise the contribution that technology plays to so many aspects of our lives. Not only that, we want our students to know how to safely and usefully navigate the internet and all of the useful and interesting things that can be found there.... Our students learn the Western Australian curriculum, which focuses on digital systems, thinking and solutions. We encourage our students to engage with digital technology and look closely at how it interacts with individuals, groups, economies and environments. Sure, we love the outdoors, but you can be sure that your child will stay up to speed with digital technology throughout their primary years. Image @jennyfeastphotography

Our future is in good hands.
03.01.2022 Each fortnight, the staff and students of Woodbury Boston meet. Parliament is a student run meeting where everyone has the opportunity to show their appreciation for others, celebrate successes and discuss any concerns that they may have. PARTICIPATING IN PARLIAMENT TEACHES STUDENTS TO:... Understand their rights and the rights of others Recognise their responsibility to the community Share helpful insights that contribute to peaceful solutions Voice their opinions and be heard Listen to and respect the opinions of others Problem solve to find shared solutions to issues Want to know more about our innovative program? 01.01.2022 Have you ever heard of trail magic? It’s one of the things that got Byron (our year 3-4 teacher) through his 4260km hike from Mexico to Canada. Totally unplanned, volunteers turn up with food and supplies to help hikers that they don’t even know. Trail magic makes hikers feel less isolated and gives them a serious morale boost. These days, Byron practices trail magic in a different way. His lessons are tailored to cater to the needs of all his students, of course. They’re al...so exciting and they make students feel good. His class, the Manta Rays, have worked hard this year at lots of things, but especially Readers’ Theatre. Their public speaking has improved by leaps and bounds, increasing confidence and class participation.
