22.01.2022 This is absolutely fascinating and reinforces what many of us have been saying for years. Planned burns kills off these effective natural fuel reducers and humus makers. "Their digs improve soil health, increase soil moisture and nutrient content, and decrease soil compaction and erosion. Digs also provide habitat for invertebrates and improve seed germination. What’s more, by digging fuel loads (dry, flammable vegetation, such as leaves) into the soil, they can help bring down the risk of fire." (Courtesy SPIFFA)

19.01.2022 As the city’s population grows, the surrounding urban fringe is under increasing pressure of inappropriate development which is why we are stepping in now to pr...otect these environmental values for the long-term. We want your feedback to safeguard these important areas and help us plan for the long-term use of this land which provides many conservation, agriculture, heritage, tourism and recreation opportunities.

07.01.2022 Did you know Australian Magpies are said to be able to remember a face for years. You can actually make friends with your local magpies and they'll never swoop ...you! You can also tell if a magpie is a male or female by the colour of its back, female magpies have a much more grey back whereas males have a vibrant white back. Magpies love to forage for insects and worms so supplying them with lot of flowering species like Brachyscombe multifida is sure to help them out with finding food. #australianmagpie #wildlife #wildlifephotgraphy #nature #loveyourhabitat #habitatgarden #createhabitat #gardenforwildlife #sustainablegardening #wildlifegarden #plantindigenous #indigenousgardening #mornpenflora #shop #shoplocal #onlineshop #supportlocalbusiness #morningtonpeninsula #morningtonpeninsulamade #onlineshopping #onlinestore #mornington #morningtonpeninsulabeauty #bird #birds #birdlife #birdlifeaustralia #birdphotography #birdphotographyaustralia #abcmyphoto See more

03.01.2022 Ever wondered what type of indigenous habitat existed in your neighbourhood before it was cleared? Well here’s how to find out! This great interactive map fro...m DELWP Can help you get started with your indigenous garden by identifying your pre-colonial EVC! What is an EVC you ask? EVC stands for Ecological Vegetation Class, this describes a particular type mapped habitat driven my geological factors, climate and vegetation indicators i.e. the type of plants that occur within the EVC. For example Coast Banksia Woodland Is obviously a type habitat full of Banksia’s near the coast, Or Cool Temperate Rain Forrest, Heathy Woodland or Grassy Woodland as you can see; all the names are quite descriptive. Select the; Pre 1750 EVC layer on the map Then search your suburb and roughly where your house is located, then tap or click and your EVC will be revealed! Once you know what your EVC is, now all you have to do is google your EVC to find a list of what type of plants occur in your EVC on DELWP’s site and Spiffa has some good EVC info on their page too. Let the journey begin! If you like; share what your EVC to get some banter going on this. Here’s the link https://www.environment.vic.gov.au/biodiversity/naturekit See more
01.01.2022 This insignificant looking post is one of many which have been placed along the road where I live. We'd had many kangaroos and other wildlife killed after bein...g hit by cars. These posts are activated by car headlights shining on them and emit a loud buzzing sound thereby deterring wildlife from crossing the road. Several of us in the neighbourhood contacted Sunshine Coast Council re the problem and they listened and acted. Very impressed so far with no dead wildlife since they went in 2 months ago. Thank you Sunshine Coast Council See more
