24.01.2022 Found this old photo of me crawling around on the roof of the @burnsideorganicfarm shed. #timberframe #shed #mortiseandtenon #carpentry #spottedgum #margaretriver #sustainablebuilding #handcrafted

22.01.2022 This is known as a wedged dovetail joint and it’s used here to connect a tie beam between two posts. The weight of the roof is trying to push the two posts apart, putting the tie beam in tension. Whenever a joint is in tension it needs to be really strong to resist those forces and this joint is designed so that all that load is not concentrated on just the peg. Once the wedge is driven in the top, the dovetail tenon is locked down against its mortise making it impossible for it to come apart. The old time carpenters that designed these joints had such an extensive knowledge of timber and how it performs in different situations. Probably the reason why there are examples of timber frames still in use today that were built in 1637!

21.01.2022 Was great to go back to @surfmargaret today and put the finishing touches on their orchard with some beautiful spotted gum gates. #margaretriver #carpentry #spottedgum #timberframe #barndoor #rustic #permaculture #timber

21.01.2022 Haven’t posted for a while! Been spending the last little while upgrading my equipment and wanted to share this amazing machine that I’m now the proud owner of. The woodmizer lt40 is fully hydraulic and it’s already saving me so much work compared to the old manual mill! #sawmill #woodmizer #timber #carpentry #margaretriver

20.01.2022 Milling some banksia timber today, not sure of the particular species as the client salvaged it from a burn pile, but sure has some beautiful grain patterns. #sawmill #australiantimber #margaretriver #woodsmithsmargaretriver

20.01.2022 Wall bents are test fitted and now onto scarf joints for the top plates #foresttoframe #woodsmithsmargaretriver #timberframe #traditionalwoodworking #woodworking #handmade #handtools#postandbeam

17.01.2022 Began selecting trees in the plantation today for an upcoming timber frame build. I like to spray numbers on the trunk which coincide with a list of timbers I expect the tree will yield, that way I know what I’m trying to cut when I get the log on the sawmill #localtimber, #timberframe, #forestry, #farmtotablebutforbuildings, #woodsmithsmargaretriver

15.01.2022 Working on an entrance/pergola for a netted orchard structure. Bit of a head scratcher dealing with waney edge braces and posts that will fix to the ground at different heights. #carpentry #liveedgewood #waneyedge #timberframe #margaretriver #orchard

14.01.2022 Draw boring the peg holes will pull this scarf nice and the tight #scarfjoint #timberframe #handmade #foresttoframe #woodsmithsmargaretriver

14.01.2022 After listening to the wail of the chainsaw, the shriek of the wood chipper and the howl of the sawmill for the last few weeks it sure is nice to just be listening to the gentle scrape of the chisel #traditionalwoodworking #woodsmithsmargaretriver #timberframe #foresttoframe

11.01.2022 I’ve been meaning to build a proper firewood shed for ages. I finally found some time to do it and I’m pretty happy with it. There’s something about nicely split and stacked firewood. #timberframe #firewood #woodshed #carpentry #shed #margaretriver

11.01.2022 And this is the other little upgrade #unimog

10.01.2022 When felling small trees that will be cut for firewood, I always make sure I drop them conveniently into the fork of another small tree so that it remains at perfect working height and keeps my chainsaw out of the dirt. Always. #woodsmithsmargaretriver #chainsawskills #directionalfalling #totallyonpurpose #coppice #forestry

10.01.2022 Bit of Saturday fun.

09.01.2022 Here it is! Our traditional timber frame. We are so happy and grateful to have been given the opportunity to complete this project for @burnsideorganicfarm and promote a better way of using local timber to provide beautiful, long-lasting structures. Thanks to everyone involved in our vision up to this point, and a special thanks to @afgswan and @fair_harvest_permaculture for your continued support. This lovely spotted gum started life in the Fair Harvest plantation that we manage just 2km from Burnside. Doesn’t get much more local than that!

09.01.2022 Double ender workout. These huge jarrah slabs required the full power of our double ended chainsaw mill. It took patience, some serious sharpening, and a lot of focus to get the end result. These are going to make some incredible tables.

08.01.2022 From Forest to Frame. Raising has begun. There is nothing quite like finally driving those pegs home. More pics to come. #foresttoframe #timberframe #postandbeam #traditionaljoinery #woodworking

07.01.2022 It’s been a pretty relaxed start to the year. That changed yesterday. #milling #slabs #slab #woodworking #chainsaw #hardwork #margaretriver

07.01.2022 Working on a little coffee table. Still plenty of work to do finishing the top (and the whole thing), but the basic joinery is complete, and it’s looking pretty nice. Tuart slab from a storm damaged tree, recycled jarrah from an old pergola. #woodsmithsmargaretriver #woodworking #joinery #slab #table #handcut #handtools

06.01.2022 Always nice to snug in a brace. #timberframe #postandbeam #woodworking #handtools #mortiseandtenon #margaretriver

05.01.2022 Just nailed up this waney edge cladding on the side of a little timber drying shed I built for the sawmill. Such a cool way of using otherwise low value parts of a log #sawmill #rustic #weatherboards #cladding #waneyedge #woodsmithsmargaretriver

05.01.2022 Swipe left this belt of Karri trees blew down on a nearby farm. so I headed out with the woodmizer and milled some nice boards. How crazy is that huge root system? #karri #sawmill #woodmizer #salvagedwood #treeroots #timber #margaretriver #margaretriverregion

03.01.2022 One of the last trees to be harvested for the traditional timber frame shed we are building for Burnside Organic Farm. This tree was at maximum size for our mill and will provide us with nearly all the timber for the roof structure of the shed, plus a few cubic meters of firewood, mulch and biochar material. Nothing is wasted! Its truly a pleasure to work with such beautiful hardwood sourced locally from the plantation at Fair Harvest Permaculture. As you can see on the backside of the mill, there is a nice stack of milled timber ready to be framed up. Pictures of joinery and raising coming soon!

03.01.2022 All that remains after the hewing of six jarrah beams. I wasn't prepared for my own sentiment when the new custodian came to take them home.

02.01.2022 Breaking out the old @granberginternational Alaskan mill. This was the other half of the big marri I split in a previous post. #chainsawmill #stihl #ms880 #alaskanmill #marri #slabs #timber

01.01.2022 We decided to make a ritual of felling the first tree for each timber frame we build with an axe. Because axes.
