22.01.2022 The workshop remains busy with many other things happening besides building the 'Franklin 29' The Woodwork course is nearing completion, and the chairs are now taking shape. They have turned from beautiful pieces of celery top pine into beautiful works of art. The 1-year students and staff and some volunteers yesterday participated in a First Aid Course run by St Johns - we thank them for their time and patience. All survived including the dummies. One of our 1-Year students ...has decided to build his own dinghy for fishing on the river - so he can be seen working on it when he has some down time. The outside painting of the shed is coming along well now as we had a cherry picker last week to attend to all the high gable ends. This hopefully will all be finished within 2 weeks. So if your visiting this area come on in and take a guided tour. See more

15.01.2022 Over the last 2 previous weeks we have had a Oars & Paddle course which was run by Peter with 2 students making canoe paddles and using different kinds of craftsmanship. It was a five day course and they enjoyed themselves learning the craft as well as being regaled by Peter Laidlaw with his Scottish accent. Then last week we had a Skin on Frame Kayak course with 3 students who built their kayaks in 6 days and paddled on the river on the Saturday. This was run by Peter Ingram-Jones with all Tasmanian Students, one of which was a youngster with his dad. I has been great to hear the workshop buzzing with activity again and hearing the chatter and laughter.

12.01.2022 Our workshops buzzing with busyness and noise, with many projects happening. The 'Franklin 29' continues slowly edging forward towards completion. Adrian has had a big few days getting her ready for the first coat of the spray filler, then following up with fairing with torture boards. He even had Paul help put the tie coat on and on a small project inside the boat. The workshop was closed and all staff, students and volunteers were sent home prior to the spray beginning a...nd Adrian was masked, gowned and gloved. The next day we all got to see the beautiful lines of the 'Franklin 29' and what a sight she is. Monday saw the fairing begin with torture boards (aptly named), Adrian and Jimmy Max all sweaty and dusty, but Mike swept in later with the vacuum and cleaned it all up for them. The coming week will see a repeat of the spray filler and hopefully the last of the fairing. See more

09.01.2022 The Fine Woodworking Course commenced this week, and all the students are so far engrossed with getting up close and personal with Celery Top Pine. They began the course making a spoon to learn the techniques and all of them had their own unique way of crafting a stirrer. Graham (the teacher) has been often heard explaining some fine woodworking techniques to a student as well as using modern technology called Apple TV to visually show the students how to go about a process. ...Today is now Day 3 and they have gone from a stick of wood for a spoon, to using carving tools, to preparing a slab of wood for the chair base, to cutting the 3 parts and sharing them up, and then using a domino machine before laminating the chair base, with epoxy glue. All this has been done with the sun shining and reflections upon the Huon River, being able to be glanced from the shed when the big doors are open to the waterfront. Lunch is taken outside in the sun, watching the river flow lazily by. Graham is in awe of his work environment and has mentioned that he is in heaven - a yachtie and a woodworker at the Wooden Boat Centre, on a river of reflections. See more

03.01.2022 A great milestone was reached during the week of the 13th Nov. 'Jane de Cray' was launched into the water, after being worked on for 3 years by our volunteers. The person who was leading the refurbishment was Rob, and we must thank him for his tireless work and passion. She is stunning and now takes pride of place within our dinghy shed. She was donated to us by the Fricker Family many years ago, and we are fortunate to have her now as one of our working boats. Our thanks g...o to the family for allowing The WBC to be the new custodian. 'Jane de Cray' is 5.7mt long, with a beam of 2.2mt and a draft of 450mm. Rob and of late Nick, have done the Wooden Boat Centre proud with their attention to detail as well as restoring a wonderful part of our Tasmanian heritage of wooden boats. 'Jane de Cray' will now take pride of place as The Wooden Boat Centre's little working boat. See more

01.01.2022 We are slowly coming to the end of a very HUGE year. One of our Students from our 1-Year course has worked very hard over the last month to complete his training as he must return to his home state of Western Australia on Monday with his family. He will be greatly missed as the work he has created in timber of late, is something he should be very proud of. He has prepared the 'Duckboard' for the back of the 'Franklin 29' and it looks amazing against the Huon Pine Transom. Tha...nk you Chad for being great student this year, your humour and your passion have been enjoyed by us all very much. Travel safe to home with your family and we wish you well with your new employment next year. So we decided to have our Student Shipwright Dinner early so we could involve Chad & Beckie. This was held on Thursday @ 'Osteria' in Franklin and we thank Martino & Sofia for a great meal and for coping with our rowdy mob. See more
