21.01.2022 WARNING, RANT POST: Where’s the danger in pet food, really? For decades we’ve endured mycotoxin recalls that kill thousands of pets: this time it’s 70+ de...ad dogs from feeding toxic corn . We don’t see manufacturers writing articles about the dangers of feeding mycotoxin-filled grain-based pet foods that have been definitively linked to kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease and cancer in many species of animals. The FDA has a zero-tolerance policy for salmonella in commercial raw pet foods, where’s the zero tolerance policy for toxic mycotoxin levels in dry pet foods? Why aren’t kibble manufacturers that use grains in their products required to test every batch for these poisons to keep pets safe? See more

11.01.2022 FB friends, we got the biopsy report back and with great sorrow I must share this....Our darling girl died from the toxin in this plant that I have on my deck. ... It is called heliotrope and is highly toxic, causes total liver destruction. The pathologist said our angel had the worst liver damage he's ever seen. Goldie would nibble at the leaves of this plant every so often and we had no clue it was toxic. (It can come in white or purple.) Please share with any dog owners you know to hopefully prevent their dog from becoming a statistic like Goldie. We are even more heartbroken now knowing her death was preventable. Please share her story so that something positive may come of it and create awareness of toxic plants. Our own vet had no idea this was a toxic plant!! See more

09.01.2022 The Animal Poisons Helpline is often contacted regarding pets that have chewed on or swallowed the flowers, leaves, or stem of the frangipani. The frangipani (...Plumeria genus) is a common attractive flowering plant found in gardens throughout Australia. The milky sap is irritating and chewing on or swallowing parts of the plant can result in gastrointestinal upset which may include irritation of the mouth, drooling, decreased appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea. The iridoid and terpenoid toxins are particularly concentrated in the stem bark and therefore pets that have chewed on or swallowed the stem are more likely to develop symptoms than those that have chewed on or swallowed leaf or flower material. In most cases, symptoms will resolve soon after wiping out the mouth with a damp cloth and giving a small drink of water or lactose-free milk. Pets that have ingested an unusually large amount of plant material or those with persistent vomiting or diarrhoea should be assessed by a veterinarian. The Animal Poisons Helpline is free to all pet owners in Australia and New Zealand. If you are concerned your pet may have been exposed to a poison, phone 1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ) for advice, even if your pet looks well. For pet poison updates direct to your email box, sign up to our mailing list at animalpoisons.com.au/stay-up-to-date
