24.01.2022 To extend current interests in our classroom, Rachael set up a ’letter treasure hunt’. Conor sat down at the activity and instantly began digging around the sand to find his first letter. Look Rachael! said Conor What have you found Conor? Said educator Rachael. A letter said Conor. What letter have you found ? Conor pointed to the letter chart and began to search for the corresponding letter. Rachael Rachael said Conor. Did you find the matching letter Conor? Said Rachael. Yes! The letter A said Conor with a big smile on his face. Conor then continued on with this activity for quiet sometime. During this experience Conor showed Confidence, determination, happiness and satisfaction.

20.01.2022 The children at Woodlands eagerly asked if they could paint our rock area with our homemade washable paint. Lyra, Jack and Daniel worked together to share their colours and to paint a rainbow! Look all the colours! Daniel said. I’m using all the purple Eli said as he poured the paint over the rock. Some of the children used different painting techniques such as spotting, stripes, creating pictures and using a splatter motion. The children are enthusiastic participants in their experiences and learn to work collaboratively.

18.01.2022 The children in the Balluk 3 Year Old Kindergarten Program at Woodlands have been learning about the Aboriginal flag including what the different parts of the flag mean. Today black, red and yellow paint were put out so the children could create pieces of art using these colours. Some of the children created a flag using their memory on what they had learnt previously. Others used the colours to inspire their own unique creations.... The children had small conversations about what they were they were doing and what colour paint they were using, we have been enjoying extending our knowledge about Australian history and cultural traditions.

13.01.2022 This week at Woodlands, we are so happy to see everyone retuning. The children and educators have been so excited to be reunited! Today, the children in the Kindergarten program gathered on the mat with the Kindergarten Teacher, Crystal, to discuss what we have been doing during our ‘stay at home time’. This helps us to continue to plan for the children’s current interests, new ideas and knowledge. The children who have continued attending Woodlands shared what they have been... doing on their weekends. We made a circle to be able to see everyone while we enjoyed our interactive group time. The children shared all the different adventures they had. I learnt how to ride a bike without my training wheels! Mitchell shared with the biggest smile on his face. I’ve been doing puzzles! Jack shared. I’ve been looking after my baby sister. Olive shared. We are glad the children enjoyed the time off, but we are so excited to be back together ready to learn and play!

13.01.2022 Exposure to music, sounds and musical instruments is a big part of the Woodlands program especially with our youngest learners!

12.01.2022 Recently the children at Woodlands Kindergarten have been interested in numeracy. Today, the children were excited to see a new experience set up. The children were asked to match the numbers. We can put them in order! Eleanor explained, she was able to show her mathematical understanding of order. Kai and Mitchell worked together to match the numbers. We realised if we counted the dots we would be able to match it to the correct number! The children took turns and were v...ery proud that they matched all the numbers! The children demonstrated a good understanding of mathematical concepts such as order. The children were able to transfer their numeracy learning to the activity

11.01.2022 Today, Ava from Bambino room at Woodlands, picked up the blue sensory bottle and held it up. She looked at it with curiosity. Ava placed her hands on the lid and began trying to twist it open. When this didn't work, Ava tipped the bottle upside down then guided it to the floor. "Ava, are you trying to make the water spill out I said. Ava looked to me and smiled with a happy squeal. Ava is transferring her knowledge, as she mimics the way that she knows how to empty bottles and pour water.

09.01.2022 At Woodlands, we collect all sorts of things instead of throwing them out and being wasteful. Today, we used our old paper towel rolls to extend on the children's current interest in shapes!

09.01.2022 The children in the Bambino program at Woodlands enjoyed creating their own pastings and colourful art. We were inspired to use bright colours to help us celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

08.01.2022 The young children at Woodlands love bubbles! Bubbles have an enormous amount of developmental benefits for young children. One of these being, the development of visual skills including, the skills to fix, follow, track, focus, converge and diverge.

04.01.2022 Lyra enjoyed a numeracy experience at Kindergarten. Lyra had cardboard circles with numbers and dots on them. She counted the dots and added the corresponding number of pegs around the edge. Lyra showed great concentration as she added each peg to the cardboard circle, counting them as she added a new one. This is experience is supporting Lyra to build knowledge and vocabulary relating to numeracy concepts and processes.

03.01.2022 Last week, we posted about the children's keen interest in colours, and colour mixing. This week, our educators have planned a number of experiences that support the children with their interest and allow them to continue investigating and experimenting. Today, we did this with primary colours in water. The children were asked what colour they would like to make, and, what colours they will need to add to their clear water. Luci wanted to make purple, she identified that sh...e needed red and blue to make it. Albert wanted to make the colour of his shirt, which was blue. We added blue dye to the water and made blue, he made a second one too, which was green. The other children around the table shared their ideas and knowledge, saying that, yellow and blue together will make green. Joseph, Harvey and Brenton decided to add all the primary colours together, using different ratios to one and other. This made lots of different colours. We had a conversation asking the children to think about why all the colours were so different? William said, Steph it’s because they added different amounts of each primary colours. The children were enthusiastic participants in this activity and are showing their ability to explore and explain reasoning while enjoying the investigation!

03.01.2022 The Woodlands children are given opportunities for responsibility to care for the vegetables and herbs in our our garden which are then used by our chef in our meals.

02.01.2022 This week, the children in the Woodlands Kindergarten program have been taking on the responsibility of looking after our new pet stick insect. Today, Miss Crystal needed some help to change the leaves in the enclosure. The children eagerly volunteered to help. Our friend is very good at camouflaging into the leaves, so today, when we took the leaves out to add fresh ones, we were able to get a closer look! The children helped spray the leaves and carefully place them back ...into the enclosure. Having our stick insect allows the kindergarten children to take on responsibility and look after a living creature. The children spend time during the day looking at him, ensuring that no one taps on the glass so he isn’t frightened, and that we keep his leaves fresh!
