18.01.2022 30 November 2018 Carers Victoria begins this edition by welcoming the re-election of the Andrews Labor Government on Saturday 24 November. The Andrews Labor Government has committed $49.5 million to increase respite care hours and support services for carers and $4 million in grants for both grass roots and state-wide carer support groups. This will result in a significant increase in practical support for Victoria's 736,600 carers. Carers Victoria advocated to all Members ...of Parliament and our #CarersCountToo Election Platform led a positive campaign to ensure the newly-elected Government would lead in respecting carers and provide support and services to meet their needs. We offer our sincere thanks and congratulations to all Carers Victoria members and carers who got involved in our election campaign. This edition highlights more positive recognition of carers in the media and some significant proposed changes by the Australian Government relating to carers. Be sure to check out many exciting events and opportunities in the 'Get Involved' section too. Happy reading. - The Carers Victoria Team http://www.carersvictoria.org.au/about-us

04.01.2022 Fridge Folders Help Carers - Information Folders for Fridge Display The early days after receiving a diagnosis of dementia are extremely stressful for carers. They have finally received confirmation that their loved one who is living with this insidious disease can now take advantage of the many resources available to help make their life and their carer’s life a little easier. Consequently, there begins a stream of health professionals who are all willing to help and advi...se. Unfortunately, this often becomes a nightmare of who is who, where they are from, and which one said they could help with which situation. Because so much is happening, it is often difficult to recall the name of the visitor so that other family members can be made aware, or to easily find that piece of paper with all the helpful telephone numbers. Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group (WLCG) is a volunteer group of people who have all gone or are still going through the difficulties, both emotional and physical, that are part of the stressful 24/7 role of caring for someone with dementia. As a result of talking with each other about the lifestyle they are now forced to lead, members developed the idea of a practical tool to assist in keeping track of all the help available. The information folder may be displayed on a fridge using the Velcro dots supplied or attached to another surface using blutak. It is a clear plastic folder with a wipe clean surface which has six business card sized pockets for visitors to use, thus enabling the carer to have instant access to telephone or email contact details. Opening on two sides, it is possible to insert information sheets for easy access. The original order of 100 folders and pockets was made possible by the generous support of Gisborne & District Community Bank’s branch of Bendigo Bank. Folders supplied directly to carers through WLCG include information on services available throughout the Macedon Ranges, together with the group’s calendar of meetings for the year. Carer Joyce Richards, a group member since 2012, has found the folder invaluable and wishes it had been available when she and her husband Glenn first received his diagnosis. Folders are available through the group by calling 5420 7132.
