21.01.2022 Imagine only brushing your teeth once or twice a year when you visit the dentist? Gross, right? Well for most pets, that fuzzy furry feeling you get when you dont brush your teeth, is permanent! And we as pet owners can change that! How you ask? Brushing your pets teeth can be a very quick, easy and enjoyable activity for the both of you! But like any aspect of pet care, it takes time and dedication! Our furry family members are worth it!... Step 1: Selecting a toothbrush and toothpaste. Dog and cat toothbrushes are available at veterinary clinics or pet stores; however any child or toddler soft toothbrush would be suitable! Now for toothpaste! Human toothpaste should never be used on our pets, these toothpastes are designed for humans only and contain harmful ingredients that could make our furry friends quite sick if ingested. Pet toothpastes are specifically designed to suit animals, they contain added meaty flavours to entice our pets and are 100% safe to ingest if and when our playful pets decide to eat it! Step 2: Introducing them to the whole process. Find a quiet area, sit down with them and get your pets used to you working in their mouth, touching and lifting their lips, touching the gums, teeth etc. Initial sessions should be brief, and well rewarded with plenty of treats and praise! Step 3: Once your pet is comfortable with you working in their mouth, introduce a soft cloth or gauze swab on your finger, and gently brush their front teeth in a circular motion. If your pet is tolerating this brushing, then try to introduce a small amount of toothpaste on the cloth. This will get your pet used to the taste of the toothpaste! Step 4: Now to introduce the toothbrush. Dipping the brush in tuna juice or chicken stock can engage your pets interest with the brush. When your pet is comfortable with the brush, gently stroke a few front teeth with the brush and slowly increase the amount of teeth brushed per session. Step 5: Now to start brushing with the paste! Hold your pets gums back with one hand and gently brush the teeth at a 45 degree angle to the gums. Paying attention to the canines, brushing in between the teeth and at the back of the teeth is recommended. Speak to our friendly staff today about our range of oral hygiene products!

17.01.2022 Just a friendly reminder to all our clients that Woodridge Vet Surgery will be closed this Friday 26th for Australia Day! From all the team here at Woodridge Vet, we wish everyone a very happy and safe Australia Day. Remember if you are firing up the BBQ, make sure your pets cant reach it, even after its extinguished. The lure of tasty smelling food can be a temptation for our pets and could lead to a serious burn. Also keep an eye on them at the table and ensure they aren...t getting any fatty sausages or off cuts as these food items can lead to pancreatitis. If you have any concerns with your pets health on friday, please contact AES Underwood on 07 3423 1888.

16.01.2022 With the increase in rainfall in recent months, comes an increase in mosquito numbers, which in turn increases the risk of heart worm transmission between pets. HEARTWORM, hmm what is that? How is it transmitted? How do you prevent it? Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasitic worm that develops and grows in an animals heart and lungs. Adult heartworms can be up to 30cm long and cause very serious disease to a patient and/ or possible death depending on the severity of ...the infestation. Both cats and dogs can be affected! Heartworm is transmitted through mosquitoes, an infected dog with adult heartworm will have microfilaria (early stage of the life cycle) in their bloodstream and once when are biten, the mosquito will ingest that microfilaria. The microfilaria will develop into larvae within the mosquito, then that mosquito will bite a healthy animal and inject the larvae stage of heartworm under their skin. If your pets are not on current and regular prevention of heartworm, this larvae will develop into adult heartworm over the course of 5-6 months. Prevention of heartworm is crucial and is one of the many important aspects of pet ownership. There are many products on the market that will cover and protect your pets against developing heartworm. Our recommendations here at Woodridge Vet Surgery are as follows: Puppies and Kittens - need to be wormed fortnightly until 12 weeks of age, then monthly thereafter. We recommend Milbemax tablets for both. Or nexgard spectra from 8 weeks for puppies as it covers them for fleas and ticks also. Dogs - Proheart injection which we recommended getting by 6 months of age. This injection is annually so will protect them against heartworm for a full year. This first injection as a pup will take them through to when they are first due for their yearly needles, so we can organize to get them all done at the one appointment. Other options for heartworm prevention in dogs, is worming tablets Milbemax, or using Nexgard Spectra. REMEMBER if you are using tablets for heartworm prevention they need to be administered monthly! Cats - Milbemax worming tablet monthly! Or Advocate spot on monthly! We realize its a lot to remember as a pet owner so to make everyones lives a little easier, we will email you out reminders of when your pets are due. If your pets heartworm prevention has lapsed for 6 months or longer, we will need to perform a quick in house blood test to confirm your pet has not developed heartworm within that time. For further information or clarification on heartworm prevention, please contact our friendly staff on 07 3209 4242 and we can discuss your pets individual needs and help you determine the best preventative plan for your pet!
