25.01.2022 "EASTLYNNE" is a house we built primarily for ourselves. It follows the "new-old-house" formula. The front wing is made to look like an 1800's American Colonial 5-bay. The rear wing is made to look like a 1900's addition, with large picture windows to take advantage of the fabulous view. Upstairs the "old" wing has three bedrooms a bathroom and a large study. Downstairs is the master bedroom with spacious en-suite and walk in robe. The entry hall has genuine American red oak floorboards. Across the hall is the large formal living room with three french doors opening onto a wisteria covered deck and pergola. The "new" wing has a dining room (now used as a TV room!) kitchen and family room. Downstairs is an office, laundry and garage.

21.01.2022 When I was growing up in Sydney in the 60's "Cape Cod" was a very popular style, particularly as as an extension by adding rooms with dormer windows under the roof. So I was initially perplexed when we visited Cape Cod itself and could not find anything that resembled these! Here are some REAL (traditional) Cape Cod houses.

19.01.2022 Some photo's of classical architectural details from our 2009 study tour

18.01.2022 Pymble was the first house I designed and built. Naturally I started small - 5 bedroom three and a half bathroom, two and a half storey! One day Sue pointed out to me a picture in a magazine of a house liked. It had been built in the 1830's in Vermont USA. I said "I'll build it for you!" The front I carefully scaled off the original (with some Australianisation) but the internals I designed from scratch to suit modern life! I tried every possible permutation of room and stair... layouts to find the best, and was rewarded with an incredibly compact and efficient design. The site was a magnificent "battle-axe" block with a number of seventy year old oak trees, which gave seclusion, summer shade and a fitting backdrop for an American house.

17.01.2022 I have just found some photo's of the first American Colonial we built

12.01.2022 Andrea Palladio started the craze when his 1570 book containing his house designs based on the classical Greek and Roman forms became available in English. English architects then successfully adapted his models to develop a distinctivel style

11.01.2022 OK I have not been keeping up to date. lately it is because I have been busy with our latest project. We bought a beautiful block of land on the gorgeously oak tree lined High Street, opposite the state school and only a few hundred meters from the shopping centre. There is a listed Georgian style house being renovated 4 doorsdown, so we decided to build in a similar style, but using modern techniques and materials - Oh, and an interior layout suited to modern family living.... The design process took a few months, what with family team members thinking up new improvements all the time, and then the usual delays getting a building permit, but 5th May we did the site cut. Now I will be uploading progress photos so you can see it take shape.

06.01.2022 In the 1800's Australia was developing and the English Georgian forms were often used as a basis for both humble cottages and grand mansions. Survivung examples tend to be the more fire-proof brick and stone ones, but I grew up in an 1800's 3-bay single storey that my great grandfather had built as a country get-away (16Km as the crow flies from the centre of Sydney!) which was timber weatherboard. For protection against the sun these typically had veranahs. Unlike the American colonials Australian ones were generally hip roofed.

05.01.2022 We have done two trips to study study American houses on the East Coast, both Northern and Southern. The early settlers took with them the Georgian style from England, and further developed it. Here are a few of the many photo's we took.

04.01.2022 This came later than the simple colonial style. It is more formal and especially in public buildings can be very ornate. However simple domestic ones, provided they have the right proportions, can be very attractive. They are generally gable front to the street which is very useful on narrow blocks with mandatory setbacks which increase with building height.

03.01.2022 Finally the renderers are back on site! This is the first colour coat going on.
