22.01.2022 I am proud to announce that Victoria has finally committed to introduce a legislated spent convictions scheme! Victoria is the only state which doesn’t have this legislation.... Woor-Dungin co-ordinated the Aboriginal Criminal Record Discrimination Project campaign under Michael (Mookeye) Bell and Christa Momot’s leadership along with Simone Spencer, Wenzel Carter and myself working and supporting our communities including Elders Uncle Larry Walsh & Uncle Jack Charles to name a few. This campaign involved consulting with many of Aboriginal organizations across Victoria and was heavily supported by Stan Winford and Bronwyn Naylor from RMIT. I have been involved right from the start way back in 2016, where I shared my story of criminal record discrimination to be used as a case study, then went on to work on the project. This legislation will enable mob with a criminal record to get a second chance and achieve self determination. Michael (Mookeye) Bell, Christa Momot, Stan Winford, Bronwyn Naylor and I now work on the Rethinking Criminal Record Checks Project. This is a partnership between Woor-Dungin and RMIT. We are launching this project on Thursday 2 April. Please get in touch with us if you want to get involved. Regards Naomi Murphy.

20.01.2022 In an echo of the Sports Rorts Affair, it has been revealed that the former federal minister for Aboriginal Affairs had not always followed his department’s advice of which aboriginal organisations to fund. Some funding has even gone to organisations outside the formal application and grants processes. Full article below https://www.theguardian.com//we-werent-worthy-aboriginal-e

11.01.2022 Dear Woor-Dungin friends, We at Woor-Dungin would like to take this time to thank everyone for their on going commitment to the current Covid restrictions in place across Victoria. As we prepare to move further into restrictions being lifted across the state we urge everyone to remain safe, continue social distancing, wear a mask and follow the restrictions which are set out below. The curfew lift in metropolitan Melbourne from 5am on Monday 28 September.... There will be higher on-the-spot fines for breaching rules about visitors to your home and outdoor gatherings. The 4 reasons that you can leave home remain, however some changes have been made to restrictions: o shopping for food or other essential items o exercise and outdoor social activity with members of your household or up to 5 people (including you, and from a maximum of 2 households) as long as you do not travel more than 5km. This must be in a public outdoor space, and does not apply to people’s backyards or outdoor spaces connected to a home o permitted work, and for the purposes of education. That includes taking children to school, childcare or outside school hours care service in which they are enrolled o caregiving, for compassionate reasons or to seek medical treatment For secondary students, remote and flexible learning continues in the Second Step when term 4 resumes, except for Years 11 and 12. In Term 4, from 12 October, there will be a phased return for onsite learning for Prep to Grade 6, VCE (Years 11 and 12 or those doing VCE or VCAL subjects) and special schools. Religious gatherings can also take place outdoors with 5 people plus a faith leader. You can only travel up to 5km from your home to attend a gathering and only for 2 hours. Private inspections for residential real estate can also resume with one client (dependants and a partner may also attend) and is limited to 15 minutes. Residents who are living in the home must not be there. The 5km rule does not apply when inspecting a house for rent or purchase. You can only leave your home for a maximum of 2 hours to attend the inspection and you cannot travel into regional Victoria. See more

06.01.2022 A recent study has concluded that the media has shown a systemic bias against solutions and perspectives around self-determination offered by aboriginal people and their organisations. Some of the positions adopted by media involve suggestions that it is not the right time (too early), it is too late to change things, or that this is the wrong way to go about it. This biased media reporting makes it hard for aboriginal people to get their views taken seriously in the wider community.
