18.01.2022 Tomorrow we commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day, the marking the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan (1966), where D Company 6 Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR) fought a fierce battle against North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops close to the village of Long Tan. In 1969, 6RAR veterans held a memorial service there and, over time, the date became synonymous with all those who served in Vietnam, until 1987 when Prime Minister Bob Hawke officially declared Long Tan Day as Vietnam Veterans Day. 16.01.2022 To some it's Wednesday; to others it's International Dog Day! We thank and remember all of our current and ex-serving canines for their bravery, sacrifices and service Image: Australian War Memorial, HOB/56/0711/MC, circa 1956... Description: Affection between man and his dog is clearly shown here, as dog handler 2/5733 Private (Pte) Keith McDonald, of South Yarra, Vic, and his dog Prince, a three year old black and tan Alsatian, get together after a patrol. A War Dog Section of eight dogs, trained for tracking and jungle patrolling, and their handlers are working with 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR). Operating in the notorious Sungei Siput area of Perak and probing deep into the jungle, the dogs, with their keen senses and their abilities to smell out an ambush have proved themselves to be invaluable with the patrolling soldiers. Pte McDonald also served in Korea with 2RAR fron 1953-1954.
15.01.2022 A message from Woodend RSL President, Ken Bryce: Victoria is going through a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. We believe it prudent for Poppies Bistro at Woodend RSL to take a two-week winter break at this time. ... This will encourage our volunteers, members, and patrons to stay home for a couple of weeks out of harm's way until we are confident that the COVID-19 cases are decreasing in Victoria. Woodend is just outside the Stage 3 Lockdown area, so we can open when we desire with the 20 patron limit and table service. We intend to open again on the 31st of July unless further restrictions are applied to our shire or the COVID-19 cases are still increasing across Victoria. Stay home. Stay safe. 11.01.2022 From the Minister for Veterans, Shaun Leane MP: Today, 14 November, marks the same date in 1944 when Sergeant Len Waters became the first Aboriginal Australian fighter pilot. We reflect on his service in a week when Remembrance Day coincided with NAIDOC Week. ... This week is a timely reminder that we cannot commemorate our country’s servicemen and women without acknowledging the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to our armed forces. This crossover of two very important events on Australia’s cultural calendar may be, for some, a somewhat complicated time as we commemorate the intersection of pride, celebration and mourning. Of sacrifice and violence, and persistence. Aboriginal people cared for Country for tens of thousands of years, and this continued with the involvement of thousands of Aboriginal people in Australia’s armed forces. We know that in the early 1900s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were not legally able to join the Army, so many hid their identity in order to sign up. It is estimated that close to 1100 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people served in WWI, while as many as 6000 served in WWII. These are Australians from whom we can draw wisdom and whose contributions must continue to be celebrated, as we remember all who have served. Sgt Waters, a Kamilaroi (Gamilaraay) man, was raised in the southwestern Queensland town of Nindigully. He volunteered for service in the RAAF on 24 August 1942, at Brisbane, and was accepted. He began training as an aircraft mechanic, but later volunteered for the flying service, and commenced initial training at Somers, Victoria, in December 1942. 05.01.2022 Today we commemorate Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War! Victory in the Pacific Day, or VP Day, commemorates the end of the Second World War on August 14, 1945, when Japan accepted the terms of the unconditional surrender set by the Allied Nations. Also known as VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, it is commemorated on August 15, the day that Australian Prime Minister Ben Chifley announced the end of the war in a radio broadcast, before the signing of... the official surrender took place on board the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan, on September 2, 1945. VP Day meant an end to Australia’s war against Japan in the Pacific; a war that had begun half a world away in Europe that was brought close to home after Japan’s unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941. We remember the sacrifices and service of our Diggers who fought for our freedom in the Pacific. Image: Australian War Memorial, 112844, Melbourne, Victoria 15 August 1945. 03.01.2022 A reflection on Vietnam Veterans’ Day from Woodend RSL President, Ken Bryce: Today the 18th August, we recognise the Battle of Long Tan, now known as Vietnam Veterans Day. We are still in lockdown. There is nothing glorious about war, except in the minds of children playing. The quiet of lockdown has given me time to remember. Sure, we Vietnam Veterans, have constant reminders of our time in that foreign country. I think vividly about all those guys I served with, those who ...did not come home alive, those who have joined their ranks since, those whom we have lost contact with, and those with whom I am still in contact. I was an Infantryman, so there were many members of our Battalion that we mingled with, before, during and after. We were, in fact, like the ANZAC Battalion, had roughly 40% of our unit who were Kiwis. I have been going through some of the many items, I cherish as mementos of that time. These items are only special to me, and not to others who did not face the challenge. Just today, I came across a letter from a school friend who actually served with the American Air Force and was in Vietnam at the same time as I was. Sitting at home with no opportunity to remember those dark days with like-minded people on our day is indeed sad. Part of the ceremony is the sounding of the Last Post, where we lower our heads in respect and remembrance of those who are not with us. Then we have a moment’s silence and Roust is sounded. This tune is when we raise our heads to welcome a new day and new challenges.
