25.01.2022 Year 12 student Liam Delaney said, "There’s rarely a morning in my household where someone hasn’t misplaced their wallet or keys. I hear the words I can't find my keys/wallet each day without fail. This is why, from the beginning of my year 12, 2020 industrial technology Major Work journey, I knew that I needed to design and craft a hall table with storage. To create a unique, art deco-esque feel to my project, I adopted a variety of different furniture making skills. I att...empted to make the legs of my hall table a stand-out feature by copy routing the correct shape from solid timber and including shaped knuckle joints for a smoother, more polished look. My cabinet carcase was created by using stack segmented solid timber blocks to create barrel-like side components. The curved ends were connected to a spline to form the carcase and sliding dovetails will be used to connect the dividers to the cabinet. For the drawers, I incorporated drawer runners to allow for a soft shutting features, preventing potential loud ‘slams’ my family may make when using the cabinet. I also made an irregular 'silo' shape with my drawers on the front of the cabinet to continue the sleek, yet captivating look of my cabinet. I also used finger joints to put the drawers together. Also, I implemented the use of the laser cut acrylic pattern to match the laser etched drawer knobs at the back of the empty cavity to make it look aesthetically pleasing to the eye." 18.01.2022 Loft Chair - "One of my pieces for Differing Perspectives currently on show with Craft ACT. Following the skyline of the buildings and the way that these different forms can interact together when interpreted as a flat image. The side panels are a direct reference to the image, the texture referencing the light-play on the incomprehensibly tall buildings. Loft is a look at the scale of us in an urban environment. 12.01.2022 Entered in the Art & accessories category, Leo Primus's Bated Breath is 1:1 scale, in-the-round carving of an American kestrel. "The kestrel is carved in mahogany with the gauntlet carved in northern silky oak, both salvaged from a skip bin on a demolition site. Negative space is achieved with separation between the wing primaries and tail feathers with deep lines in the upper wing and head capturing accentuating the prominent features for which raptors are renowned. The stan...d is made from laminated off-cuts of Tasmanian blackwood also salvaged from a construction site. The carving is oil finished and 0000 steel wool used to temper the gloss levels providing contrast in the finish." . See all the entries at www.woodreview.com.au/moty . 05.01.2022 Entered in the Student category, Finn Hawkins' Retro Sideboard "has refined and sleek dimensions to ensure there is functionality. The line of the sideboard is straight along the top and the bottom, however on the sides there are routed carcase corners. The rounded corners are in contrast with the curved legs, highlighting the flow of curved shapes throughout the project. I chose Tasmanian blackwood as it is a beautiful Australian hardwood that can be finished to a beautiful ...smooth polished surface." . See all the entries at www.woodreview.com.au/moty . 04.01.2022 On polishing screws, and that divisive issue for woodworkers, whether to clock them! "Anyone else buff their screws?? Here I’m polishing slotted screws to replace the Phillips ones that came with the hinges. The new screw heads come rather dull and rough with machining marks and they just don’t look good on small scale pieces. I start by filing them flat then sanding the heads then polishing on a couple wheels. What I love about the outcome is that the screw heads end up bein...g a little domed or mushroomed as well as shiny from the polishing wheel. Very important is to get a tight fitting screwdriver so the slot doesn’t get bruised when tightening the screws down. This screwdriver is custom ground for a perfect fit. As for timing or clocking screws, it’s not for everyone and I only do it on small objects where ever detail is in your face. If I can’t get the screw to locate I remove it and try a different on. Listen for the creaky, crunchy sounds as the screws hit 3 o’clock and careful don’t snap one!! Looks like I put two unpolished screws in by mistake, I’ll have to swap them out before this ships off which won’t be anytime soon as all nonessential outings are prohibited here." 03.01.2022 Entered in the Student category, Riley Talmage's Contemporary Entertainment Unit was built to update and replace an existing entertainment unit in his home. "During the idea generation process, I was influenced by a YouTube video that included a hexagonal wine rack that immediately caught my attention. The rack used walnut and maple elements that gave the piece a gorgeous contrast that I also wanted to emulate within my own piece. The hardest process was creating 60 degree do...vetail drawers which required a precision and patience to get right however the final result was 100% worth it." Riley used Tasmanian oak, jarrah and camphor laurel. Riley attends Tyndale Christian School and his teacher is Edgar Luke. . See all the entries at www.woodreview.com.au/moty .
