17.01.2022 Leaky Gut Syndrome (Intestinal Permeability) The intestine, small and large is a semi-permeable membrane. The epithelial cells lining the gastrointestinal trac...t (GIT) have a very tight junction between them, which determine what substances cross over into the blood. It decides what the body requires, and is known as absorption. The problem comes when the epithelial cells and villi within the intestines become damaged and severely compromised, opening up too wide, allowing unwanted, undigested food and other toxic particles through. This causes our body to respond immediately, creating discomfort, a bloated feeling and inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, known as Leaky Gut Syndrome (LGS). The digestive system is a system which needs to operate as a system. Food enters the stomach and is broken down with stomach acids, which are composed of hydrochloric acid, potassium chloride, and sodium chloride, with the enzyme pepsin being the main one. This stomach liquid when broken down is known as Chyme, the Chyme is acidic, around a pH of 1.2 to 3 and is released into the duodenum, the beginning of the small intestine, where it is mixed with bile salts from the liver. Bile is needed to emulsify the fats in the chyme and activate Lipase from the pancreas. Bile pH needs to be somewhere between 7.5 to 8.6 pH. The pancreas secretes bicarbonate and pancreatic enzymes, which help lift the pH to around 7.2 to 8.2 pH. The enzymes produced by the pancreas are Trypsin, Chymotrypsin which aid in the digestion of proteins. Amylase assists in the digestion of carbohydrates and lipase to help digest fats. These enzymatic functions now work together on further digestion of food, aiding in the absorption of nutrients. The combination of bile, pancreatic bicarbonates and enzymes, together with the Chyme, move down into the small intestine where our friendly bacteria continue to work on the breakdown and assimilation of food, aiding digestion and absorption. As you can see this is a system, an inner ecosystem. The health of the beneficial bacteria, depend on the quality of the Chyme secretions, ensuring all is in balance. However, if the Chyme is poor quality, and the wrong foods have been ingested continuously, the change in the Chyme will be more than likely to occur, which will change the ecosystem of the friendly bacteria, also known as the microbiome. If the ecosystem is not healthy it will lead to a change in the integrity of the epithelial cells lining the villi within the intestines, causing the microbiome to be severely compromised. We call this Leaky Gut Syndrome which has been known to be responsible for illness, acute and chronic conditions. There are a variety of well documented disease related effects such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn's Disease (CD), and Ulcerative Colitis (UC), collectively called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Advanced breakdown of the microbiome contributes to immune mediated conditions, characterised by chronic inflammation of the (GIT) leading to conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RH) and Systemic Lupus. What is the best way to assess ones health? To assess the quality and eco system of the microbiome. If the quality is compromised, Leaky Gut Syndrome can occur as a result. Naturopaths were the first to discuss gut permeability, and are therefore the most qualified practitioners to address (LGS). Whipped Cinnamon Coconut Cream Take the refrigerated can of coconut milk out of the fridge and flip the can over. Open the can and pour the water into a bowl or container, the cream and water should be separated. Scoop the cream into the bowl of a mixer and add in the maple syrup and cinnamon. Beat the cream on high speed with the whisk attachment for several minutes or until stiff peaks form. Pipe the whipped cream on top of the pumpkin pie bites or serve alongside them. See more
