22.01.2022 The tragic inspiration for 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize Finalist Toni Morrison's work 'Fire Within' was a local bushfire, The St. Ivan bushfire, in 2016 at Dunedoo/Coolah/Cassilis NSW. The black wooden beads signify the charcoaled vegetation, crops and the many homes left behind. The raffia signifies the sparse patches of vegetation that the fire miraculously didn't burn. The shape of the opening signifies the shape of the flames and the opening itself signifies the ...tragic and devastating holes left in the lives of our local community affected by this terrible event of nature. 18.01.2022 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize Finalist Louiseann King is a maker of poetic imagined spatial and cerebral experiences. Over 20 years her artistic practice has explored themes pertaining to the environment, metamorphosis, beauty, artifice, memory, loss, the hierarchy of making processes, gender and materiality. King employs and transforms the found and discarded within nature and culture and, utilizing textiles, glass, sound and bronze casting, generates chimerical rever...ies traversing time and place. King lives in regional Victoria, Australia where she is inspired by the marked physicality and malleability of the natural world that surrounds her home/studio and the way nature exists in relation to the constructed world 'tear' is an imagined, shifting world constructed from the mercurial materials of bronze and glass, reflecting and projecting a shifting framework of Australian time. Australian flora and fauna are depicted in the minimalist grids of filet crochet bronze works alongside Australian flora which is both cast in bronze and pressed to create a two dimensional landscape. The natural world is inferred along with the artificial, generating questions pertaining to gender, value, replication, loss and power. 16.01.2022 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize Finalist Carol Lehrer Crawford says of her work "Ava is an expression of my inner being . She was created as a stream of consciousness and is feminine in nature. What you see is the result of a conversation that I had with the raw stone, in this case statuario Carrara marble. I do not use maquettes or predetermine the outcome of any of my stone sculptures, they evolve naturally. Ava was totally hand carved in a very slow process of hand ch...iselling, filing and hand polishing in early 2019." 14.01.2022 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize Finalist Lisa Giles' 'Untitled' is inspired by The Handmaids Tale costume designer Ane Crabtree who brought Gileads dystopian dress to life. Crabtree admitted that her creative process was emotionally charged when the filming schedule aligned with the results of the 2016 presidential election. Every day the script seemed to be mirroring what was happening in the States, says Crabtree. I did an inverted female vagina in the design of the... Aunts collars. If you look subtly, youll see that. Its sort of my way of saying, F you.' I have to design this in a way to oppress women, but I wanted to free them mentally, through design. 13.01.2022 'Traces' by 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize Finalist @oliver_ashworthmartin has been formed by setting seed pods of Eucalyptus into concrete and then burning the material away. 12.01.2022 Winner of the 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize Special Commendation Award, Benjamin Jay Shand's 'Array 3' is an exercise in rotated extrusion and optical illusion. "Array 3 seeks to couple the ground plane with the space above, appearing as if caught in the motion of upward propulsion. Drawing its palette from mechanical industry and shapes from traditional instrumentation, the work plays with repeated crystalline elements that are lightly suspended via an elevated grid..., effectively lifting its primary volume with shaped apertures allowing for intersections to serve as connections. Combined with refractive material properties and a diagram that utilises perspective to reshape opacities, the work presents a static, reduced geometric elevation from afar before revealing finer interplays on inspection to provide comment on the inherent dynamism of form. LAST DAY OF FREE Exhibition of Finalists! 10.01.2022 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize Finalist Ara Dolations' sculptural forms are peculiar spherical objects with a planetary feel; they appear transitory, on the verge of collapse or reform. 09.01.2022 The Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize, presented by Woollahra Council, today announced Sydney based artist Merran Esson and her work Autumn On The Monaro as the winner of the 19th annual acquisitive $20,000 Prize. Sydney artist Benjamin Jay Shand was awarded the Special Commendation award valued at $2,000 and artists Kieta Jackson, from Norwich, England, and Jessica Leitmanis, from Torquay, received a special mention. The 2019 Mayors Award valued at $1,000 has been awarded to ...Adelaide artist Jane Price. The winners were chosen from a finalist group of 43 emerging and established artists by three guest judges: Dean of the Faculty of Art & Design and UNSW Chair of Arts and Culture, Professor Ross Harley; Chief Executive Officer, Sydney Opera House, Louise Herron AM, and Design and Architecture advocate, broadcaster, author and comedian, Tim Ross. Professor Ross Harley commented on the 2019 winning sculpture: Merran Esson has made a beautiful work that evokes the forms and atmosphere of the Monaro autumn. The winning work displays a masterful use of material, palette and form but at the same time it has a warmth of emotion which draws the viewer into its field. Louise Herron said: Each piece of the winning work is superbly crafted with unique detail. The work as a whole is made even more beautiful by that diversity, much like nature itself. All finalist works will be displayed as part of a free public exhibition from 12 October 3 November 2019 at Woollahra Council in Sydney. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #wssp19 @woollahrasmallsculptureprize @wentworth_courier @catalinarosebay @dleannelewis @aussiehomeloans @lizzietakesatrip @intersectionpaddington @crawfordscasting @wentworth_courier @catalinarosebay @artalmanac @_articulatepr @thegoldenmeanagency #artprize #woollahrasmallsculptureprize #contemporaryart #sculpture #smallsculpture

08.01.2022 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize Finalist Julie Monro-Allison's 'Nook' is an exercise in defining a small, interior and hidden space, enveloped and protected by its surroundings. Light filters through the translucent washi paper into this interior space, but it is difficult to see inside. You will need to find an edge, a moment where movement between the exterior and interior is possible. You will need to move your eyes closer: you may need to move your body closer. 05.01.2022 Sustainability is a key theme for several works in 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize. Finalist NOT @8NOT8/ has created glass sculptures of the yellow-breasted bunting (Emberiza aureola). While the number of birds arranged in this vintage food container may connote good fortune eight being the luckiest number in Chinese numerology nothing could be further from the truth for this migratory Eurasian songbird considered by many to be sacred, and currently facing extinction... due to illegal netting in China, where it is prized and eaten for its aphrodisiacal qualities. image: Song Dynasty (clouds) close-up Free exhibition of finalists continues until 3 November --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #wssp19 @woollahrasmallsculptureprize @wentworth_courier @catalinarosebay @dleannelewis @aussiehomeloans @lizzietakesatrip @intersectionpaddington @crawfordscasting @wentworth_courier @catalinarosebay @artalmanac @_articulatepr @thegoldenmeanagency #artprize #woollahrasmallsculptureprize #contemporaryart #sculpture #smallsculpture #Emberizaaureola @8not8/

04.01.2022 2019 Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize Finalist Jane McKenzie's art practice is an exploration into sculptural forms influenced by architecture. Jane says 'there is an exciting cross-fertilization between what I can physically create with clay and my architectural background. Just as clay likes to curve to form traditional vessels, that tendency to curve has been exploited to form arches and barrel vaults, while openings cut into the clay like windows impact the manipulation ...of light across surfaces. As you walk around each of the four facades of 'Circumvent', new compositions and perspectives are revealed to produce an intriguing whole.'
