16.01.2022 This is why we love what we do. We all know how relaxing a good swim can be. It allows more oxygen to flow to the muscles and forces you to regulate your breathing. #Swimming is also a great way to reduce #stress. Swimming underwater is like being in another world. The water distorts the sky above, casting the suns reflection into an almost ethereal pattern on the bottom of the pool. Its no wonder swimming can put you into an ideal mental space.... How does the #brain react while swimming? Swimming is a #meditative exercise. Your brain function improves via a process known as hippocampal neurogenesis, where your brain replaces lost cells resulting from stress. When you hit the water, your mood is lifted immediately from the coolness of the water, leaving you free from tiredness and depression. A study by Dr. Howard Carter of University of Western Australia, School of Sport Science shows how the brain reacts during swimming. The team of scientists, led by Carter, hypothesized that water immersion to the level of the right atrium in the heart would increase the delivery of blood within the brain. The right atrium is located on the upper right hand side of the heart and is one of four hollow chambers of the heart. The right atrium receives blood from two large veins: the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava. The job of both of these veins is to return blood that has provided oxygen to various sites in the body; the returning blood, then, is low in oxygen. The coronary sinus, which is a smaller vein in the wall of the heart, also drains blood into the right atrium. The study concluded that brain blood flow is higher when subjects were immersed in water up to the level of the heart compared to on land, laying the ground work for further investigation of its effects on cerebrovascular health. Moreover, swimming can improve your mental well-being. It can help you to shut out external stimuli: Once you immerse yourself into the water, outside sounds are cut off. The only thing you feel is the water against your skin. You focus on your breathing, the bottom of the pool, and the ease of the water. Things are simplified when youre swimming. Its a form of moving mediation. Its a great form of low impact exercise: Gliding through the water gets your heart pumping. Its also great for your muscles and lungs, as well as having low impact on your joints. When you take care of your body, your emotional well-being is greatly improved. Swimming a few times a week is a great way to exercise and improve your mood. It releases endorphins: A good swim workout releases these natural feel good compounds. It can also convert excess fight-or-flight stress hormones into muscle relaxation. New brain cell growth is promoted as a result of releasing the stress. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24553298/ https://www.lifehack.org//how-swimming-changes-your-brain- https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com//swimmings-effect-o/

16.01.2022 A PB is not just a PB for a swimmer. Its a PB for a coach too! We are blessed to have amazing coaches at Woogaroo SC who really do the hard yards for the children. They are there in the wee hours of the morning - rain, freezing temperatures or shine. They are there into the dark of the night, and they are there ALL weekend at a swimming competition! Thank you to our amazing coaches, because without your guidance, wisdom, firm approach and encouragement, our children wouldn...t be achieving the results they are. Across the weekend, there were personal bests achieved of astronomical proportions! There were swims that qualified for States. There was tears and laughter, disappointment and elation ... and all the while, our superstar coaches were there to experience all of the same emotions. From our swimmers to our coaches, THANK YOU for being there for us. We need you and appreciate you!

05.01.2022 Club swimmers/parents - Swimming Qld has confirmed the recommencement of swim meets and provided following dates:- 1. 29 August 2020 Speedo Qld SC Preparation Meet... 2. 25 September 2020 McDonalds SC Championships 3. 10 October 2020 Long Course Preparation Meet #1 4. 17 October 2020 McDonalds Qld OWS Championships 5. 14 November 2020 Long Course Preparation Meet #2 6. 12 December 2020 McDonalds Qld Championships The committee has decided that, in light of the short preparation after return after Covid-19 restrictions, it will be up to individual swimmers as to whether they will enter the short course meets, as per the directions of their coaches. The club will not be rostering any coaches to attend the short course meets (although some coaches may attend of their own accord). Therefore, in the event that you enter, you need to do so under the assumption there will be no coach support. Please note that if you are planning on entering your child for any of the upcoming meets, there will be some wide ranging changes due to Covid-19 restrictions. Swimming Queensland are not settled on the extent of the restrictions/changes although we do know the following:- 1. Self-marshalling will be mandatory that means no parents will be allowed onto pool deck (unless they are rostered to time keep); 2. Only one parent allowed to attend the meet with their child (this will mean no grandparents or siblings will be able to attend to spectate); 3. There will be seating zones with maximum numbers per zone we are unsure what the number limit is for each zone it may mean that parents are required to sit in a separate zone to their children if this is a requirement the swimmers will be supervised by team managers the number of team managers will be limited and will depend on the size of the team attending from the club. The Woogaroo Committee will make the determination on the Team Managers on a meet by meet basi. If you are not comfortable with the possibility of your child sitting in a separate zone from you (and being supervised by a team manager(s) as nominated by the club), you should not enter your child in any of the upcoming short course meets. Also, if you are not comfortable or confident that your child will be able to self-marshal, then please do not enter your child in any of the upcoming short course meets. Self-marshalling will involve your child going down to the pool deck when their event is marshalled, finding their lane and marking their name off on the lane sheet, and then standing in line to ensure they are on the blocks for their heat. We reiterate, no parents will be allowed on pool deck to assist with this process. Any queries, please contact Jeremy Bruce or Sharon Carvolth via private message through TeamApp. Regards Jeremy Bruce President Woogaroo Swimming Club https://woogaroo.swimming.org.au/
