20.01.2022 The face of of a repentant chocolate thief! Poor (stormin’) Norman stole and ate unattended dark chocolate with peppermint this morning but his vet student mum and family got him to us quick enough to make him vomit before the chocolate was absorbed. Chocolate toxicity causes gut upset and neurological signs such as tremors, incoordination and seizures. Norman is already prone to seizures so doesn’t need any additional triggers. 16.01.2022 Leptospirosis update A new case of leptospirosis has been confirmed overnight by the Sydney University working group, this time in a Paddington dog who died from kidney failure earlier this week. This is the 4th case reported this month, the first case from Paddington, and the first case who was vaccinated against leptospirosis. Testing for the specific serovar is continuing and well update again when it is confirmed whether the strain is the copenhageni strain that is in ...the currently available vaccine, and which is the strain identified in both the Newtown and Balmain dogs who were diagnosed earlier this month. The recommendation for vaccination is now a 5 km radius from Paddington, which extends to the beach suburbs that were previously out of the hot zone. Small blood vessels in the ear can be easily damaged with allergic ear shaking, infection or self trauma. We drained Billie’s hematoma under sedation today and she needs her snood like dressing for the next 24 hrs to minimise the risk of it reforming. 02.01.2022 Leptospirosis update A 3rd new fatal case of canine leptospirosis this month has been reported by @northshoreveterinary the first on the lower north shore, in the Crows Nest/Artarmon area, more evidence that this rat borne pathogen is becoming endemic in Sydney. Leptospirosis in dogs initially causes non specific signs such as lethargy, elevated body temperature, vomiting and diarrhoea, progressing to liver and kidney failure. Dogs become infected by contacting rat urine in... contaminated water or soil, or by direct rat hunting contact. Cases in Sydney have had comparatively poorer outcomes to those in North America and Europe. Vaccination is the best protection available along with supervised exercise to minimise contact with stagnant or communal water sources. If your dog was not vaccinated last year when inner Sydney cases were diagnosed, please consider doing so now, as cases are no longer confined to a defined inner city area. .
