20.01.2022 We are all aware of the fire that broke out on Woppis Road yesterday morning. It spread very quickly on the worst day for some time for such a thing to happen. ...Last night a lot of effort was made to backburn along the town firebreak which is some distance into the national park to the west of Woodgate. The aim was to protect the town from the front that had crossed the Woodgate Road and was heading towards Buxton but which could spread towards Woodgate if there was a savere wind change. The burn was very successful though there was a lot of colour and smoke on our western horizon. As quickly occurred yesterday, today many Brigades from our neighbouring towns, and further, along with National Parks crews and urban brigades, were deployed. Today they have worked mainly to the west where the fire threatened Kinkuna Estate and the Heidkes Road area. There were extensive aerial water bombingresources that put on an amazing display over us on the fire front as well as over town. The two Woodgate trucks spent the day patrolling the town break to make sure that there were no spotovers that would breach the break and threaten the town. Tonight that patrolling is continuing with fresher crews in our two trucks. We will be out there tomorrow and until the fire is completely out. There are so many people and resources combining to support and protect our town. We will try to publish a full list once things are less hectic. In the meantime take care out there!

07.01.2022 The History of Woodgate Woodgate was first named Ascot by Charles West the proprietor of a coach service between Bundaberg and Maryborough. Woodgate was a coastal watering place for the residents of Childers, the surrounding Isis Shire and Bundaberg.... Allotments about 300 metres back from the beach were roughly subdivided, providing flexible access for buggies through sandy soils and with space for animals to graze. There was a short lived school until 1922 for half a dozen children and an angling club was formed in 1936. Swimming enclosures were built and in 1939 joint action between the shire and Bundaberg led to the formation of the Woodgate Surf Life Saving Club. Most of the landscape was flat to undulating wallum and in 1948 the Woodgate Sate Forest was reserved and harvested until 1970. It was gazetted as a National Park in 1974. Comprising 5500 hectares which adjoins the town and extends to the Burrum River inlet. Woodgate changed from a casual holiday spot to a town in the 1970s. In rapid progression the original bowls club was built (1973) and a community hall transferred from Isis Central Mall (1974). Water had been obtained from wells and securing a central reticulated system proved difficult. Development was vigorous during 2000s. Shoreline apartments were a step-up from previous standards. Town sewage was installed in 2005 and the Isis Shire brought in a foreshore management plan. Fast Forward to 2011, the census data showed us that half of the total number of houses are not the primary dwelling with the intention being for holiday and weekend use. Woodgate has a large community centre (replacing the hall burnt down in 1991), a hotel-motel, a tourist park and other holiday accommodation, local shops, a bowling club and a progress association. Many houses are for holiday and weekend use. At the 2011 census the median age of Woodgate residents was 61, compared with 37 for Australia.
