24.01.2022 HEALTH ALERT Rotavirus Over the last week there has been an increase in cases of rotavirus mostly in Central Australia. Precautions such as thorough handwash...ing with soap and water, particularly after handling sick children, changing of nappies, going to the toilet and before and after preparing and eating food is important. Those with diarrhoea should not prepare or handle food that will be eaten by others, attend childcare/school and not swim, wade or paddle in public pools for 24 hours after the diarrhoea has ceased. To reduce the chance of them developing rotavirus infection, infants should receive their rotavirus vaccines on time, which is given in two doses, at 6 weeks and at 4 months of age. It is treatable with antibiotics but the infection can progress very quickly.
