25.01.2022 Dean and Al have been mucking around in the second bedroom...Merry Christmas everyone and a wet 2020 must be just around the corner.
22.01.2022 A big thank you to all the hundreds of people involved in fighting fires around Woodenbong - especially Greg Gulliver, Peter Taylor and the men on the dozers and graders led by Michael Smith. Lots of people from everywhere gave up their time to keep everyone here safe. It looks like the drama is coming to a close. The road to Kyogle may be opened tomorrow or Wednesday which will be great for Woodenbongians travelling to Kyogle and those people travelling through to southern Qld. The road to Beaudesert and Brisbane is still closed. Dean and I had a drive about today and Woodenbong isn't charred or looking burnt out so when the air clears hasten ye back as they say in Scotland.
22.01.2022 Just to let everyone know there are no fires burning in and around Woodenbong and Urbenville and no smoke to inhale either. We had 8-9mm a couple of nights ago which settled the dust. Looking forward to more rain in the coming months. While we are in drought we are open for business as are all the accommodation providers in the Upper Clarence. Please come and stay with us and support the local businesses.
20.01.2022 Some more photos of Ben Sullivan ploughing with Harold Thomas judging; Dean on the slide drive; etc.
19.01.2022 Dean just came back from a weekend at Surat and Yuleba for the reenactment of the last Cobb & Co run from Surat to Yuleba. A few months ago he was given several pack saddles by Mr Margaret Gallagher that belonged to her husband, John Gallagher, who was a pack horse drover. Dean counterlined the pack saddles and bags and cleaned and greased the gear and presented them back to the Surat and Wallumbilla Museums. Mrs Gallagher was there at the Drover's Presentation at the Sura...t Museum on the Friday afternoon. On Saturday people and horses gathered for the beginning of the 2 day drive from Surat to Yuleba. Dean and his mate, Allen Mealy, drove a sulky that was originally owned by John Gallgher and the horse is owned by Jim and Joyce Allbeck and is fondly known by myself as the "Wallumbilla Flash" - an ex pacer. Dean said he had plenty of energy and stamina on the Saturday but had slowed down by Sunday. The distance between the 2 towns is 70 odd kms. On the Saturday afternoon Dean did a display at the afternoon tea spot and at the markets in Yuleba on Sunday morning. Thanks to all who looked after Dean and Allen. They had a great time and looking forward to the next re-enactment in 5 years (the centennary) when they will be driving a team of 5 horses!!! See more
18.01.2022 The rain is welcome.
17.01.2022 Thank you to all those Booking.com guests who stayed with us this year and took time to complete a survey of their stay and congratulate us on our friendliness, cleanliness, fantastic views of the McPherson Ranges and great transformation of an 80 year old farm building into a contemporary rustic cottage. Difficult to beat 9.9 out of 10. This is the 4th year in a row we have won this award. We achieved a similar result from our Airbnb guests who gave us 4.9 out of 5. We love what we do and it shows when you receive public recognition like this. Many also mentioned Dean's Shed which I call a cornucopia of artistic endeavour and all things horsey. He is currently working on restoring 17 odd saddles which pretty much covers the history of the horse saddle in Australia for the last 100 years.
13.01.2022 Just to let our friends and past guests know that we are safe and the cottage, house and shed has not been threatened by fire even though we are situated in a high risk area. We have had a great view of the dramas unfolding across the McPherson Range. We are well prepared and thank our local friends who have come and spent the day with us when we were concerned for our safety and given up their time to fight a fire if necessary. Disappointed that the local Police and the SES have not visited once or kept us informed of what's happening. Luckily we have been able to listen into the two way radio. We're closed for a short time until we can access more water or it rains (hopefully the latter) and the roads re-open. This fire could be with us for some time.
11.01.2022 Enclosed some photos of the garden and some of Dean's saddlery work which is for sale. He has a couple of good stock saddles which he has counter lined. Give us a ring if you are looking for a good stock saddle or have one that needs repairing. Dean can do it all. The last photo is of a military saddle he has made (based on a 1915 military saddle) with original tree and buckles. Dean is working on the shoe pouch and a pair of wallets. Photos of some of his horse drawn ag...ricultural implements which miraculously appeared in the garden one morning after being moved in from the paddock where they have been languishing to some extent. The photos are of a Sunshine corn scuffler, International cultivator, single furrow plough and a cultivator. Some of the implements have been to Casino Beef Week, Jondaryan Woolshed and Mick Bradford's Day. Both of us have been busy and well during this time of isolation which isn't much of a change from what normally happens here in Woodenbong. Remember our cottage is separate from the house and can accommodate 2-3 people in splendid isolation. See more
06.01.2022 On the theme of Dean and Mick Bradford. Mick was a great supporter of the Woodenbong Show and the Draught Horse events that Dean organised. The events were sponsored for several years by our local butcher "Butch" who just loved to stand and watch. He said it reminded him of his early years in NZ. I remember the day they drove the log waggon and horses down the road from McPherson Street into the Showground. What a stopper!
04.01.2022 Dean has been working on making a new 24 inch collar for our horse, Ellie, and it is turning out really well. I like the brown leather he is using as opposed to what he has used in the past, veg tan. If you need an Aussie made horse collar for your heavy horse please contact us.
